New to OK - how's this army list?
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 08:34:03 PM »
Hi all,

I'm new to playing warhammer.  I've been painting the minis for a good while and have finally decided to step into the battle as well.  I've been thinking about going with this for a 2,000 point army, and I'd really appreciate some feedback.

This is an all-purpose army - I'll swap out fun units for particular matchups - but this is just to have some fun with!

1 unit of 5 bulls with ironfists + bellower
+1 butcher with dispel scroll and bangstick

1 unit of 5 bulls with ironfists + bellower
+1 butcher with 2 dispel scrolls

1 unit of 7 ironguts + bellower + standard bearer
+1 bruiser (army general) + heavy armour, tenderiser, fist of laurels

1 unit of 11 gnobblar trappers +1 brave

1 unit of 2 leadbelchers

1 unit of 2 leadbelchers

1 unit of 2 maneaters + cathayan swords + heavy armour

1 unit of 2 rhinox riders (1 thunderlord), +bellower, + heavy armour, +ironfists

total points: 1,999

how's this look?
:gnoblar: x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

8th edition: 105/25/12
New ogres: 36/6/5

Hi,

One thing you may want to consider is finding the points and upgrading your bruiser to a Tyrant, the extra leadership really does help.

sounds like a sane idea - but where could I find the 70+ points?

I guess I could scrap 1 of the maneaters - but I hate the thought of leaving myself at 1981 points spent - any ideas where the rest could go?

any suggestions welcome! :)

Well, if you do that, try and configure the army a bit to include a gorger. Best tactical unit we have :)

they are 75

Harlequin is right, upgrade to tyrant. Get rid of maneaters and field gorgers. Champion on rhinox ??  Is he worth the extra 20 pts ?

thanks for the advice

If I scrub the maneaters for a gorger, would I be leaving my flanks a little exposed?

I was putting in the mannies as a flank-defense unit.

I'll reconfigure my list and repost later

thanks so far - keep 'em coming!

I don't think you need to worry about your flanks much.  With the rhinox riders on one side, that's pretty set.  Drop the maneaters and replace them with a gorger an upgrade that tyrant.  That leaves you with 35 points to spend.

The bull unit's ironfists are not worth it without light armor.  If you drop the ironfists from one bull unit(+25pts.), drop the Thunderlord(+20 points), and make the trappers mininmum size(+22pts), that gives you a total of 103pts.  Losing the heavy armor on the tyrant makes it 109pts.(Cmon, what difference does a 5+ save make if you're fighting characters?).  With those points, you could get a 3-strong bull unit, or a couple units of gnoblars and add light armor to the ironfist bull unit, or add another rhinox rider...

The point is for decreasing overhead to maxmise effectiveness.  20pts isn't worth it for a str.4 attack, ironfists are only good w. light armor, and I'm not sure what the trappers are for, but you don't need eleven of them.

The core of the list looks pretty hard.  Just a few necessary cuts were needed.

As far as ironguts go, you may want to run 1 unit of 3+tyrant and a second unit of 4 independently.  A second rank of ironguts is horribly expensive, and splitting it into 2 gives you many more tactical options.

As others have said, Tyrant is almost a 'must have' for combat, but mostly for his Ld.

Units of 5 (6 with charcater) are somewhat in-between.  Too big for MSU units, and not big enough for hammers.

Either go for units of 3/4, or units of 7/8 for the extra rank out-number.

Personally I never run ogres in units bigger than 3, but then I'm an MSU fan!

lots of excellent advice there from everyone.

I was a bit worried about the panic effects of kills on MSU (lose 1 and that's it) - hence the slightly bigger size.

I'll run through the figures again and post the modified list soon.

the thought of that third rider is making me drool!

thanks everyone for you help to this newbie so far :)

Much beter, but i should replace one scroll for a skull malte. Two scrolls is enough when you're fielding 2 lv2 wizards.

UPDATE!!!

I got the points wrong in my list (never trust another man's spreadsheet!)

I've had to do some re-working with the units and I've taken into account some of the other advice I've been given so far - here's the new (and correct) breakdown of my first-ever army - any advice you can give would be invaluable! :)

1 unit of 3 bulls + ironfists
joined by a butcher with dispel scroll and bangstick

1 unit of 3 bulls + ironfists
joined by a butcher with dispel scroll and skullmantle

1 unit of 3 bulls + ironfists

1 unit of 7 ironguts + bellower + standard bearer
joined by a tyrant (army general) + fist of laurels + tenderiser

1 unit of 8 gnobblar trappers

1 unit of 2 leadbelchers + bellower

1 unit of 2 leadbelchers + bellower

1 gorger

1 unit of 2 rhinox riders + bull rhinox

total cost: 1,999 points

how's it looking?

In the 3 man units of bulls I'd drop the ironfists...it's just alot of pts to sink into units that you might want to use as bait, and besides that you just don't have a reason to use the IF as shields without the light armor IMO.  I'd also drop the bellower on the IG unit.  With the tyrant in that unit you'd be insane to flee from a charge (just too risky) and the # of times you're going to go to a tie breaker with a unit decked out like that, are pretty slim.  Just changing IF to exta hand weapons, and losing the bellower in the IG squad would give you 20 pts that you could spend on a magic banner, armor for tyrant, wyrdstone necklace for tyrant, little gnoblars for tyrant, etc.  You may even think of droping the weapon upgrade completely from the 3 bulls that have no hero since they aren't going to be that powerful.  Other than those minor things, I'd say it's a pretty good list!

thanks for the input - I think I'll make some of those changes now

I'll drop the bellower from the IG unit
I'll drop the weapon upgrade from the unit of bulls without the butcher and that'll give me 26 points

For that, I think I'll have.....

wyrdstone necklace + luck gnobblar for the tyrant

that's back to 1,999 points

how's it now?
