Making an all out scout/vanguard list
« on: Aug 01, 2012, 12:02:02 AM »
Helloes

The idea might be a bit wacky to work and I'm sure other has thought of it before, which is why I'm asking!

Have any of you had any luck with an army build up with mulitiply units with vanguard to get up and close, harassing your opponent and forcing their hand very early on? As it's very low on deployments I take it your opponent will deploy as if the Ogre player is getting first turn and if it's possible without taking hard hits, you give your opponent the first turn, getting that sweet turn 1 charge with your vanguards  8)

I've made a list which focus on hunters in "big enough" sabretusk units, having both vanguard and swiftstride is pretty cool. Also made it with a Tyrant instead of Slaughtermaster, that's mostly for fun, I'm sure it's possible to drop it for a Slaughtermaster (then you could also drop the Firebelly, he is there mostly for magic defence)

Tyrant 267
-armour of silver steel
-great weapon

Hunter 165
-longstrider
-gold sigil sword

Hunter 180
-enchanted shield
-dragonhelm
-gamblers armour
-sword of striking

Firebelly 180
-level 2
-scroll

7 Sabretusks 147
7 Sabretusks 147
1 Sabretusk 21

4 Maneaters 310
-brace of pistols
-vanguard/swiftstride

4 Maneaters 310
-brace of pistols
-scout/poison

7 Ironguts 351
-FC, look out, discipline

7 Ironguts 316
-banner

Hope I get the chance to proxy test it.

I think it looks interesting, and I'd love to hear how it works (I'd have to use cardboard to proxy it myself).  Some potential changes:

Strip the pistols off the maneaters.  If you're going to vanguard/scouting, then you're probably not going to be shooting.  Your goal is to be in combat ASAP.  As it stands, you have 96 points tied up in pistols.  I say stick AHW on them for extra punching power.  Also, stick the DHB on the scouting maneaters.  Since they can't charge if you go first, you can march up next to something and hit them with the flamer template from the DHB, causing wounds and sticking them with ASL if they try to charge one of your vanguarded units.

Drop the Tyrant and take a SM.  This will give you some dispelling capability, and let you move the dispel scroll onto him (you'll see why in a moment).  Plus the spells will offer some nice support.

Put the Firebelly on a Flying Carpet.  This will turn him into another, near-immediate threat your opponent will have to deal with.  Between his breath attack, fireball, and one other spell, he'll be a potent nuisance.

I'd also combine the IG units, and pare them down to the 600 point minimun for your core.

I threw together a similar list awhile ago, off the top of my head it had something like

Tyrant

2x Hunter

Ironguts with banner of swiftness
2x3 bulls

2x10 Sabretusks
9 Vanguard/swiftstride maneaters
3 Scout/ITP maneaters

I figure lack of magical defense will be mitigated by the fact that with four respectably scary combat units in combat by turn two at the latest, one way or the other the game would be over in three turns.
