Belchfist's Warriors of Chaos
« on: Jul 05, 2012, 06:49:23 PM »
Hey!

So it's been nearly two years since I last assembled and painted a miniature. This was due to many reasons; university, moving home and losing all my gaming stuff, not knowing anyone who took part in the hobby near me  and many other life commitments. However I have now begun to make the small steps back towards full participation in the hobby. During my time out I always kept up with the hobby and the new army books etc. but never bought anything new.

For those of you who didn't follow my blogs over two years ago (probably most of you nowadays) I ran a near 5,000 point Ogre Kingdoms army, 2k of daemons and around 3.5k of warriors of chaos. I dabbled all over the range as painting and converting single miniatures was what inspires me most.

This brings me to an important point - the entire painting range has changed! This not only made choosing which paint colours I required quite complex but will also require me to learn to use the new layering system they have brout in. Exciting!

SO

I decided to head back to my Warriors of Chaos army due to them being slightly more forgiving painting-wise than daemons and much less complete than my ogres. I decided to delve straight in with two single miniatures rather than units as that waif they stood out (due to experimenting with the paints etc) it wouldn't be too big a deal! I was essentially starting from the beginning with what modelling equipment I had and since yesterday I know of a few extras that I definitely need to pick up in the next few weeks!

So on my return trip to GW I bought:

Chaos Nurgle Lord (bloated fat one)
Khorne Lord on foot

Black Primer Spray
Craft knife
Thin Super Glue
Small Drybrush
Small layer brush
Small fine detail brush
Selection of 12 paints

I plan to add a unit of warriors to both of these polite gentlemen just so that they don't get lonely. My primary Chaos God was always Slaanesh so I'm trying something different until I can get hold of my other stuff from home.

My first impression of Finecast is great by the way - loving the extra detail/hate the extra work it requires...has made me realise that clippers, file and green stuff need to be purchased on my next trip!

The washes...incredibly interesting...will enjoy testing them!

Ok, here's some wip of the Nurgle Lord on foot. Long way to go but should give you an idea of where I'm headed!

It's a WiP and I will get better pics when it's finished. I have subsequently added much more highlights/layers to the sores/cuts and changed up the skin etc and the armour...

Anyway enough excuses! It's an indication of things to come...

Here's a little update ...most of the model has been added to since you last saw it, but still haven't had a chance to get to a store to pick up paints for browns/bone! So they remain black at the moment.

Here it is:

On another note I will be using the 'Rocky' bases for my character models that I will buy from Scibor miniatures - I have had great dealings with them in the past and the quality is unsurpassed. Here're the bases:

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=642

For my units however a cheaper version will be required to save money. For this. Have decided to try out a little company called back2base-ix online and have opted for their 'Slate' bases. They are very similar minus a few skull details here and there compared to the Scibor selection but I hope that will subtlely make the characters stand out in a not too obvious fashion whilst saving money on the bases for my units. Here are the slate bases:

He will remain unbased until they arrive!

I am a fan of the back2base-ix bases. They do a nice job.

Looking forward to seeing more!

Update!

So I went to GW to pick up the final paints I needed for lord of Nurgle... And ended up buying THIS:

Also, wasn't happy with either head for the Khorne Lord so chopped a bit off to get the result I wanted. Any ideas what this part could be used for?

Here is the Khorne Lord assembled and primed:

And my nearly finished Lord of Nurgle is ready to be shown to the world! Bases still haven't arrived and the lighting and photography make it look terrible. All bone will receive further stages:

Comments appreciated as always :)

I have now fully integrated my life with photobucket, including my iPhone so this blog is goin to be filled with pics of my progress I hope!
Any iPhone users out there - it won't let me take the image code from photobucket iPhone so I still have to do it on a pc/iPad for now...any way around this? Thanks

Despite the absence of replies I'm hoping people re enjoying following my progress anyhow. I will keep my promise of making the gnoblog pic heavy, at every stage of modelling!

Here is the Sorceror Lord of Tzeentch assembled:

Due to my plan to place my models on separate bases I am buying from elsewhere, I had to cut the toes of the Sorceror Lord (that were made as part of the base - ridiculous) and attempt to stick them to the feet of the model! Fiddly business!

Here is the Lord of Khorne having had one coat of red and a red wash to darken it:

It is my first attempt ever at painting block red so I'm intrigued to see where I can take it.

So my current plan of action for the army is to assemble and paint:

Lord of Khorne on foot
Lord of Nurgle on foot
Sorceror Lord of Tzentch on foot

Then add a unit of 12 warriors for each of these gentlemen so that I can field them appropriately. I literally couldn't care less about how effective they are in the field I just want them to be fluffy, playable and look good.

If I don't have time to paint 12 warriors when these three are done, I may buy a Lord on mount and test my skills on that bad boy!

So Lord of Khorne is coming along nicely! About halfway to being done. I'm finding myself going with the distinctive fantasy style that GW seems to have developed since I last picked up a brush - that crisp almost cartoony fantasy. This mean defined dark edges between colours etc. I like it at the moment but I'm still getting used to the paints so let's see!

I'm finding red to be quite forgiving to paint with so my first unit of warriors may actually be of the Khornate variety despite that going against my Slaaneshi roots! We will see...

Here is an updated pic of the Lord of Khorne as things stand. The skulls are a bit messy but have proven a bit diddly so I will have to spend some time fixing them later. He is about halfway to being done...so a long way to go!

Good stuff! The skin on the Nurgle Lord looks a little too clean for my taste (aside from the oozing yellow sections of course), but other than that everything looks great! Especially like the armor effect on him, and I'm frankly amazed at how much better the Khorne Lord looks without his headdress.

Thanks or the comments Noisy Assassin.

I am used to Slaanesh warriors so the 'disgustingness' of the flesh may well be slightly underdone you're right. Jut a note; the yellow is actually glaze and slightly more transparent in real life which makes it look like oozing pus. But still...I agree with you!

And yes Lord of Khorne without a silly hat - YAY!

Main question to you all:

What should I use as a Lord of Slaanesh figure? I dot want a generic Lord to represent him/her. I don't mind alternative model systems if they're appropriate - or is Sigvald the Magnificent worth looking at?

Hmm, well I'm rather partial to the generic Slaanesh Lord on foot. I like it better than the Sigvald model. Other than that, I know I've seen some really cool models for Slaaneshi Lords, but can't remember where... One option if you don't mind ramping up the mutating influence of Chaos would be to use the snake-bodied Dark Eldar thing (called a Slytth apparently) as a base model, then add an appropriate head and arms. Here is a random picture of it from a different forum:

Could also maybe use this model from Freebooter Miniatures

Both of these would look a little more Daemon than mortal though...

Who returns?  :P

I like the succubus for a slaanesh lord.
There are other manufacturers though, look at Battlefield-berlin, maelstrom or other maybe even coolminiornot.
I wanted to start a warriors of chaos all female army, and actually never got beyond lords as the models are or expensive or "your mama" jokes became the truth

Haha thanks Lexy! Good to be back hobbying again!

Thank you both for your suggestions. Have looked at all the options that have come up so far and nothing has grabbed my imagination yet. Will keep it churning!

In the meantime however I once again entered my local GW today and look what I bought:

So I've finally got an army list I can work towards. I also bought my first box of Chaos Warriors to start adding some rank and file to my 3 characters!

Built, prepped, primed and begun painting on 4 of them. They will have the mark of Nurgle and currently look like this:

I am hoping to freehand paint a design/artwork on each individual shield which I have shaved down to be flat:

Any ideas from you guys about what would look cool on these? Thought it was a great idea but didn't actually have the idea if that makes sense! So I you coul help out that would e great.

Last but not least here is a (terrible) pic of my Sorceror Lord of Tzeentch in his current state (just started!)

That's enough for one day!!

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Thanks for your comments gentlemen. I'm quite happy with this shield. Has taken about 45 minutes in total (from the already Caliban Green base.

I'm trying to get my freehand better but I need lots of ideas for the shields as I intend to have each of them be individual! It's great to be back at the stronghold!

Again a design inspired by artwork in the rule book plus my imagination. It is entirely freehand and not finished yet! It will have a lighter highlight on the bone and e tidied up a little when I get the chance!

LOVE the shields.
The idea, the painting, great.

Normally I would say: great job overall, but you're good enough to take some extra critique.
The highlights on the boots annoy me.
I don't know if it's the glare of the picture or the colour difference.
The strange thing is that it doesn't bother me on the belt.

I appreciate critique as much as compliments!

I actually agree with you. It's missing a middle colour brown, and that's due to me having not picked one up when starting off again with the hobby a week and a bit ago. It was bothering me in the background but you have spurred me on to fix it!!! Will be buying a few more paints today and the right shade of brown will be one of them to fix the boots, some files an some saying varnish I think to protect these bad boys from battle damage!

I have an idea for the fourth shield now, but am busy with real life thing this evening so won't get round to it until tomorrow but it's coming soon, don't fret! :)

So here I what I bought on my last trip to GW:

and since then my wonderful resin bases from back-2-basix have arrived and have allowed me to complete my first four Warriors of Nurgle! Here they are in all their foetid glory (with fixed boot highlights for Lexy ;) ). Note the previously unseen fourth shield design!

And a family photo:

I'm working 6 days in a row now with very long days so I doubt my updates will be regular. However I hope to finish my Lord of Khorne and maybe start on the next four Nurgle Warriors. Comments on the current state of the blog are always appreciated, inspiration will be needed as my job is mind-numbing!

Thanks!
