Heros in units questions
« on: Jun 30, 2012, 06:03:56 AM »
A few quick ones...

1. Heros and Lords must be in the front rank unless FC is there and then you have the option correct.  So if you have infantry with five models per rank and the unit has FC and BSB, the BSB has to be in the front rank.

2. Once a hero/lord is in a unit can he move within it as they move?  I know he can make way to get into combat, but can he move otherwise?

1. As far as I've understood the rule, FC must always be in front until combat, upon which characters can make way. Your example is correct, if you have room in the front rank for characters then they must be in the front rank; otherwise, if you're running 3-wide, such as Ogres do, FC is first rank, characters are second, until combat.

2. I don't know. I thought that once they're in their spot, they can only move via the Make Way rule. I don't believe the BRB says anything about characters being able to move within the unit outside of combat. I'd say no, personally, because fluff-wise, if the characters are moving around and messing about, wouldn't the rank-n-file get all confused? lol :P Idk though...

OK.

That is what I thought for #1.

I thought the same thing for #2, but I have seen people move hero/lords from side to side within a unit while moving and have not been able to find anything in the rules.  I too, do not believe you can move them once they are placed.

How about a new one...
#3.  During a combat reform once a battle is over, can you move a hero/lord?

Well, if you're playing at a hobby shop, the best thing to do is to catch an employee and check with them!

As for #3, I don't see why not, but again, I don't know if the rules cover that sort of thing. I think it'd be more appropriate for them to shuffle during a combat reform rather than just moving about. But, hopefully someone a litte more experienced than I could respond to this thread with a more knowledgeable answer :P lol

As far as I know you can indeed move a character in a unit around, as long as he remains in the first rank and all that.  BUT if he moves to another spot then the unit can't march.

Not sure why I think this, still haven't replaced my stolen rulebook.

#3: During a reform you can rearrange a unit entirely, it's numbers of ranks and files and so on.  With that in mind I don't see a reason you can't move the character around as well. (given off course he still remains in the front rank and all that)  A combat reform is simply a normal reform you get for free because you just vanquished an enemy (be it they ran or was destroyed) only it happens in the combat phase.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

Anyone know where this is?

Pg #8 General FAQ:

Q: Can characters change position inside a unit as part of a
normal move?(p97)
A: Yes, as long as they end up in the rank closest to the front of
the unit that has a space in. It is also worth remembering that
even if only the character moves the whole unit will count as
moving that turn. Having a belligerent officer barge his way
through the unit is not conducive to a good round of shooting!

And your still able to march.
