My first army list in a decade! C&C and advice on magic items please!
tarantulus:
So, despite being an avid painter, I haven't played since 5th edition (mid 90's, the one with the Lizardmen/Bretonnian box set) so I'm well out of practice. here is the base list, with no magic Items since I'm clueless there...

Rock eye 5
Fencer's blades 35
Glittering scales 25
OR
Slaughtermaster w/ironfist 253 Lore of the great maw
Hellheart 50

Glittering scales 25
Brusier BSB w/Ironfist 109

6 Ogres ironfists 222

6 Ironguts 288

Its a solid start, although you'll need to expand quite a bit before you can field both a Tyrant AND a Slaughtermaster (remember, it's 25% of max points :D)
First, there's no reason to field Trappers in units larger than 10. Now for the magic items.
If you're not running a Tyrant, then the most common combo you see is with a slaughtermaster general and a BSB in a unit of ironguts with the Standard of Discipline. This increases the general's leadership to 9, which he can then impart to all units within 12 inches. Or you can put it on your BSB and put the two of them in your Ogre bulls.
The Crown of command is another very common and useful item. It will grant stubborn to the unit it is in, meaning they NEVER take negative modifiers when testing against their leadership.
The Rockeye is both extremely handy AND a bargain at 5 points. Pick a unit in line of sight and the opponent has to tell you about all magic items there, as well as any hidden characters.
A great defensive combo is Fencer's Blades and Glittering Scales. This will give you WS10, and all attacks against you receive a -1 to hit, meaning that anyone WS4 or lower will hit you on 6s only.
Also, in case you haven't checked the FAQ, Ogre slaughtermasters and butchers can take magic armors.

Oops, don't have the rulebook so I wasn't sure about that sort of thing!

care to elaborate on that? why wouldn't you take more?
Thanks for the pointers so far, very handy!
if I put my BSB in a unit, do they lose their standard bearer?
MasteroDisaster:
The idea with the trappers is the keep them minimal, seeing as it doesn't matter how many Gnoblars in the unit, the enemy charging them still only take 1 difficult terrain test on the charge. 10x Gnoblars + Trappers is a nice compact 50 point unit, any more Gnoblars is just wasting points on a job that a smaller unit can do just as well.
In regards to the BSB the answer is no. You benefit from having the unit's SB and well as the BSB when it comes to combat resolution so in effect it's +2 to combat res if your unit has both it's own standard bearer and the BSB as well.
Generally people don't tend to run a Tyrant, the more common way of smashing things up is (for a 2000+ pts game anyways) generally a Slaughtermaster, BSB and often a Firebelly or Butcher with the Lore of Beasts for it's signature spell (+1S & T). Tyrants stats are at best slightly better than a Bruiser, the only real benefit in my opinion is their Ld of 9 but they are considerably more expensive. A Slaughtermaster even though more expensive than that will serve you better especially with some nice rolls on your Lore of the Great Maw.
Firebelly's also have a few nifty combos, one being giving them the Ruby Ring of Ruin so they can cast 2 Fireballs a turn taking advantage of the Lore of Fire's attribute Kindleflame, they can then also take your armies Dispel Scroll for the remaining 25 points of it's allowance. Not to mention their breath attack is always a nice addition to any combat phase especially if combined with the Dragonhide Banner, 2D6 S4 + 2D6 S3 hits, plus your impact hits if you charge, plus standard attacks and finally stomp attacks if applicable. The potential is quite scary.
If I were you I'd take a look at a few other lists on the forum to get an idea how others kit out their characters and then make your own mind up based on the combos you have seen. Good luck with the list, it would be nice to see the finished article when you have a good idea what you want in your army :)

Thanks everyone, those are some great tips! I'm going to bulk out my ogres/IGs and add a block of maneaters and a firebelly I think.
