Eating anything, everything and anyone - An Ogre blog
« on: Jun 08, 2012, 08:03:51 PM »
Now I finally came around to starting my own Gnoblog :D

Let me start with introducing myself. I am a 25 year old Dane. I have just finished a master degree in Nanoscience from University of copenhagen.

Ogre kingdom is my 5th army. I started years back with Dwarfs followed by Dark elves then High elves and Orcs and goblins. I have never managed to paint a complete army as I find it much more fun to buy assemble and play with the figures rather than paint them. Although I think it is much nicer to play with fully painted armies.

I am creating this blog to post battle reports and progress when I paint something. Any comments advice about tactics or new painting skills I could obtain will be very welcome :).

I usually play with 4 good friends. Normally we play with low power armies and do not use every dirty trick in the book. We very rarely use special characters and ask permission if we should want to bring one along. We play with a simplified line of sight very similar to ETC's rule system, rather than GW's true line of sight which none of us really like.

I really like the list of achievements that is found on the ogre stronghold, I went though the list and I already have some achiements :D

First update I will just show my firebelly. I recently converted it from the ninja maneater as I do not like the finecast material. If only GW made the fantastic new model in metal. Oh well here it goes..

Are those juggeling pins?

Cool conversion!  I was gonna turn my ninja into a butcher, but this may sway me a little...

Thanks :)
Nope, It's supposed to be vials with liquid for firebreathing ;)

You're welcome to borrow the idea if you wish. :) It was quite easy to make the flames (well at least easier than I initially thought).

Here is a WIP photo of my BSB.

I love this blog. I find it awesome when people convert their own vision of a particular unit; in this example, your firebelly.

I can't wait to see more of your Ogres, and the general standard of your work is an exciting prospect for further updates :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

I played a game of ogres vs empire last night the game was 2500 points.

I tried a list meant for an upcoming local tournament, the rules pack and restrictions for the tournament has not come up yet but I tried to make an educated guess and created my list from that.

I brought

340   lvl 4 heaven talisman of preservation GW
189   lvl 2 firebelly ruby ring of ruin GW
169   lvl 2 maw butcher scroll GW
184   Bruiser BSB Armour of destiny Ironfist

212   6 ogres Ironfist mus banner
180   5 Ogres Ironfist mus banner
265   5 ironguts FC lookout gnoblar banner of dicipline

21   sabretusk
21   sabretusk
268   6 leadbelchers mus
348   6 maneaters mus champ 3x add hw 2x GW scout stubborn
132    3 yhetees

170   Ironblaster

2499

And my opponent brought, from memory:

general of the empire
wizard lord with death magic lvl 4
wizard hero death magic lvl 2
warrior priest
BSB

50 halberdiers
with 25 swordsmen detachment and 20 xbows detachment
30 greatswords with 10 xbows detacchment
10 reikguards knights

a great canon

With a potential deadly magicphase against me with my opponent almost certain of getting purple sun I should be careful in the magic phase.
he got every spell in the lore except fate of bjuma
I roll flamecage, flaming sword, toothcracker, bullgorger, chain lightning, uranons thunderbolt, iceshard blizzard and curse of the midnight wind.

We rolled blood and glory for the scenario and I won the roll for side.

I started deploying my sabretusks, and with my opponent having so few drops I easily out deployed him. I made sure that my Ironblaster was not visible to his cannon because I would not like to loose that early on. I also stayed out of range of the large xbow unit to make sure that I, with such small units I brought, was not shot to death. The forest the xbows deployed in was a venom thicket.

On my side the deployment was, starting from the bottom, yhetees, sabretusk, large ogre unit, small ogre unit with firebelly and maw butcher, Ironguts with general and BSB, leadbelchers, sabretusk and maneaters
on his side was the swordsmen, halberdiers with priest and bsb, large xbows with lvl 2, great swords with general, small xbows with lvl 4, canon and reiksguard knights behind the cliff.

start turn 1

I won the roll for the first turn, despite my opponent being finished first with his deployment.
In the movement phase I blocked the knights with a sabretusk and positioned the maneaters for a flankcharge should he opt to overrun. The leadbelchers moved up for a shot at the small xbows with the lvl 4. The yhetees moved around the flank with the other cat, staying out of charge range of the swordmen.  The ironblaster moved forward to gain range and line of sight to the canon.

In the magic phase I had 6 dice and tried a thunderbolt on the knights and a flaming sword on the leadbelchers both was dispelled.
The leadbelchers managed 28 shots but only hit 7 times, this resulted in 6 dead xbows but they did not panic. The Ironblaster took 2 wounds off the cannon,

He responded by not charging the sabretusk with his knights backing them up 4". The rest of the combat units moved forward at full speed. He did not notice that the swordmen exposed their flank to the yhetees for an easy charge.

In the magic phase he tried to reduce the ld of the Ironblaster and then spirit leeching it. Without succes though.

Most of his xbows were out of range and the last 4 of the small unit did not do any damage. The cannon shot at the Ironblaster taking 3 wounds off the infernal thing.

start turn 2

In my turn 2 I charged his swordsmen with my yhetees not considering they gained hatred and all other nasty special rules from the parent unit.
The sabretusk still blocked the reiksguard knights, and I moved the lead belchers even closer making sure that thay were not visible to the greatswords.

In the magic phase I managed to get a flamecage off on the greatswords and a uranons thunderbolt with IF on the knights, witch resulted in 2 casualties and me loosing 3 levels left with only chain lightning.
In the shooting phase despite their best efforts the leadbelchers onlt managed 4 wounds on the small xbow group, where one was on the lvl 4. The Ironblaster kills the canon

Moving to the close combat phase the yhetees kills a lot of swordmen with no wounds back. The swordmen are steadfast and reform to face the yhetees.

His turn 2 he charge the sabre tusk with his reiksguards knights killing it with ease and reform to face the maneaters. He move up his xbowmen realising I was not coming to him to fight now that his canon is dead, 4 of their numbers dies because of the venom thicket forest. The halberdiers forwards. The greatswords remains as they are affected by flamecage. They are joined by the wizard lord, which does not count as moving, we looked it up.

In the magic phase the  lvl 4 wizard suffers a miscast on one of the spells, I do not remember which but is reduced to lvl 1.

In close combat several more swordmen dies, but they are still steadfast.

start turn 3

In my turn 3 I charge my sabretusk into the flank of the already engaged swordmen to help the yhetees. And the maneaters into the reiksguards.

The rest of the army slowly moves forward now that the xbows are within range. The Leadbelcher moves to close range of the greatswords  still staying out of line of sight.

In the magic phase the firebelly cast flaming sword of ruin on the leadbelchers and suffers a miscast and is reduced to lvl 1.

In the shooting phase the leadbelchers lets go of a salvo and I roll very well for the number of shots with 13 hits but 8 1’s to wound and a good save only few greatswords die.

Moving to the close combat phase. The swordmen fail their fear test and are reduced to WS 1 with the yhetees frost aura the yhetees hit automatically. They are however still steadfast with a single rank and remains in combat.

In the fight between the maneaters and the knights the knights are wiped out with only few wounds to the maneaters. I briefly consider an overrun which would take me behind his lines but end up with a reform facing the center instead.

In his turn 3 he continues the long march towards my army. The greatswords wheel to face the leadbelchers opening themselves up for a flankcharge from the large bull unit, and his halberdiers risk a flank shot from the ironblaster and not being able to see it if I move it onto the hill.

In the close combat phase the swordsmen manages to kill a yhetee but there are only 7 left. They still remains in the combat.

start turn 4

I multi charge the greatswords with my ogrebulls my leadbelchers and the maneaters. But fail with the maneaters. The Ironblaster moves up to get a flankshot on the halberdiers

In the shooting phase the Ironblaster shoots at the warrior priest in the corner of the unit and since none of the halberdiers want to sacrifice themselves for the priest he fails the lookout sir and is killed with 5 other halberdiers.

In the close combat phase the swordsmen are reduced to 2 and no longer being steadfast they break and are run down by the yhetees and sabretusk. The greatswords are fighting a losing battle against the ogres but luckily their general are with them and they stand stubbornly

In my opponents turn he reforms with his halberdiers looking at the combat with the greatswords hoping to charge the rear of the ogre unit next turn.

In the combat more greatswords die and the leadbelchers take a single casualty.

Start turn 5

In my turn 5 I charge the rear of the halberdiers with the ironblaster, the halberdiers being locked in combat not able to help the greatswords the greatswords are slowly wittled down catching the fleeing general with my leadbelchers. The rest of the game is to kill the BSB and reduce the halberdiers to 7 men.

A great victory for the ogres!  And a massacre of the not-so-proud men of the empire. It was a game that was won in the deployment phase and a massacre that was won by mistakes from my opponent not thinking about flankcharges or rear charges.

enjoy
