What would you do with 175 pts?
« on: Apr 13, 2012, 08:47:11 PM »
The title pretty much cover it, what would you throw in your army with 175 points?  The question is purposely vauge because im curious to see any possiblity that anyone can think of.  Basically i want to know what would you do if you made an army that pretty much covered all the bases you want it to cover, but you still have some wiggle room left over.

Assume that there is no way to go over the cap in any of the sections either points-wise or duplicate unit-wise.  Also assume that core has been filled and that other must includes (BSB, a few sabertusks, etc.) have already been taken care of.

For the sake of promoting creativity (and forcing me to destroy my list up till this point) you could go up to 200ish if you think theres something thats an extra awesome idea.

Obvious choice is the one that fits it well - Ironblaster.

3 Maneaters with a Bellower and Heavy Armour falls right into that option.

2 Mournfang with IF, HvArmor, Bellower, Banner of Swiftness is exactly 175 and would be one heck of a "flanking unit" for the price.

4 LBs with a Musician are just over that, without just under that. Throw out a lot of shots with a small footprint.

4 Yhetees are 176 and are not bad for zipping into the flanks and taking out chaff and warmachines.

One unit of eight Sabretusks, for the same reason as above.

Well, its more of a question than an answer but if I already have an Ironblaster and a 6 man unit of sniping maneaters would I be better off with a second unit of small scouting Maneaters or a second Ironblaster?

I like the Scouting Maneaters. Unless you are talking about a huge game where the table is going to be packed anyway it will force my foe to spread his troops out a bit in his deployment or risk giving me a flanking position from the Maneaters. That in turn lets me focus my troops on smaller portions of his army at a time.

Suppose I should expand on it now. Its for 3000 point game and I'm already taking a block of 13 bulls with 3 characters, 11 iron guts with 1 character, 3 ironblasters, 4 Sabertusks, and 4 mournefangs. I could add another iron blaster but that might start to feel out of hand. 4 leadbelchers was what I was thinking but I never seem to get a good use out of them. I always play on 6x4 tables soda you think there would be room for scouts? I was thinking of dropping an iron blaster also and putting in 6fighty maneaters or adding a rank to the iron guts. I run them 4 across.

My suggestion seems best then, since none of the others add anything new.
Win or lose hero or villain, he will be original and wont be boring.

I haven't played larger games than 2400 points, though I guess scouting would also work at 3000.

I'd go for the LBs or maneaters. The scouting maneaters can work great if you vanguard the larger unit (or the other way around). Combined with fast units as Mournfangs and Sabres, you can hopefully outmanoeuvre/put pressure on quite a few armies.

But since you haven't got any Leadbelchers in your current list, I'd get the LBs. For me they fill a role that few other Ogre units can manage. They're great as chaff removers and for depleting scary CC units you don't want to engage straight up.

Hope this may help a bit :)

Ironblaster + enchanted shield is good.

I support the Hunter idea even if I really can't think of an ogre army without leadbelchers, both for performance and appeal. In any case I find a lone beastkiller hunter very fluffy and fun to play (with an harpoon launcher maybe? Not sure because it would lose some mobility...)

Fielding a unit for 175 points I think an Ironblaster is a no-brainer. (maybe 2 Mournfangs)

If you just need to spend 175 points, then I'll probably make my Irongut unit/Maneater unit bigger.

Maybe a Lvl 2 Firebelly with some doodahs just for some extra punch?
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

I'd spend it on a pair of gorgers, using a little of the extra points you've allowed. :)

How are gorgers this time around? they are certainly unexpected and thats half the fun, but do they ever do anything usefull?

I love gorgers - when I have "leftover" points, I usually try to squeeze 1 or 2 in. They bring some good things to the table that no other ogre does - namely, ItP (via frenzy) killing blow, ambushers and unbreakable.

Perhaps my gorgers over-perform, but usually they accomplish what I want them to do: and usually that's get rear/flank charges, distract war machines, etc.

People will argue against gorgers because they say that sabertusks (and ironblasters) are better war machine hunters - well, I say if you are using a gorger as a war machine hunter (primarily) then you are using it wrong.

Assuming you either have two IBlasters (or simply prefer not to run another), I think the obvious choice would have to be a pair of ranked gnoblar units with full commands.  They make great fodder and flank protection, as well as building denial.

oh i have three haha.  A normal one, im working on a giant hellblaster one made out of steam tank cannons, and then im going to make one in the style of the monster bombard from medieval 2 swarming with gnoblars.  I'm out of ideas for a third and i want to mix it up too. The gnoblars were my original plan b after the leadbelchers.  I used to run them with the old book but i havent made to much use of large units of them in the new book.
