For those interested in using wargs as sabertusks...
« on: Feb 18, 2012, 04:57:38 AM »
I recently bought a box of the "Wild Wargs" from GW's LOTR model range to convert and use as sabertusks, because the finecast models are kinda pricey and I've never really been a fan of em anyway.

Here's a quick size comparison against a butcher/SM and a high elf:

And here's the finished conversion!

This is probably the most greenstuff I've ever used, so the tails/fangs aren't super impressive up close. They do get the job done, though, and definitely help the wargs transform into felines. I used the plastic tufts of grass that come on each warg sprue as the furry bit at the end of each tail. I'll probably use some liquid greenstuff to smooth it out a bit and get rid of my thumbprints .

They fit in perfectly with the other beasts in the ogre army... the almost look like miniature mournfangs with their warg-y faces .

A Petgnoblar fer ye fer answerin' this question and fer convertin' them beasties as well. Nice work, sir!

A slightly unrelated sidenote: Technically, since the LotR Warg are Supersize-me Hyenas, they are sorta felinish anyways. I discovered to me surprise that their RL counterparts are, in fact, related to cats (being part of the suborder of feliform carnivora , according to Wikipedia). Probably, the sort of relatives you rather not talk about, but well...

I wouldn't have known, had not one of my D&D players chosen to play a Gnoll Beastmaster Ranger in our 4th ed campaign.

Nice idea.  I like it... I've already dumped money in to a big box of Wargods huntmaster guys to get mine, otherwise, this would be good for me too.

They look GREAT.

Unfortunately you will never be able to use them in any tournaments as all lotr models have copyrights that forbid you from using them for the other gaming systems  :(

Only in official GW tournaments. Other tournaments usually don't care, especially because there is no chance of misinterpreting the models - the Wargs cannot display anything else than Sabretusks in an Ogre army. I once even played against a Chaos Dwarf army made exclusively of Confrontation/Rackham models. :)

I like the conversion alot, the Wargs are larger than I thought they would be. Good job!

I read on another forum that a guy at warhammer world asked there and they are allowed to be used as sabretusks.  I thought the rule was if it is made by or was made by Games Workshop, then it is allowed.  It's why you get away with models from BattleMasters and Talisman and the like.

The LotR retrictions only applies to GW representing the LotR models in their other ranges not us if i am not mistaken.  So you can use those conversions in GW tournaments, and even enter them into Goldon Demon, (because it doesnt break the made by GW rule) but GW will not post pictures of them on the blog or in White Dwarf.  IIRC someone took silver in a golden deamon fantasy category a few years back and in White Dwarf where the picture should have been it said something to the effect of "due to licesnsing restrictions with New Line Cinemas, we cannot show this entry as it contains peices from the LotR range"
