Sky Titan Ravagers
« on: Feb 08, 2012, 10:00:59 PM »
So, tribe name not exactly decided but yeah..about time I (re)started my gnoblog and did some actual work on my boys.

So I've built up a fair collection of ogres from good ol' eBay. Roughly 75 odd with about half painted badly (contemplating selling on if cleaning them fails), a Rhinox rider, a Rhinox rider I'm making from scratch, 1 scratch built scrap launcher and 1 half scratch built, a thundertusk in it's box, a big plastic rhino that will have the spare bits added to it and become a stonehorn, 2 hunters, the limited edition bruiser, some sabretusks, about 70 gnoblars and 10 trappers, 2 mournfang in their box and a few non warhammer models I've collected to use for conversions, proxies etc.

So quite a mountain of painting, amateur hour greenstuff modelling and lots and lots of sweat ;)

Now I actually got most of these boys a good while ago but work, time, motivation, getting married etc got in the way but I've kicked myself into getting a little started and got 2 ogres test painted to A:) get my ass into gear and B:) see if I can actually paint.

You see I've picked up a load of paints, brushes etc, all the modelling tools and bits and bobs but..the big but.. I've not painted a model since I was about 17..which is 16 odd years ago. Back then I also had armies mostly 99% unpainted too 0.o

Anyhoo some quick fluff:

The tribe wandered for many years doing the usual selling services and spanking different races for good food and hungry bellies but do to some bad weather took shelter in a ravine that later got blocked in forcing them to climb higher int he mountains to find a way around the dangerous terrain.

What they found was a Sky Titan castle..hidden high in the mountains from the time before the giants were routed from their high homes. Mostly stripped bare they have further pillaged any items of use. So expect to see some giant armour, weapons and other items from big folks hands.

Some pics:

These guys don't really have anything to do with the fluff yet and were my test paints to see how the hell things work. Tried the general tallarn flesh skin colour scheme and general paint scheme with tips from Byronics tutorial and all the other blogs I've read in the last two years. I jumped straight in and missed a few mould lines so forgive those but I really wanted to just get some paint to plastic ;)

Still a few things to touch up and I'm generally happy with them. I have learnt lots from painting these two and will do more on the next guys. Painting is addictive :) Not really happy with the rusted ironfist though. Feel it looks like chipped orange paint rather than rust so going to work on that.

Looking good and like the rust :)

Like you, alot of mine have been picked up via Ebay and some need some TLC.
I've just started 'properly' on my ogres after building them up over the past 3-4 months or so. Life has a habit of getting in the way lol.

Come March though I should be able to make a serious push in to getting them table ready, my girlfriend has even started to help out :). Considering she's never painted a fig in her life before now, she's alarmingly good.

Lots to paint, and precious enough time-Ah I love this hobby of ours!

Yup, I'm going to test cleaning up one of the heavily painted ogres I rescued from the bay and if it fails they will be sold on ;) Fingers crossed.

I really also need 2 ironblasters too and was planning on making one and buying one. See if I can find a little cannon someplace ;)

Try Ebay-Play Mobil or similar iirc ;)
Some reasonably sized toys out there cheap and fit for conversion.
I've got some sorry looking 2nd hand Ogres from Ebay, but looking forward to getting stuck in and seeing what can be done!

Looking good.

If I was to give advice it would be to include some green or blue on your bases. The red pants, skin tone and to a degree the weapons all have a bit of the same feel. Looking at a colour wheel shows that you are likely in need of some greens or blue on the model to really make it pop. The basing could be enough for these, though the verdigris on gut plates does a bit of work here too.

Cheers Warlordsteve ;)

Totally agree. Basing is yet to be really fleshed out yet. I was contemplating adding some kind of old stone work, celtic kind of ruins to suggest the old castle they have plundered and have a ton of cork to add for rocks and height for them. Will be grass, bushes and possibly snow on there too.

So not a painting update but a little modelling. Decided that to fit the theme I want to create (as I'm a cheapskate and won#t buy the resin types out there) custom bases for all my ogres - or at least add bits to the bases.

So I started with by some sculpey and making a set of 12 fitting together kinda 40mm bases. Will probably be my Lionguts (name will make sense later) or possibly just ogres. Also made a pile of stones for a character and another for a maeater captain I'm working on.

Now this is how my brain works. I decide that I need to make one of my butchers stand out from the others so he screams SLAUGHTERMASTER! So I grab him and shove him on my desk. Now I cram photos and images I like into a folder and look through it now and then for inspiration and there is a certain pic (below) that as soon as I saw it I thought.. maneater! and Captain at that.

I then decided..screw working on my SM lets convert this guy to tbe that guy! He may even double as my Tyrant if I use one till that model gets done.

So wip shots below!:

First the Cool pic:

Now the WIP:

Still need to decide on the head for the dude and lots of work on him yet to do. VERY WIP.

Holy buckets (it is a Midwestern US thing...)!!!  That concept piece is fantastic!  Any chance we couldg et a few more pics of your sculpting work, specifically of your 'Capt on base'?

Exciting :-D

The style reminds me a little of the privateer press trolls from Hordes...  and I love those models...

No, totally get it. When I saw it I was like...  :D

Couple of WIP shots from today with some high quality mock up shots. Note if the colours are blocky you may need to upgrade your GFX card as its all HD..honest.  :P

So, his beard will be added later as well as a chain coif neck piece. Going to add a necklace of items at some point, a 3rd gun on his left hip and an axe behind it, a crossbow on his back right hip, 2 belts slung around him to hold these gubbins, a sheild on his left shoulder/ arm, some metal blocks possibly on the right arm.

Thoughts?

Cloak or raggedy type cloth top for the back and little over the shoulders?

Elbow armour bits like Ironguts have?

Anything else?

Oh and my GS FU is still very much learning..this is the first time I've really doen chainmail so go easy ;)

Really it looks quite good.  Your sword is a great match to the concept - mad props for that!

Your accessories plan sounds good.  No complaints there.  One thing I'd try to do to help match the concept (though you've personalized it some already) would be to try and bat-ify the ears.  Stylistically, they seem to match the sword and could help unify the vibe.

Your chainmail isn't half bad, either.  It looks like a bit more practice may be in order to get used to making your lines even, but the wavy nature of the links is captured well.  Your chain is magnificent.  Very well done there.

As for the cloak, I approve.  I'd even consider taking it down to the ground to highlight his dude's epicness.

Progress update: So not jumped back on the painting wagon but played a game, loved how my maneaters fared and decided I needed to model them good. So been gluing and green stuffing. All is still very much WIP of course;

So:

TOP LEFT:

Body build up of a soon to be Chaos Dwarf Maneater. Going to go a mask/ helm like the new forgeworld guys, plated armour like them too and a 2 handed axe which is above him executioner style. Also the body of an ogre I'm extending that will be Khorne perhaps..still not decided and his weapon too in the corner on the right.

TOP RIGHT:

Well, thanks to Wildcard for the model. Was going to be a maneater but decided he suits being a dual wielding (fencers blades) slaughtermaster. Fluff wise he starves himself considerably so he's quite a lean butcher but with a flesh sewn tunic and cleavers. Also 3 other implements that will be on his belt not in the picture.

2ND TOP LEFT:

Orc maneater WIP and the dismembered guy again.

Middle RIGHT: Sabres made up, based and GS'D.

Bottom RIGHT: Maneater capt has his neck chain of sorts and a belt. Also the orc maneaters other weapon.

Bottom LEFT: My BSB and also alittle look at the SM's tools. This guy will get much more shots when he is finished and primed. Just need to finish the horns on his helm, the banner details, his back and currently the banner arm is magnetised. Want to leave it that way and have it seamlessly fit so no join shows. Working on that..

So, will do another update when I take photos of the ogre work I've been doing but for now it's actually soem OnG goodness. So..what do you do when your pal uses a mangler squig..doesn't have a model, doesn't want to spend £36 odd quid on one and you have soem sculpey laying around and a star wars reek model (bought to turn into a rhinox one day)? Make your own!

So we decided that he will maybe use 2 one day so to make 2 models (1 a base) rather than 2 squigs on a base. Also easier to make, store, balance etc. Now I'm no sculpey expert having made..0 models with it and recently just a few bases but they aren't looking too bad.

The idea is to go over the hardened sculpey with GS to add the scales, flesh marks, teeth etc and add chains, fanatics, mushrooms and gubbins along the way.

Front shot, Reek shot before I chopped him in 2 and a sideways lick shot to show the boby bits.

Lots of shaving, sanding, sculping to do!

And yes, dolmio lids make great bases ;)
