New Year's (Hobby) Resolutions 2011
« on: Dec 29, 2011, 08:47:57 PM »
It's that time again! Time to sit down and look at the year in review before planning some resolutions for the next year. If you made a list last year you can find it here.

So first let's see how I did this year on the resolutions I made in January 2011.

- Finish all the Blood Bowl teams I have started - FAIL?
I did manage to "finish" several teams - my Ogres, Vampires (which weren't even started when I made this pledge), Chaos Dwarfs (again, these were started in 2011) and the Amazons. I didn't finish two of the teams I had sitting around at the start of this pledge (Orcs and  Lizardmen) but I am working on them now.

- Play on the tabletop more - FAIL
I don't think I managed to get down to the FLGS once for a game of WHFB. Crazy!! Such a failure!

- Stop buying and start painting more models - FAIL?
While I didn't buy as much as previous years, and I did immediately start assembling and painting most of what I did buy, I still bought new stuff and didn't paint as much as I would have liked.

- Don't start any new tabletop games - FAIL?
Bought a Necromunda gang (Thanks Hragged!) and started assembling them to play with the local Blood Bowl folks. Never actually got any games in though...

- Be an even better sportsman - WIN
Small incremental improvements, and I still have ways to improve, but I definitely felt like more of a "good sport" while losing all of those Blood Bowl tournaments I attended. I even got a few "best game" votes!

- Get another four issues of the Bellower released - FAIL?
It's really hard to do a good webzine with some regularity. Hats off to all of those out there still organizing and releasing them... I was not as good at it. Managed to get a few issues released and the Bellower has migrated to a blog which I count as a success on some level.

So 1 out of 6 resolutions isn't too bad right? Right!?

Here is a (hopefully) more attainable list for this year:

- Update the Bellower blog with "real" content at least once a week all year: I advocated for the switch, and I see a lot of potential, now I need to help build a strong web community in a secondary medium for the Stronghold. I will need help though! If you are reading this and wish to contribute in any way please let me know!

- Finish painting all of the Blood Bowl teams I have started: That means the Chaos, Lizardmen, and Orc teams all need attention. I am not counting the in limbo Khemri team I sort of started earlier this year.

- Play some WHFB somewhere, somehow: I know there are still folks playing at the FLGS and I haven't even touched the new Ogre Kingdoms book since it was released. With Vampire Counts on the way in January I have zero reason to not show up and play.

- Attend as many Blood Bowl tournaments as possible: I went to about a half dozen events this year and I hope to match or surpass that number this year. I am just starting to get "in" with the community so perhaps I won't have to be seen as a "noob" this time around.

- Paint more models then you buy: I know I won't go a whole year without buying any new models but I will strive to paint way more and buy a lot less! I do have my eyes on the new Vampire Counts Black Knights though...

Well I can't do much worse than I did last year, but that is still a pretty intense list. The focus is really on painting and playing games so it shouldn't be too hard to get done. We'll see how I fare when we review this again next year! What do you hope to achieve in your new year of hobby?

Well so far my new years hobbying resolutions are:

1) Get assembling and painting my Ogres...Properly and not just in fits and starts!

2) Come up with a winning tribe that doesn't suffer too heavily at the hands of magic heavy foes

3) Have a proper game of WHFB with the above forces and not to keep using much older versions of the game like I have been for the past 20 years or so

4) Read and digest the new OK book (when it eventually arrives from Maelstrom)

5) NOT to go overboard on buying new stuff, but to paint the stuff I actually have first

6) Keep to one or two 'side projects' but nothing too extreme or all consuming-Maybe get round to that 'Runequest style' mixed human army

7) Finish my VBCW stuff (only 30 or so figs to go)

8) Finish my ECW stuff (only 40 or so figs to go)

9) Get round to constructing that Hirst Arts (amongst others) Dungeon crawl/RPG project I've been promising myself for the past 5 years or so....

So, not much and perfectly do-able then...ahem

Late New Year's resolution: lose all the weight I've put on over the past few weeks! My gut has grown too big after all that eating :P

I succeeded! :D

But I've been stuffing myself again this month :P

My list for 2012:
1. Finish painting all the Ogre minis I bought in 2011.
2. Sell some of my unused non-Ogre minis to fund more Ogres and get those painted too!
3. Join or start a local wargaming club.
4. Write some articles for the Bellower blog.
5. Paint a Necromunda gang.
6. Don't succumb to the temptation of buying another Warhammer army.
7. Update my Gnoblog!

We'll see how it goes!

And I was gone for two days, so we got "Ninja Prophet" Randroid to step in  ;)

Mine from last year:
So my 2011 resolutions:
1. Play in new countries, where I haven't played before (I really like playing in other environments.)
2. Play more games with friends (those are harder to get and usually harder to play then tournaments.)
3. I'm trying for the 10 tournaments in a year again.
4. Getting rid of some none playable armies or making them playable again (which means a competative army) - this means: dwarves daemons and warriors of chaos.
5. finishing my bloodbowl stadium

1. Played in Switserland for the ETC, so PASS
2. doubt it, have been quite busy with real life and other hobbies.
3. nope, had maybe 5 or 6 tournaments, see number two for excuse
4. hmm, almost got rid of a 40k eldar army and almost restarted warriors of chaos. close but no cigar
5. nope, actually abandoned the idea completely.

So in terms of this hobby, I had a 20% achievement.
Luckily I have other hobbies, where I have been improving my game.

For next year, I'm not going to set me any goals.
I will play some tournaments and friendlies and will be captaining the ETC team.
I also will add some models to my current armies, but most likely will not start a new one.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

Mine from last year;

Quote
Gaming Resolutions for 2011

1)Top 20 a biggish tourney.
2)Be higher than I currently am in the UK rankings (this will only happen if I improve my tourney game, which is what the real target is)
3)Bring in at least 1 'Best Painted award'
4)Have my Skaven finished, or thereabouts.
5)Don't sell my Wood Elves
6)Start my new Ogre army
7)Use my divine connection with the Great Maw to make a new Ogre book come out.

That should do, wonder if I'll go 7 for 7?  :>D

1) Nope, not even close, highest finish was abysmal.
2) Nope, in fact I've gotten worse.
I put this down to using Skaven, they really don't suit my playstyle and if I try any tricksy business it always goes wrong

3) Yay! brought in 2 and was close to 2 others
4) Thereabouts being the important word, but that's a pass
5) Nearly went to a few times but managed to stop myself  :D
6) Done, started a little later than I would've liked but still done.
7) Let no-one ever doubt my connection again!
Did I mention I play poker with the firemouth too?

5/7 isn't bad, but makes me realise how crap I am with the Skaven.

This year's;

Gaming Resolutions for 2012

1) Top 20 a large tournament
2) Finish higher in the UK rankings and get back to 3rd in my club (really this is just about getting better at competative play)
3) Win another 'best sportsman' award
4) Bring home 3 'best painted' awards
5) Win a game Vs Wildcard again  :P
6) Finish my OK army.
7) Don't start a new army
8 ) Host at least 3 painting comps on the Ogre Stronghold
9) Use my divine connection with the great maw to make some new Ogre models released
You can't be old and wise, and have youthful memory... even if you are FF

So, how did I do in 2011??

1) paint up my Orc army for the campaign weekend in April.
2) paint up at least two monsters for the transformation of kadon spell, to go with my big dragon.
3) get nominated for a painting award at one event this year.  Winning grants a bonus point.
4) to finish in the top 15 at an event this year (at an event of at least 60 players that is)
5) get the grey knight army painted up to 1500 points
6) if the ogres get a new army book, paint a new ogre army.
7) to have had a stress-free event this year

let's see:

1) YES and even had time to add a landship for giggles.
2) NO I painted several monsters, but none for this spell.
3) YES I was nominated at two events, for two different armies, but no bonus points for me.
4) YES although this is debatable really, I'm feeling that a 1st and a 2nd more than make up for one of the events not being quite 60 players.
5) NO proved to myself once again that I cant do other systems as I just dont have enough interest in them to paint stuff up.  project now up for sale.
6) YES now at 4000 points and climbing, loving doing them as well!
7) YES certainly had several events that could be described as stress free, ones where I could just relax and enjoy the games for their own sake.  this was my biggest achievement of last year.

not too shabby really!

so what's up for 2012 as I peer blearily at this January morning:

1) paint up a lizardman army to a level that surpasses any of my previous work
2) learn and practise at least one new painting technique
3) make no more than 12 hobby purchases in the coming year (not including paint/glue)
4) play in at least 8 events this year
5) actually keep a hobby journal - not just start one!
6) get another podium with ogres at an event
7) keep my gnoblogs properly and regularly updated with pics!
:gnoblar: x105 - keeping pace with my wins!

Ogre achievements: 65/101 latest: maneater (play in 5 different venues)

Latest Fantasy Result: ogre kingdoms vs. high elves - 1500 points - win!

8th edition: 105/25/12
New ogres: 36/6/5

As I didn't have the pleasure to be here last year, I'll just list some resolutions:

1. Don't start a new army God, I really like the strange meat
2. Play my first few games I feel silly for not having played yet, gief me more modells :(
3. Improve as a hobbyist Become a better painter (obviously needed) and converter (perhaps even more needed)
4. Make even more new friends at local WH clubs The community seems nice overall, and I look forward to get more involved)

You know that's right.

This seems like a good idea. Maybe it'll help.
1. 12 blog posts for Going Last.
2. Play at least five new games.
3. Sculpt a monster from scratch.
4. Build 2000 points worth of beastmen.

I'm notoriously bad at holding to pledges of any kind but I suppose it can't do any harm.

My resolutions for 2012:

1. Assemble and paint 2500 points of WoC by late February for the first big tourney of the year.

2. Assemble and paint 2500 points of classic O&G for our big Nationals tourney in August (the army choice may change by then but I'll be aiming to do a new army for the tourney regardless)

3. Take best painted at at least 2 tourneys.

4. Finish 1st in at least one of the tourneys I participate in (we don't have very many tourneys locally in the year).

5. Maintain my gnoblog with at least one update a month.

That's the idea. I was going to add in a joke about procrastination being a stronger talent than modeling, but it's probably best I leave that for later.

I was hoping this would rear it's head again!

Having looked back on my resolutions for last year, I have to say I failed at most of them. As a reminder, and for mocking purposes, I'll go through them below:

1) Paint an army that isn't for use in a tournament.
- FAIL.
I hardly did any painting at all for most of last year, and when I did it was to add to my Ogre army for an event. I really need to get back into the painting side of the hobby, but I have a few ideas in mind in order to achieve this.

2) Improve my gaming - measured by at least 3 top half finishes in tournaments this year. - PASS.
Winter Incursion helped me out a lot for this one, but all my good results came in smaller events. Looking at Rankings HQ I have the following:
7th/28 at Open War 15
8th/18 at The Dragon Slayers Big Bash 3
9th/46 at Milton Keynes Massacre 2011
34th/108 at Winter Incursion
Not bad, but I need to do better in the first few rounds of the bigger events.

3) Learn a non Games Workshop game, to the extent of playing at an event for that game. - FAIL.
But only due to the second part of that Resolution. I have bought into Warmachine, and was intending to go to an event for this in November, but the new Ogre book finally saw off this hope. I still have some figures, and it is an interesting game, so hopefully this year I can look to doing this.

4) Get rid of the models I no longer use to finance my hobby - or start using them again!
- PASS.
This was an easy one, as I don't make enough money to be able to spend a fortune on this hobby without selling stuff! Earlier in the year I offloaded all the random rubbish I had collected over the years - Ltd Edition stuff, parts of armies etc and last month I got rid of most of my 40K stuff too. I still have some things to sell, but the majority have gone.

5) Become a Tyrant ;) - PASS.
Plenty of time wasted enjoyably spent on this forum in the past 12 months has seen me reach this rather silly target!

3 out of 5 isn't bad, but I'll aim to do better!

So, on to this year's Resolutions...

1) Make a start on a new Fantasy army, and spend some time painting and/or converting the models. Start a Gnoblog to track my progress.
2) Improve my gaming - measured by at least 3 top half finishes in tournaments this year (2 of which have to be 60+ players)
3) Paint my Warmachine army, and go to an event for this system.
4) Update my Gnoblog more regularly with Tournament reports, within a week of the event.
5) Play more games outside of tournaments. This will include playing games at different points levels to the standard 2000-2500 points.

Some similar to last years, some with slightly higer or more specific aims. I have recently bought a load of new figures for the first one, but I'm trying to choose between two projects I want to start so this may take some time to get off the ground!
The answer to everything is sabretusks.  ;) There is no problem that can't be solved at least in part with kitties.

I'll add mine:

1) Finish my bear riders

2) Buy the landship and convert it to be either a ghost ship / sea ship as a count as mournfang / thundertusk

3) Join a new hobby club so I can play more

4) Play someone on this forum

5) Finish painting my army and start a plog with wacky fluff

6) Get the old FW giant

7) Finish my army to a level where I am happy with it and so I will only have to buy the odd few models now and again, to make it better, each time there is a new release

8) Attend at least 3 tournaments
