Tuesday, December 20: Game 5 - Mike - High Eves - 2500 points - Battle Line
I had: SM (level 4 - Heavens, Signature, #1, 4, 5) with Hellheart, Butcher (level 1 - Maw, #3) with Dispel Scroll, 12 units of 10 gnoblar trappers, 1 unit of 10 gnoblars, 3 units of 6 LB's (the flanking two units had bellowers), 4 ME's (ItP/Scout), Thudertusk, Iron Blaster
He had: Mage (level 4 - Life, 1, 2, 5, 6), Mage (level 1 - fire, signature), BSB, 2 units of 20 LSG, 13 archers, 12 SMoH, 40 Phoenix Guard, Chariot, Great Eagle, 2 RBT's. Items I know he had, dispel scroll and banner that gives +1d3 power dice.
Terrain: Building and two sets of obstacles (18" each of wall) played a part in the middle of the battle field, everything else was not really an issue.
Set-up: Nothing major, but the ME's did get to be placed behind and to the flank of the archers.
Break down of the game:
I win initiative without the +1
Turn 1
Ray: March all gnoblars forward.
FORGET to march ME's! Magic phase nothing happens. Shoot level 4 with IB, hit, wounds, makes 4+ ward. Kill two LSG with TT template. LB's to far back because of all the gnoblars to shoot.
Mike: Moved up and reformed his flank where the ME's were picking their noses. Magic phase nothing happens. Shot them with RBT, archers, and a unit of LSG killing one and leaving one with one wound left. Other RBT puts three wounds on TT.
Turn 2
Ray: ME's fail to charge. Everything else moves up. Magic phase nothing happens. LB's shoot. We have a disagreement on LoS and cover, he thinks the gnoblars provide cover to his units and so does the wall he is not in contact with, still only applying one. I don't argue about it, friendly game afterall, so I need 7's to hit, instead of 5's (1/3rd hitting goes to 1/12th). LB's shooting kills 4 LSG. IB is lined up to shoot down his reformed archers (could have hit 10), hits the first and doesn't bounce (
MISFIRED TWICE). Thundertusk
misfires. Harpoon his level 1 mage, wounds, no saves, inflict 1 wound only. The only time the harpoon hit in the three turns.
Mike: Chariot charges gnoblar trappers - passed DT - kills 4, they flee, he doesn't pursue and reforms. Magic phase nothing happens. Archers finish off ME's. RBT's miss. LSG kill 2 gnoblars.
Turn 3:
Ray: Gnoblars rally from chariot. Moves gnoblars around. 12-6 magic dice. Level 4 casts extended range Urannon's Thunderboltt at his level 4 with IF/
miscast. Makes look out sir (assuming you can do that vs magic) and those loses a level. Level 1 casts 12" toothcracker and gets IF/
miscast. Miscast does nothing (each took a hit, but neither was wounded). IB hits an obstacle and blows it up. TT misses. LB's shoot at things not behind cover (as I needed 7's even though they really wern't behind cover) and kill 4 PG and 4 SMoH.
Mike: PG, one unit of LSG, and Chariot charge different units of gnobalrs, chariot in flank so no traps. Magic phase is again pretty uneventful, he gets a few SMoH back from regrowth and +2 T on PG. Archers and both RBT's fail to wound the TT. Chariot runs down one unit. PG kill the other, but chariot is in the way to overrun. LSG causes the other to flee, he does not purse again, not sure why not.
<Mike had to then call the game as he schedule another game.>
So he killed the ME's (200) and two units of gnoblar trappers (100) and had one unit of GT fleeing (50) = 350 VP's. I got zero.
We did manage to kill 3+ models twice with the gnoblar trappers, once vs the PG (even with their ward save) and once against the LSG, so that was fun.
Hellheart never got used as he kept his mages between 21-24" away most of the time, did use the dispel scroll to make for one of the boring magic phases.
The two "warmachines" managed to inflict four wounds in three turns of shooting.
Lessons learned: Make sure you can articulate the rules correctly. One of our local judges arrived on turn 3 of the game and I called him over to explain, but it was to late by this time as I had already gone so we just kept it the same for his turn.
All gnoblar core does throw off your opponent. He didn't really know what to do and could have probably been in combat a turn earlier if he just came straight on (depending on charge rolls). I can see a few units being useful.
