Escalation League Battle Reports: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=19694.0

Final record (June-August): 13-2, 87% win-loss.
27/30 points in league play after the final round.
Tournament to come Saturday, Sept. 10th.

Three game tournament with new army book.  2000 points.  Saturday, September 10, 2011.

Game 1 - Ed, Peasant Bretonians, Dawn Attack

Special Rule: Shots in the dark. Turn 1 shooting attacks are made at -2, shooting attacks that don't roll to hit may shoot on a 4+. Turn 2 shooting attacks are made at -1, shooting attacks that don't roll to hit may shoot on a 3+.

Terrain: River running down the center of the table with a fording point near the middle. Small stand of trees that would get in my way just off center beside the river. Don't remember what our roll was for the mysterious forest, but you had to make dangerous terrain rolls when moving through.

Set Up: All my stuff ended up center or right flank. All Ed's ended up center and his right flank so we were on opposite corners of the board.

Ed had: level 4 Beasts, Level 2 Beasts, Level 1 Life, 40 men at arms w/ general and BSB, 20ish men at arms, 5 peasant yeomen, 2 trebuchets. 20ish bowmen, grail relique, skirmisher bowmen (?)
Beast spells for level 4: signature, 2, 3, 4. Beast spells for level 2: signature, 6. Life spell: 5.

Turn 1
Ray: IG, Ogres, both sabretusks march forward. Bonecusher kills two mounted yeomen. Ed uses silver mirror to stop something. LB's move and kill three men at arms.

Ed: No effective magic.Trebuchets fail to shoot. Archers do one wound on sabretusk.
<Scenario special rule really screwed Ed on turn 1.>

Turn 2
Ray: ST charges skirmisher bowmen, who stand and shoot, killing it. Ogres and ST charge mounted yeomen who flee. Messed up here as the second flee would have forced them to roll again most likely going off the table. Something new learned everyday. LB's kill four bowmen.

Ed: No effective magic. Dispel scroll used. Archers kills one IG. Trebuchets kill two IG.

Turn 3
Ray: No effective magic. Dispel scroll used. LB's kill four bowmen. IG charge big men at arms unit, who fail their fear test. Win big. No steadfast. Run and we catch them, killing general and BSB.

Ed: No effective magic. Hellheart used. Rolled a 2 = 10" and missed all his mages. Trebuchet kills three ogres.

Turn 4
Ray: Get toothcracker and tollguts on IG who reform to face trebuchets, archers, and other men at arms. LB's kill five bowmen.

Ed: WW on small men at arms. Transformation of Khadon into hydra.

<Pretty much from here on the grail knight were moving after the LB's and would never catch them. The skirmishing bowmen were heading for my table edge for bonus objective points. The three mounted yeomen had done the same. My lone sabretusk was doing the same on Ed's side. >

Turn 5
Ray: IG charged into the remaining men at arms who hold. Ogres charge hydra who flees. IG run down men at arm and over run into a trebuchet.

Ed: Rallies hydra. Shots some. Time called.

VP game: I lost a sabretusk. Ed lost his general, BSB, two of his casters, and both units of men at arms.

Notes: Scenario effectively gave me a free turn to move. Because of the setup it was needed. Ed's trebuchet dice didn't do much for him. He killed two IG and three ogres total. Magic was pretty much a wash the whole game. Nothing special of note.

New book notes:
1. LB's are AWESOME! They were putting out ~30 shots a turn.
2. Not having loremaster didn't hurt. I got the spells I needed - signature, bonecrusher, toothcracker, trollguts. Ended up getting this game two as well and could have game three but changed it up a bit. Rolled doubles on spells each game.
3. I like the sabretusks. Perfect for what they are supposed to do.

Game 2 - Tim, Bretonians, Battleline

Special Rule: Favored Winds. Start of each magic phase each player rolls a d3. the player who wins the roll may add the difference between the results rolled to their respective pool (casting or dispel).

Terrain: Nothing that mattered.

Set Up: I had IG, Ogres, and LB's across from his KotR and men at arms. My sabretusks were far on my left flank across from his trebuchet, 10 archers, and three pegasi knight. His other KotR were angled for a flank charge (building protecting his flank) on my right side.

Tim had: level 4 caster with life, level 2 with beasts, general, BSB, two units of KotR each about 12 in size, two units of 10 archers, two trebuchets, three pegasi knights.
Life spells: 1, 2, 3, 6. Beast spells: signature, 3.

Turn 1
Ray: Move up IG and Ogres so Tim would need a 10-11 on die roll to charge. Trollguts cast on IG. WW cast on Ogres. LB's shoot and kill three KotR.

Tim: Magic 11-7 (Tim would dominate the magic phase in at least die rolls). Nothing of note had to use dispel scroll on Dweller's Below. Archers kill one ST. Archers kill one LB and put a wound on another. Both trebuchets miss.

Turn 2
Ray: Shift army sideways. IF on trollguts. Roll 10. Lose three levels off the SM, this would be huge event #1. Only spell remaining was toothcracker. LB kill two KotR.

Tim: Magic 12-7. Men at arms shuffle forward. Use hellheart. Roll a 1. Mages are 7" and 12" away. Nothing! Dwellers kills three IG's. Archers fail to wound anything. Trebuchet one misses. Trebuchet two misfires and cannot shoot. Pegasi Knights charge lone ST. Do one wound. ST does two. CR = 2 vs 2 and we draw. Huge event #2.

Turn 3
Ray: IG and Ogres charge men at arms. Tim flees but we catch him and run them down. He rolled low and I rolled an 11. This would be huge event #3. IG now to the side of the KotR the LB's have been blasting out of charge range, but set up to be flanked by his other unit of KotR. Get area version of toothcracker on IG and Ogres. LB kill two KotR, I think the unit was down to about six now.

Tim: WW on small KotR. Trebuchets put two wounds on ogres, I think one missed. Big KotR charge flank of IG. Small KotR charge LB's. Big unit wins combat by a few but we are stubborn and hold. Small unit killed only one. I hit nine times in return and wound...wait for it...ONCE! Huge event #4. We run and he chases us down. Which pretty much puts his KotR on my side of the table and my stuff on his side.

Turn 4
Ray: Ogres hit flank of big KotR. Kill unit. General flees but not off the board and we fail to catch him. Panic tests forced on archer and one trebuchet and both fail, fleeing off the table. Huge event #5.

Tim: Fails musician quick reform on small unit of KotR. Archers and trebuchet miss.

Turn 5
Ray: Kills general and combat reforms both units to face last unit of KotR which are far off.

Tim: Moves up. Trebuchet misfires and blows up.

Turn 6
Ray: Gets toothcracker on IG and sits back.

Tim: No charge gets off. Shoots some. End game.

VP game: I lost both ST's and the unit of LB's. Tim lost general, BSB, one caster, KotR, men at arms, archer unit, trebuchet.

Notes: This game was hilarious. We had so many huge events going on that any one of them could have altered the outcome of the game. We were laughing pretty much every turn from 2-4. After that it was a move around and watch Tim shoot me as our fighting units were on opposite sides of the table.

Game 3 - Dan, Ogre Kingdoms, Meeting Engagement - Ogre on Ogre love for the final table.

Special Rules: Reserves. Lead from the Front - General will automatically start on the board.

Terrain: Mysterious forest I would have to move through. Ended up being ordinary woods.

Set up: Dan's mournfang were in reserve and he set up IG - Ogres - Ironblaster - LB's on the line at the middle of the board. Daring me to set up directly across from him. I didn't. My LB's were in reserve. I set up everything on his LB side.

Dan had: level 4 SM, BSB, about the same number of IG and ogres as I did, I think five LB's, three mournfang, and a ironblaster.
LoGM spells: signature, 3, 5, 6.

Turn 1
I rolled a 6 and got to go first. Huge event #1.
This game I had signature, and spells 2, 5, and 6 (trying the maw vs ogres).

Ray: IG and Ogres charge LB's. Hold. I need a 9 and 10 to reach him and the IG's succeed, huge event #2. First 10+ roll for me in the tournament. IG crush LB and overrun outside of charge arcs.

Dan: Reforms IG and Ogres. Ironblaster moves away to shoot me. Gets off Maw with a mmiscast doing two wounds to his IG's. Maw scatters off target. Ironblaster fails to wound.

Turn 2
Ray: LB's move on. Reform IG to face him. Trollguts cast on IG's. I get Maw off on his ogres and kill three. LB's kill two and wound another of his ogres.

Dan: Mournafang move on about 18" away by his IG. Ogres charge ogres. I use dispel scroll on his casting of Maw. Ironblaster shoots IG. Wounds. Pass regeneration roll. Ineffective again.

Turn 3
Ray: IG and ST charge ironblaster. Trollguts cast on IG. LB's shoot IG's and do two wounds. Cannon flees it is caught. ST goes off table. IG just miss and are now sitting pretty to be flanked by his mournfang. Ogre vs ogre battle has him left with BSB only.

Dan: Mournfang charge IG in flank. IG's charge LB's. Rolls two dice to make lone BSB stubborn vs. my ogres. IF. Miscast kills his SM. Huge event #3. Mournfang get five impact hits, all fail to wound. Dan calls the game.

VP Game: I lost nothing. Dan lost SM, LB's, ogres, ironblaster. Turn 4 he would have lost BSB and mournfang.

Notes: Reserves screwed Dan (mournfang cannot charge on the turn they enter) and did nothing to me (LB's can move on and shoot). I stole the initiative. I rolled the big charge mowing down the LB's. Dan's dice which were hot earlier caught up with him against me.

League and tournament final record: 16-2.

Sunday, October 30: Game 4 - Travis - Dwarves - 2400 points - Battle of the Pass (#3)

Attempted Achievements:
#2. Going Large
#4. I'm In Charge!
#6. Look What We Can Do
#18. Hot! Hot!
#24. Win vs Dwarves
#42. What that Coming Over the Hill?
#43. Now You See Me
#94. Thinling Roast
#96. Halitosis

My list: Tyrant with GW, Armor of Silvered Steel, Talisman of Preservation, IronCurse Icon (317); Bruiser BSB with GW (176), CoC; Firebelly (level 1) with AHW, Rock Eye (127); Firebelly (level 1) with AHW (122); 9 Ironguts with FC, Standard of Swiftness (432); 11 Ironguts with FC (503); 3 Maneaters (Scout and Stubborn) with AHW, Standard of Discipline (171); 3 Maneaters (Vanguard and ItP) with GW (183); 4 Mournfang with HA, IF, Musician, DH Banner, Musician (340), 1 Sabretusk (21).  Total = 2,392.

His list: I don't know it all, but he had something like this: Lord, Some special guy with the Anvil of Doom, Thane BSB, Engineers with most of his WM's, 30 or so Warriors, 10 Giant Slayers, 10 Hammerers, 20 Thunderers, Ogrun Gun, Grudge Thrower, Bolt Thrower, Cannon (all four with multiple runes)

Terrain of note & Set up: Played length-wise so the terrain we had set up really didn't effect anything.  He deployed back in the middle of his deploymet zone so I didn't hit his lines till turn three.

IG+3 = unit with three characters
IG+1 = unit with lone FB

Turn 1
Ray: Scouts deployed in front of Thunderers.  Everything moves up.  Scout ME's move 1" from Thunderers hoping for the best.  Vanguard ME's move up within charge range of Giant Slayers.

Travis: Giant Slayers fail to charge.  Thunderers do five wounds to Scout ME's who pass their Ld test.  Whew.  GT kills one IG from unit with FB.  BT kills one ME from Vanguard unit.  Cannon does one wound to MF crusher.  OG missed or did nothing.  Anvil of Doom used to give Giant Slayers a second charge attempt which also failed.

Turn 2
Ray: Scout ME's charge Thunderers.  Win combat by 6.  Run them down and end up in-between cannon and OG.  Vanguard ME charge Giant Slayers.  2x Rune of Slowness prevents them from making it.  Everything else moves up for a big round three multi-charge round.

Travis: Giant Slayers flank charge Vanguard ME's and kill them all reforming to face IG unit with lone FB.  GT kills one IG from same unit.  BT into same unit for nothing.  OG into other unit with the three characters and fails to wound, thank you ironcurse icon.  Cannon kills MF crusher.  Anvil does wounds to IG+3 and MF with Ancient Wrath and Ruin.

Turn 3
Ray: IG+1 and ST (flank) charge Giant Slayers.  Kill them all.  IG+3 and MF (flank) charge warriors and kill them all.  Both FB's used breath weapons.  Forgot MF, but I do use it later.  No where close to killing five models with them.  Scout ME's reform to face OG.

Travis: Hammerers charge IG+3.  Tyrant challenges again and kills lord.  We win combat and run them down.  BT kills two IG from IG+1 unit.  GT kills one and wounds another in IG+1 unit.  OG kills the last two Scout ME's.  Cannon kills one and wounds another MF.  Anvil use Ancient power again.  Kills wounded MF, leaving only the Standard bearer and kills one IG from IG+1 unit.

<From here on out it is me going after WM's and getting blasted while at it.>

Turn 4
Ray: Lone MF charges Anvil.  Use breath weapon.  Kills the anvil guards.  Combat holds.  IG+3 charge BT.  Tyrant kills the engineer.  Crusher kills all but one crew.  Dwarves hold?  WM are not unbreakable are they?

Travis: GT kills three, OG kills another from IG+1 unit, which passes Ld test and we got another achievement!  Cannon kills last MF.

Turn 5
Ray: Reforms IG+3 into one long line and heads for cannon.  IG+1 heads toward GT.

Travis: Finishes off IG+1 with both WM's.

Turn 6
Ray: IG+3 charges cannon and overruns off table so we won't get shot by the GT.

Travis: Nothing to shoot.

End results:  Travis had his Grudge Thrower left (~165 points remaining, I think).  I had Tyrant, Brusier with BSB, Firebelly and four IG from their unit (1052 total remaining).

Got all attempted achievements except #94 Thinling Roast.  But added #5 Incoming! and #83 We're all there.

Game notes:  Long table deployment sucks against Dwarves.  First time using MF and ME's.  Both have lots of potential!  Can see them in most of my lists.  Didn't attempt a spell the whole game.  Could see trying the same two FB list but giving them Scroll and Hellheart for magic defense and see how it goes.

Good reports!  I'm kind of surprised that the Tyrant killed the Dwarf Lord.  Most of the time if Dwarves run a Lord, they make him unkillable.

New guy, still learning the rules.  I think he had a 2+ save, but most of that does away with S7 attacks.  I felt bad for him just a bit.

Ah, makes sense.  Barring  killing blow or ignoring armor saves, it takes something like 210 attacks (at S5 or more) to kill a typical Dwarf Lord Build.

That also explains why he took 10 hammerers (way too small).

Still, Dwarves are tough in any fight, so good job winning.

Thanks.  The length-wise table deployment gave him three rounds of pounding me before I could get into combat.  Then having to chase down his war machines at the game cost quite a few models in the lost department.  Casualties would have been much lower if we had played across the short side.

Some pictures...

1st - Slaughter Master

2nd - Butcher

3rd - Ogre

4th - BSB (still in progress)

None are final, but all are close.  Need to go over them all again and hit a few other details and then I'd like to say I'm going to tattoo them all, but that might be wishful thinking.

Lords & Core

All painted and based.  Two of the banners still need to be finished.

Tyrant is magnetized and can go between great weapon and two hand weapons.  Most of the standard bearers and musicians are magnetized so they can become basic trooper models as well.

This weekends work:

Mournfang ogres
Firebelly

Ogres are pretty much done, but I need to start on the Mournfang themselves.

Firebelly is still a work in progress.

Primed and waiting in the wings are the rest of the maneaters.

So all I have left to paint is the firebelly (in progress), the four mournfang cavalry themselves, and the three remaining maneaters.  Goal is to have them all finished by Christmas and get a full painted army picture up before the end of the year.

<Most likely I'll be getting rid of the Thundertusk so he doesn't count and I won't be picking up the Iron Blasters till everything else is painted.>  :)

I like your metals. And I like the basing material you use.
However, the rocks look a little fish-tanky, and not entirely in a good way. Before gluing down the rocks you might want to paint the base brown, so that when the viewer sees through the spaces between the rocks it looks like ground. Additionally, the rocks are very clean. Consider some washes of various dark colors, used in patches, to make the rocks more part of the mini.
If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

Thanks for the replies.

Metals = boltgun metal and a heavy dose of ogryn flesh wash.

Basing materials are just bigger flocking materials I found for use with model railroading.

I used some devlin mud on the rocks, but will hit them with something darker after I get the last few models painted.  I'll see if I can do something about the "see through" but it's probably a bit late to do anything about it now.

Tuesday, December 20: Game 5 - Mike - High Eves - 2500 points - Battle Line

I had: SM (level 4 - Heavens, Signature, #1, 4, 5) with Hellheart, Butcher (level 1 - Maw, #3) with Dispel Scroll, 12 units of 10 gnoblar trappers, 1 unit of 10 gnoblars, 3 units of 6 LB's (the flanking two units had bellowers), 4 ME's (ItP/Scout), Thudertusk, Iron Blaster

He had: Mage (level 4 - Life, 1, 2, 5, 6), Mage (level 1 - fire, signature), BSB, 2 units of 20 LSG, 13 archers, 12 SMoH, 40 Phoenix Guard, Chariot, Great Eagle, 2 RBT's.  Items I know he had, dispel scroll and banner that gives +1d3 power dice.

Terrain: Building and two sets of obstacles (18" each of wall) played a part in the middle of the battle field, everything else was not really an issue.

Set-up:  Nothing major, but the ME's did get to be placed behind and to the flank of the archers.

Break down of the game:
I win initiative without the +1

Turn 1
Ray: March all gnoblars forward.  FORGET to march ME's!  Magic phase nothing happens.  Shoot level 4 with IB, hit, wounds, makes 4+ ward.  Kill two LSG with TT template.  LB's to far back because of all the gnoblars to shoot.

Mike: Moved up and reformed his flank where the ME's were picking their noses.  Magic phase nothing happens.  Shot them with RBT, archers, and a unit of LSG killing one and leaving one with one wound left.  Other RBT puts three wounds on TT.

Turn 2
Ray: ME's fail to charge.  Everything else moves up.  Magic phase nothing happens.  LB's shoot.  We have a disagreement on LoS and cover, he thinks the gnoblars provide cover to his units and so does the wall he is not in contact with, still only applying one.  I don't argue about it, friendly game afterall, so I need 7's to hit, instead of 5's (1/3rd hitting goes to 1/12th).  LB's shooting kills 4 LSG.  IB is lined up to shoot down his reformed archers (could have hit 10), hits the first and doesn't bounce (MISFIRED TWICE).  Thundertusk misfires.  Harpoon his level 1 mage, wounds, no saves, inflict 1 wound only.  The only time the harpoon hit in the three turns.

Mike: Chariot charges gnoblar trappers - passed DT - kills 4, they flee, he doesn't pursue and reforms.  Magic phase nothing happens.  Archers finish off ME's.  RBT's miss.  LSG kill 2 gnoblars.

Turn 3:
Ray: Gnoblars rally from chariot.  Moves gnoblars around.  12-6 magic dice.  Level 4 casts extended range Urannon's Thunderboltt at his level 4 with IF/miscast.  Makes look out sir (assuming you can do that vs magic) and those loses a level.  Level 1 casts 12" toothcracker and gets IF/miscast.  Miscast does nothing (each took a hit, but neither was wounded).  IB hits an obstacle and blows it up.  TT misses. LB's shoot at things not behind cover (as I needed 7's even though they really wern't behind cover) and kill 4 PG and 4 SMoH.

Mike: PG, one unit of LSG, and Chariot charge different units of gnobalrs, chariot in flank so no traps.  Magic phase is again pretty uneventful, he gets a few SMoH back from regrowth and +2 T on PG.  Archers and both RBT's fail to wound the TT.  Chariot runs down one unit.  PG kill the other, but chariot is in the way to overrun.  LSG causes the other to flee, he does not purse again, not sure why not.

<Mike had to then call the game as he schedule another game.>

So he killed the ME's (200) and two units of gnoblar trappers (100) and had one unit of GT fleeing (50) = 350 VP's.  I got zero.

We did manage to kill 3+ models twice with the gnoblar trappers, once vs the PG (even with their ward save) and once against the LSG, so that was fun.

Hellheart never got used as he kept his mages between 21-24" away most of the time, did use the dispel scroll to make for one of the boring magic phases.

The two "warmachines" managed to inflict four wounds in three turns of shooting.

Lessons learned: Make sure you can articulate the rules correctly.  One of our local judges arrived on turn 3 of the game and I called him over to explain, but it was to late by this time as I had already gone so we just kept it the same for his turn.

All gnoblar core does throw off your opponent.  He didn't really know what to do and could have probably been in combat a turn earlier if he just came straight on (depending on charge rolls).  I can see a few units being useful.

So two weeks ago i had four mournfang, three maneaters, and a firebelly on the painting table to have the army competed.  Got work done Thursday, Friday, and some today.

My buddy Tim did the basecoat, inking, and first layer of drybrushing.  I finished the saddles and a second layer of drybrushing.

I present to you the completed mournfang.

Hopefully, will get two of the three if not all three MEs up tomorrow.

Great Gnoblog, cant wait to read more.
ogres are the boulder rolling down at you.  you can side step it, run away from it or blow it up before it gets to you... but you can never ignore it.
