Grumph's tribe
« on: Sep 01, 2011, 07:32:57 AM »
So just starting with Ogre Kingdoms, and this time I've decided not to buy an army on ebay or thru a painting service, so I'll be building it from scratch. For now I've ordered thru Wayland Games the following

  • Ogres Army book
  • Ogres Battalion
  • Magic Cards

Once I've read the book I'll buy a Tyrant and probably a butcher (if they are the magic casters).

I plan on using putty and bits to make all my models different. I've been looking for alternatives heads for ogres, but have failed to find anything using google. Can anyone recommend a miniature makers which I can use heads from to make a few of my ogres different ?

I can't think of anywhere that make heads that would fit in well with the other GW style heads.  Sorry.

To make sure all of my ogres have different heads (9 bulls, 5 IG and 4 LBs so far and not an identical head to be seen - and I've not used any of the ugly, obese bellower heads (except for my butcher conversion)!) I just modified the facial hair (plus a few additions/subtractions here and there - but mostly just the facial hair).  It's amazing how different you can make a bull head look by giving it a shave - or in many cases a partial shave (turning a full bearded bull into a moustache'd bull for example).

Butchers are indeed spellcasters. Good start there.

You will get a good variety of heads out of the Battalion and the other plastic sets. The Tyrant comes with two head options and so does the Butcher (or maybe even three, not sure). So you many not have to go elsewhere to find what you need. I wanted my Ogres to wear more armour than normal for example (see my Gnoblog, link in sig), so I used a lot more Irongut heads. Others have added hair, hats or beards with greenstuff to great effect.

If anyone sells separate Ogre heads I don't know about it.

Magic cards where out of stock, with some luck this will be shipped this week, so I can start modelling soon. Now I've started to think about expanding , but as I lack the Army book it's quite difficult. I was really wondering if getting the older version of the battalion box to expand the above list was a wise choice, or if I would be better with a second current battalion box and just a box of trappers to have some gnoblars on the table.

I've received the box and the book. Reading the book slowly. I've started building some of the models.

So far I have :
  • 4 headless leadbealchers , complete, greenstuffed for holes with one gnoblar
  • 3 headless Ironguts - missing additionnal details - but I'll get there

Now I'm wondering If I should make a bellower and a standard for the IG or do that when I expand my army to more than just the standard battalion set. Also wondering If I should get a box of ogres and a box of IG or if I should go for another Battalion set to expand my troops (don't know if fielding 8 LB is worth it - maybe I can sell/trade the extra LB somewhere).

If you are wondering why I've build them headless, it's for painting reasons. I'll paint them and then add the heads on them, and even maybe pin the heads (ain't sure for that if you guys have opinions shout them so I can decide if i should bother with that or not).

here are some pics of what I've been building  :

I need to add equipment to these. And on those model I had to miliput/greenstuff some of the hands.

And finaly I added a Butcher to the battalion box. It's just a pain to clean up. The resin as really a lot of bubbles and worse some crevasses that are hard to fill in. I will have to do a second round of greenstuffing that figure if I want to be able to do a decent job at painting it.

Ok everything is now built. I've puttied almost all the holes and that was a lot of work on the Butcher/slaugthermaster. Also I've discovered that having wet fingers while using putty made the putty a lot more usable. So Pro tip when using putty make sure to wet your hand/finger.

I've glues the 4 LB on their bases , but it doesn't look too good (holes below the feet and threads of glue), and I've primes the LB with Vallejo's grey spray paint (Ref 28011). Having the bases on while priming isn't really good . You can easily miss some areas :

As I haven't glued the bases on my other models - I think I will do that at a later stage.

I protected the head - with some tape in order to be able to glue them at a later stage , it looks like :

I also numbered each leadbelcher using a plastic paint under the base , and started a paint log. For now I've just painted 3 paints using 3 different colors (Vallejo AV and two Foundation paints). I'm learning how the pants are and I starting to wonder if adding all the bits now was a great idea (like the base) or if I should paint the models completely and then glue/cement the bits on top.

Everything is now built except for the BSB and a IG that fell when going to painting. I find it easier to paint for non fully assembled models - but I think that priming is best achieved with bases and complete figures, when my next batch of figures arrives I'll build them completely before starting to paint them.

I've slowly added colors on most of the models, and added my first head on the model I gave my girlfriend to paint - she's been having fun painting , so I'll probably build a few more models just for her to paint. And I'll buy some more brushes - detailed ones at least.

I have no progressed much on the skin because I'm waiting for a wash, the good news of the day is that the wash will come with my army extension.

The model I've painted the most is my Slaugther Master  and he looks like :

Once my models are finished I will post more pictures and complete paint logs.

So since my last update I made some progress :

I've found my paint scheme - for most of the models I'll use (blue pants, red and white bellie - nothing fancy, but decided for all of the to have deep blue eyes).

I've build and painted in dark blue 2 sabretust - I might add some purple/pinking zimbra on them but I'm not sure yet.
I've completed (or feel like I have ) My slaugthermaster :

My army looks mostly like this leadbelcher :

I like that paint scheme a lot. AS I said above  I've made my army have blue eyes and it looks like :

I've assembled 4 mournfangs and 4 riders. Primed and started painting the Mournfangs today. They'll be brown, except the one ridden by the boss , who will be grey :

And I've been slowly working on building my Ironblaster whose Rhinox is painted :

I'm not stisfied with the horns, but have yet to find a nice way to make horns.

That Rhinox looks great. To do with the previous Ogre Kingdoms Battalion, they give you alot of Gnoblars and not too many Ogres, which sucks, and why I never bought one, the current battalion is much better in my opinion. I like the way you've done a really neat job of the models in your displayed pictures.

I don't like the horns , I really need to find a way to make horns look better.

i bet if you hit those horns with an Agrax Earthshade (previously Devlan Mud) wash, they will look better.

I think I had done that already, but I'll try again for sure.

I had some time in the last few weeks to work on My army.

My IronBlaster is progressing nicely as can be seen on this picture :

My iron Guts now have skin, blue paints , boots and helmets. I need to work on the skin as it was my first airbrush work and it doesn't look there yet.

I started working on terrain to get the hand on airbrushing , it's just primed for now

I'm also working on Thundertusk/stonehorne, but very slowly as I'm cheap and want to magnetize the kit.

Got myself a nice firebelly last week for an upcoming tournament where I'll be allied with a WOC army 1600 pts total.

Got the figure last Friday. It's in good shape and I feel Like I can lay with it for now.

Took the picture with my tablet so colors aren't that great. Doing the skin was easy. The blue on the front needs rework. Still have to figure out what I want to do with the fire. Ain't sure I want to do source object lightning, but I might do it at some point.
