Ogre Raiding Force
« on: Apr 24, 2011, 07:44:32 PM »
Welcome to my gnoblog. With Warseer down I decided to stop lurking and sign up here. I'm working my way through my OK army. I've been playing with them for quite a while and this army has been a long time in construction phases but I'm getting there.

This was always intended as both a showcase and yet rock hard tournament army.

My Ironguts have been based off the new minotaurs to give them some real bulk. This turned out to be a horrendous job to "ogrefy" the bodies and I ended up basically sculpting everything but the arms and heads.

And the above all ranked up:

My slaughtermaster

BSB (in progress)

Tyrant (in progress)

And finally something actually painted:

More painted stuff to follow shortly.

Awesome work with the Green Stuff.  I really like how that belt came out on the butcher.

Hello and welcome to the Stronghold!

Thanks for jumping in with your Ogre army and sharing with us.

First impression of the mino body Ogres you've created was... "I dunno.." but the poses and the painted one have won me over. They look ready to smash and eat someone or something! Great work!

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, they're big lads, they actually do have quite a bit of fat added compared with the minos they were based on, it just doesn't look that chubby since they're so big.

Time for an update!

I've painted a couple more rank and file ironguts (below)

I'm a bit annoyed with how similar these guys look. I just didn't put that much thought into assembling these guys and it was an accident that they ended up with the same arm pose, torso and helmet. By the time I noticed I couldn't be bothered to cut them up again so these guys will just have to look like twins. It's not so bad in the unit (I just painted them together to do both furs at once.)

Since I've got a third of the unit painted, I decided to do a character model, my Slaughtermaster:

Incidentally, the bases were done quickly - I basecoated these guys quickly to get them 3-colours ready for a tournament and I'm now going back to paint the whole army properly. I'll come back and redo the bases eventually, when I get around to making a display base for them.

So the Ironguts are done, just about (still need to do the bases but I'm going to wait and do the whole army at once)

Next up, BSB I think.

Those look really awesome gutlord!  :D

I can imagine the pain of working with GS alot, I'm still hoping I'll manage what I'm going to do with my army.
I wasn't that impressed by the first looks, but dear lord they look nice now. Not a great fan of the slaughtermaster's back, but once again job well done, since it literally had me shivering in disgust.

So, any nice background story?

Looks great! Don't stop now... I want to see more of these burly Ogre beasts!!

Perhaps a tutorial for converting the mino body to an Ogre is in order?

Ha, I've got this cool background about how all the characters go in the Irongut unit with the Rune Maw  ;)

Naw, I don't really have much of a background story but in the long run I want to build a display board and build every unit around an ogre raiding force attacking a caravan. I want to make each unit a little mini-diorama, with either extra elements or via unit fillers. Long ways to go yet!

Well, the rest of my army is going to be "normal" ogre sized, I was only ever planning to make the Ironguts and heroes super-sized.

As for a tutorial, since these guys ended up being entirely greenstuff apart from the arms, weapons and heads, it'd end up being largely a greenstuff tutorial, but it's possible I suppose. I wasn't planning to make more until the new book comes out.

That said, I do have a thread I was working on when I started my Tyrant over on Warseer:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287129

And a bit more detail in the blog I started over there on the structure of the ironguts:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=296897

These are looking fandabbydozy, good work! :)
Heh, cheers. That's right, they're fandabbydozy 12-foot killing machines...  :D

Wowzer!  And I thought my Tyrant mino conversion was good, its average in comparison.  Excellent work, and great painting to boot.  Can't wait to see more.

It's been a while since I updated this blog. I've pretty much finished this army so I'll try to update with the rest of the army.

The most recent model I've been working on is a maneater I've made from scratch. I've cast this guy so I plan to make a whole unit of samurai as my maneaters (although many have commented that they might be better as leadbelchers).

And a quick and dirty paintjob (this is of a cast):

This blog has escaped me up until now.

The iron guts look fantastic. Really bulky and imposing as they should do. Fantastic sculpting on there too. Like the commitment for the samurai too, bet that was one heck of a job!

The only thing I'm not too sure about is your tyrant! It is of course only WIP so I will reserve judgement but the mouth looks a little off (plus surely he will look tiny next to your iron guts!? :)

It has occurred to me, but I don't have a vacuum chamber yet so I have more bubbles than finecast.

How much interest would there be if I did sell them?

It took a while!

I'll post a finished and painted picture. Although he's far from tiny! He's bigger than the iron guts. He's about twice the height of a normal GW bull.

Having had the opportunity to play against this army last weekend, I have to tell you:  It is one of the most awesomely modeled and painted armies out there.  Every model is converted just right to be interesting and full of character - and all models have a superb paint job.  The shooting ironblaster, the comet of Casandora token, the mournfang cavaly ... every aspect of the army is well done (so post lots of pictures and show them off!)

In a field of 68 competitors for Fantasy at Brawler Bash VI - this army won best painted.  It was well deserved.  (Gutlord Inquisitor also won best overall - also well deserved).

I really enjoyed our game, and I hope we get to play another at Southern Assault, next year's Brawler Bash, etc.
