Frost's Angry Fists- Update Rhinox Rider
« on: Apr 12, 2010, 07:43:08 PM »
Last month I was roped into fantasy by some friends I play 40k with.  I decided if I was going to play fantasy, I'd go with Ogres as the models are sweet, and as an army would not require as much painting  :P
I ended up decided to go with an angry fists army for the cool conversions possible with a blend of ogre and empire sensibilities.  I've been painting and modeling for about a month now, and am to the point where I can share some of the progress with this amazing community.
None of the models in the following pictures are "finished," and have lots of details to go.  My initial goal is to get the entire army painted to table top before I get in to the facial details, free hand tattoos, etc.
My thanks to totengraber for the skin recipe on his thread.

First up some Ogre Bulls.  They will eventually have free hands on the gutplates, and the faces/beards will be detailed.

Next up is the first standard bearer.

A representative Irongut.  I've got 7 painted to this standard.

Heres some examples of what i'm doing with the heads as simple conversions.

I took the pictures on the quick as I had to do it out front of my apartment, and I didn't want to "get caught."  Being a closet nerd is difficult at times.  So I apologize for the terrible lighting.  I'll take better pictures later.
Please let me know what y'all think.  I'm eager for all constructive criticism.

Ask and you shall receive.  Here are a couple ork pictures I have from when they were WIP.  They have long since been finished and based.  These were the first orks I ever painted, and they were converted up commandos.  The first pic is the first model I painted in my life that I was truly proud of.

His arm does normally attach flush.  just didnt for the picture.

A did a converted army of black ork biker nobs that those commandos were a part of.  A couple of the bikes WIP

Also have a flesh tearer army.

A peek at the WIP Tyrant.  He is a little small for my liking.  Left hand will be holding a laurel wreath from an empire kit to represent fistful of laurels.  Advice please.

Thinking of shaving off the top of the helmet slightly and adding an empire knightly helm topper.

Wow.  Great painting!  :)  I like the fistful of laurels idea too.

I'd bulk up his base somehow to show that he is a Tyrant (and bigger) and not just a regular old Ogre.

Made some minor progress on the tyrant with tenderizer and fistful of laurels last night.   Ignore the fact that the top of the fist is unfinished.  Does it look like he's actually holding the wreath properly?  My girl claims is does, but im not totally sold.

next up is a few of some pennants i blue tacked to the back banner.  I like the movement it adds, but worry that i'm making the model too busy, especially since I still have to add a few more bits to represent hvy armor.  thoughts?

another view of the pennant, and the feathers I added.

so... overall thoughts?  laurel look okay?  pennants?  pictures even good enough to tell?

Everything looks fine to me, but as Randroid said you need to put him on a rock or something to show he's a Tyrant, otherwise he looks like an epic IG. :P

A character model can NEVER be too busy!

Any ideas on elevating him w/o putting him on a rock or something.  I struggle with having static terrain pieces moving across the table, but im not sure what else is possible.

Looking for some feedback as to how the rhinox riders should wield their spears, or if they shouldn't at all.
Same model both times, just with different arms bluetacked.

or more vertical?

opinions?

i like the spear o the rhinox.. i would say have it more lowered, so it looks like they charging into a unit. ( maybe add some "splattered foes" to the base for detail.. maybe empire. heh.

so far i so love the painting keep it up man

like the conversions for the rhinox i would go same as groinbiter, the're hard core fighters so let them charge and let them look as mean as possible. if they where up i look like they where on gaurd or waiting

I'd like to have the spear below horizontal, however, i'm trying to figure out how to do that without having to green stuff a new arm.  Maybe if I cut the arm in half a the elbow... and then would only have to rebuild a little bit... that little bit would be fairly hidden.

I played with it a bit this weekend.  The arm cant be put into a realistic position with just adjusting at the elbow.  I would have to change the shoulder to have the arm go back a bit from there.  That is a bit beyond my ability with green stuff.   I can make it look like he is holding it low and relaxed, but not low and powerful.

Fair enough.  I'm the same way.  If I have to mess with the shoulder, I do something else!

I've got the fever to paint and model again, and have been working hard on my ogres.  I am working on a Reuben Kyte conversion.  Going to have him mounted on a rhinox from the scrappie kit to represent the extra wounds, toughness and strength.   I can't decide if I want him to be a BSB or Tyrant though.  I've ordered some of the bits, gonna base him on the empire general.  But what hes wielding will be determined by his role.  What do yall think?

Finally got around to finishing the rhinox rider started almost a year ago... I think.

Wanted to get y'alls opinions before I make a second one that looks like the first.  Thoughts?

Did a lot of work on the army over the last year without having taken the time to update the blog.  Will hopefully post some new pics over the next week or so.

Welcome back to the Stronghold.
This is a pretty nice ogre. If you make a second one like this, be happy, because this is good. It's nice and subtle, which is great.
If by RAW, you mean "Reg06's Audacious Whims", then you'd be right.

got the second one nearly finished.  just needs a little green stuff and maybe a few details.  Thought about adding empire knight-like plumes to the heads.... but they look damn stupid on empire knights and even more so on ogres after playing with it.  Also not sure if they should all have the masked, helmeted heads or not.  Kinda digging on the eyepatch head.

And here's a WIP of my BSB.  He's been about half painted like this for 8 months.  really need to get motivated to finish him.  It's just a giant beatstick in the shape of the Angry Fist.

What's that you used for the shield on the left rider? Part of a Steam Tank?

The Angry Fist beatstick looks fun :D

The shield on the right is a steam tank hatch.  The shield on the left is a wheel cover off a steam tank.  I guess I just realized that I never posted my stank scrap launchers.  Plenty of left over bits.  All kinds of great conversion options with the empire themed ogres.
