Massacred new beastmen
« on: Feb 05, 2010, 09:13:46 AM »
Just returned from my first game against the new beastmen. I was prepred to get massacred but somehow managed to massacre my opponents army.

(In retrospect, We forgot one important thing. That a gut magic spell ends when the caster is slain. That could have changed a few things.)

He had (roughly:

Beastlord with 1+ save and a bound spell that destroys arcane item and wounds their owners. also some armour that inflicted a S5 hit for every save.
2 Bray shamans. 3 Scrolls
Minotaur hero with axes of khorgor. (+1 attack and reroll?)

2 ranked units of gors
2 ranked units of ungors
2 skirmishing units of 5 ungors with bows
2 units of harpies
2 units of minotaurs (one with GW and one with add hand weapons)
1 Gorgon
1 Cygor

My list:

Tyrant
Tenderizer
Wyrdstone necklace
Brace of pistols
Luck gnoblar
Fistfull of laurels

Butcher
Halfling cookbook
Power stone

Butcher
Siegebreaker
Rock eye

Butcher
Dispel scroll
Bangstick

3 Bulls
Musician
Standard bearer

4 Bulls
Musician
Standard bearer
Lookout gnoblar
Additional hand weapon

3 Bulls
Musician

49 Gnoblar fighters
Groinbiter

49 Gnoblar fighters
Groinbiter

3 Ironguts
Musician
Standard bearer
Ragbanner
Lookout gnoblar

3 Leadbelchers
Musician

3 Leadbelchers
Musician

Scraplauncher

1 Rhinox rider
Bull Rhinox
Heavy armour
Warbanner
Standard bearer

He got first turn and advanced. He had a unit of scouting harpies that moved behind my line.  Magic did nothing exept forcing his units on the left flank to move D6+1 (He thought it was that units COULD move but they MUST move) He rolled a six and moved 7" towards me.

Tyrant, 3 Ironguts, a butcher charged his minotaurs with mino hero. The rhinox rider flanked the same unit. He had one wound left on a mino when combat was over and I ran him down. Leadbelchers shot a unit of warhounds into nothingness, panicking his ranked gors with both bray shamans. I moved into position with the rest of my units.

Turn 2.
He cursed... alot. Then his gorgon charged my leadbelchers who died and overran into my gnoblars who were also charged by his scouting harpies. gnoblars died and the gorgon now had like 9 attacks. (it gets one more attack for every combat i wins. The Cygor threw a stone a my butcher with rock eye (who stood on a hill looking at magic items within units) but missed.

On my right flank i shoot another unit of warhound with sharp stuff and bonecrushers. The scraplauncher shoot at a unit of ranked ungors and panicked them of the board.
On my left the tyrant and ironguts moved into position to charge the gorgon next turn.

Turn 3
He declared a charge with his harpies into my scraplauncher and if they made their feartest the Cygor could charge my bull (getting away from my tyrant and ironguts). Fortunatelly the harpies failed and the cygor was stuck. The beastlord and the remaining 2 warhounds charged my gnoblars who fled. The gorgon moved into position to charge my ironguts who were threatening the cygor.

I charged into the cygor killing it and overran into a unit of gors with my tyrant, the ironguts stuck behind him. The ironguts on the left right flank moved up to the minos and shoot at inflicting one wound on the minos and 3 on themselves. A unit of ironguts charged his lone beastlord who fled.

Turn 4.
The gorgon charged the ironguts, but thanks to trollguts they held. The tyrant won the combat agaisnt the gors but they held.

Turn 5
The gorgon wiped the ironguts and overran into the tyrant. The tyrant held thanks to trollguts (which he should have lost when the butcher casting it died, but we both forgot). The tyrant killed the gorgon and the gors ran, my tyrant after them.
The minos charged the leadbelchers who fled.

The tyrant and 3 ironguts charged the minos wiping them out.

End of game!

somhow i don't think not having your little brainburp regarding magic would have changed anything

he was pretty much screwed by the start of turn 3 :P

excellently played 8) nice to know the new beasties aren't overpowered
a lot of people don't know this but GW started a long time ago, but they were know then as Gestapo Wardens.  after a while they eased their way into the gaming community due to the changing times.... but some upper executives still abide by the old ways and occasionally when some player gets really out of line with the house rules, GW shows up and they get black bagged and taken away.  this is all just rumor and speculation of course... but i would be careful what you say about the terrain rules

Its not an optimised Beast least.  No large numbers of chariots,  ranked Gors, and only two Bray shamen.?  Its either all, ie Lvl 4 and two lvl II's  or scroll caddy to get the best.

Whereas you were using an optomised list.

However, a win is a win.

I personally think this book is weaker than our book.??

With ogres, a win is a win.
But...

When you are a good player, knowing how to win with your army, then a new army is nice to play against.
I massacred a lizardmen army once.
That doesn't mean, that they are sub-ogres, are they?

Lexy;  My comment about the new Beasts being weaker than Ogres is based on reading the new Beastmen book for the last three days, having played Ogres for the last five years, and the comments of numerous Beastmen players on the  Herdstone forum.

It remains to be seen what the final verdict will be.

Well... I just played 2 2250 games today against the new beasts and was massacre twice.  The jabberwocky and the doombull was brutal.  I'm an experienced player and I do amazingly well with ogres considering their disadvantages.

I still don't think they are OP.

To me, the key is to use the minotaurs frenzy to bait, flee and flankcharge them.

Also the Brahmir statue + skull mask in the same unit could be brutal when casting braingobbler....

Brahmir Statue does nothing to Beastmen as they are no longer "Chaos".

Keep in mind that you must make the fear test immediately to declare such a charge, so the cygor was actually free to move and shoot or whatever, as he could not declare until after the results of the fear test were known (assuming the harpies were declared first, no reason not to).

The thing that will hurt us against beastmen is primal fury and as usual chariots (faster movement that can inflicts lots of wounds.)

Minotaurs aren't as good as they seem because they get no armour and cost more than ironguts. The minotaur heroes on the other hand (doombull, hero minotaur and gorgon) will be tough as nails unless you get the charge with a tenderizer or maneaters...

The cygor is pretty hardcore when he get 3 hits on a squad (can kill all models in a 3 men squad)

But primal fury... with ambushing gors... it's brutal let me tell you... even with just a 10 men squad.

More on the report:  Good battle report and nice win!

I disagree - Minos with LA and Shield have a better AS than Ironguts and can hit even harder. Yes they are slightly more expensive but I wouldn't say they aren't "good". Just more situational which is a given as they are Special choices.

sandpeople -- glad to hear you had a win against the new beast book. First, it's always great when an Ogre player wins.

Second, it sounds like the Beastmen are not a point-and-shoot army. Even with the new beastie abilities that have been discussed, it's not an autowin for the beasts.

For me, that bodes well. I prefer to play and play against armies that require a bit more tacitical play. In fact I've been putting off Empire purchases lately...

wait, what?
..... will you look at that, no "of Chaos" on the front of the book.  so no mention of the chaos gods anymore or what in fact they have been doing with themselves for the last 20 years; like we just forgot they were Ungor's with shrines to Khorne on sticks last year and this year they're pure as the driven snow?

is there some kind of fluff for this explanation at least, even a little?
I'm not the Slaughterman,

There is some stuff in the book about it. Basically they often align themselves with Chaos because of their hatred of civilization/humanity.

I don't get the same feeling when I read the Beastmen book.

To me these are the true being of chaos, and even the two beastmen players in our club acknowledge that.

And that the statue works.

They definitely honour Chaos and the Dark gods, it is just in their pure original form and not split or formally pledged to one god like the warriors are.

Well whatever you want to do ... the statue is a dumb item anyway. If you need to construct your list with items like that to win you've already lost if you ask me.

Well since the item only works on chaos armies and skaven, and there are some other items that are better, who will use it always?

That would be like when the Ogres was released, everyone knew the Tyrant had the Tenderizer.

That is stupid, not the item.

I just think that generally the "good against army X" items are a bit dumb.
