The Butcher's Cauldron / Re: should i green stuff mournafngs?

Well how smooth does it go?

I use both GS and LGS and it is gets much smoother than traditional GS.

Sure I can get the same result by both methods, but GS take so much longer to get the same result.

Again for me water has been the key.

Thanks for that advice ill have to try it.

The Butcher's Cauldron / should i green stuff mournafngs?
« on: Jul 26, 2012, 08:10:09 AM »
Just put my 4 mournfangs together the other day and now i am thinking about painting one.  Theres a small gap between the two halfs of the face and some of the body, was curious if most people green stuff this or just prime and paint over it.  The gap is small but im worried it will show.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  : )

Thinling Realms / Re: Resin? What is wrong with GW's?!

So far i have purchased a finecast: butcher, sabertusks, araby maneater, paymaster maneater.
I have to say the butcher was and still is in really bad shape, i have spent many hours cleaning this model up and it still needs several hours of work im very frustrated with this one...supposed to be my general too.
Sabertusks were fine took a little bit of work to fix up but not to bad.
Maneaters are ok but could be better...a skull broke off the araby maneater when i barely touched it that would have never happened with metal, i did glue it back on and it looks ok.
All in all i do like how easy it is to work with finecast, but i hate that i still havent seen one finecast model that doesnt need hours of green stuffing and scraping.  I do feel that we are being forced to buy a defective product and i have been looking for the old metal models, the only place ive found them is on ebay and i dont have paypal and dont really want it so im stuck buying finecast.
I really dont get why they dont make everything from plastic.  Also noticed that the greenskins GW just released are made from some sort of black plastic, and they look great, maybe they will switch to that for all the finecast models...at least one can hope.

I can't believe I have missed this gnoblog before now... Your work is fantastic! The colours are bold and strong, yet contain subtle highlights and depth. I very much like your gnoblar skintone too! Have a pet gnoblar on me :)

JJ

Hey thanks a bunch!!!  That's my first gnobblar!  Super excited!
Working on next IG, will post pics when done.  Also just acquired 2 maneaters, the araby and the paymaster.  I cant wait to get to work on them but will hold off until i have my IGs finished, need to get the core built so i can play some games.  Thanks for looking fellow ogres.

Here's my second IG.

8
oops heres the other side...

Its not looking like iam going to make my pledge this month but heres the first of the three IGs.  Ended up using that shoulder shield as a gutstrap because with that combination of great weapon and arms none of the gutstraps would fit...i had already glued the arms and weapon on before i realized that was the case.  Thanks for looking.

10
Those look really cool warlordsteve.  Very action packed looking mournafangs and your rhinos are sweet as always.

11
tried to give ya a gnobblar not  sure if it worked.  Because thats an awsome way todo bone looking stuff...and i plan on using that in the near future.  I mean cmon looks just like real bone bows...hard to beat just imho.  Thanks a bunch Shadowlord.

12
..yea im curious how your doing that bone on the bows as well shadowlord?  looks very natural.  Some kind of wash on bleached bone or zandri dust ?  Sorry just a couple of guesses.

Thanks Shadowlord, and thanks for the advice on how to paint the kitties.  I will try that method on the next one i do, still havent had time to add the stripes to the first one, but will post pics once i get it done.  Ive been looking at the pics of the greenskins that you have been painting and they look absolutely amazing, gives me inspiration.

I really like the highlights on the ogres skin looks really good.  I have been trying to do some highlights and havent had much luck making em look realistic.  I like your butcher alot too, cool conversion.

For my pledge this month i will play it safe since i failed last month: 3 IGs but not the bases, still not sure what i wanna do as far as basing goes.
I may end up getting more done but that remains to be seen.  Heres a pic of the 5 primed/basecoated IGs i will choose 3 from these guys.  Also heres  pics of the IG i just finished that was from my last months pledge that i didn't get done in time.  Thanks for looking.

Here's the newest addition to my tribe, my 1st IG.  Im pretty happy with the way he turned out, was my 1st attempt at rust (its on the handle of the great wep.).  I think i went a little overboard on the rust but it was a learning experience.  I painted him with the weapon and arms glued on but the head and gutstrap off and then glued them on after i was done with the whole paint job.  I was dreading painting around the great weapon but it really wasnt that hard actually cut some time off the layering on the skin, but made up in time painting on the metal armor on the arms, so took about as long as a regular bull would have.  I need to start practicing layering on the pants and boots more, every time ive tried it it never looks good and i just wash over it, but thats the next step i feel like.  Any advice on how my painting can be better is always welcome.  Thank you for looking guys.

I failed as well, almost done with the IG that was the last part of my pledge, just doing detail work on him now.  Should be done in the next day or two.  Hopefully July will be a less busy work month for me and i can paint more models.

GnR?

ooh, then you might like my upcoming bull standard bearer... a certain fellow with curly hair and a fondness for top hats!

OMG!!! Yes!  I cant wait to see him!!!

Dry brush paint = regular paint dried out. It's a rip-off. Don't buy more of it would be my advice.

Not a rip off in the least. Instead of wasting paint on your paper towel, the dry paint is MUCH more efficient. I can't see myself ever running out of the 1 pot I have. The only thing I don't like about the 1 pot I have is that it's brighter than I would like.

Im gonna have to agree with dirtycrabcakes its not a waste and will last forever as he said.

I absolutely LOVE your ogres!!!  I love all those bands...and the music and these ogres are just awsome!  Ozzy is still the man even though hes completely out of it lol.  How bout some judas priest ogres?  Or maybe GnR their American but are some of the best imo!!!  Ooh Yngwie Malmsteen!  Lol i  could go on and on!  Great work keep on ROCKIN!

21
Yea its DRY paint, use a drybrush get some on there then work it into your brush on a pallete of some sort, basically make sure its in the brush but not to much at all, i usualy wipe most of the paint off on a paper towel and then brush it against the texture of the hair or fur or w/e you are trying to drybrush it on.  Do not add water to it, it will turn in to a huge mess and be really streaky make sure your brush is actually dry and has zero moisture on it.  Also i usualy drybrush after the basecoat and not after ive done any layering or even washing cause its a messy process and that way i can just touch up all the spots where its not supposed to be after with the basecoat and then move on to washing or layering depending on the model.  You can actually drybrush with any color imo not just the dry, using this same process, well any color besides the washes lol.  Hope that helps.

now that i saw pictures of your sabretusk, your skin looks extremely clean and less yellow than mine.  i believe i used Iyanden darksun for skin tone and a vallejo ghost gray for the hair... i am liking yours more though.. :(

The camera may be covering up many of the imperfections of mine, i based the whole think in xv88(besides the bones teeth claws), then washed the skin with agrax earthshade, besides the hair wich i used seraphim sepia for, then layered on balor brown and then zamesi desert on skin, and i drybrushed the hair with terminatus stone i believe.  Still havent had time to paint on the stripes or any other painting cause of work sched, feeling like i may not finish my IG for the pledge but gonna try and rip threw it at end of month lol.

Wooot!  Almost done with my pledge.

Maneater musician

Sabretusks

Irongut Standard Bearer

WIP of my converted Ironblaster

Bonus of 20 gnoblars!

Should be able to finish that ironblaster by tonight!

hey awsome your sabertusk looks like hes almost the same colour as the one i did other night( i was going for the colour of a lion but he just looks kinda really yellow lol) , heres some pics hes not apart of my pledge but i got them the other day and couldnt resist but paint one, not to stoked with the way hes turned out.  have got some great advice to paint stripes and loose the attempt at detail wich seems like the way to go with these guys, anyways any chance i could see a pic of the side of yours to compare to mine...

Yours look good shadowlord, i saw them on the painting challenge too, i like the way they turned out.  Did you just base coat and wash and then add stripes?  Or did you layer over the wash and then add stripes?  I tried to layer mine and looks like i didnt do anything lol.  Btw the hunter looks awsome!
