The Feeding Grounds / Re: Trouble writing lists =(

"8 bulls or 6 guts really = 30 halberds or 30 orc boys"

Does 1 Ogre match 5 Dark Elves, or 3 witch elves - hell no. That's part of the appeal with them though.

sita is right on with the core force he speaks of.

Totally agree with another unit, and pitfighters or something along those lines would have been great - differentiation? Who gives a toss, you can't tell me savage orcs are like 'a totally different unit man'... Or Executioners and and Black Guard for the Dark Elves, the list goes on. Slight differentiation has never bothered GW in the past (HELLO Spac' Marines). It's a modelling hobby first and foremost as everyone likes to point out.

The magic items nerfed into oblivion mostly, big names are mostly there but nothing special and mostly overpriced when looking at core items from the rulebook especially.

Gnoblars were awesome lore... To replace gnoblars with the various big animals and weapons is a decent trade-off, but I'm so ols school I remember when Fimir were in the game, and to think they may just let another cool little race they've constructed go by the wayside is a disappointment.

The well trodden recent path of  the 'big monsters' is tiresome anyway, it didn't need to be the flag ship for OK like the Arachnarok or TK big beasties for those army lists.

Other than that love all the new models, love the points reduction and new found power of stuff like Maneaters and Yhetees.

Lots of good arguments against, so there's some worth considering on the GW side of the fence.

MF's are only I2 anyway, so it's not like you're losing that bad on ASL.

Bulls have a disturbing habit of bouncing off Heavy Knights, so to not kit out my most expensive unit for maximum impact seems unwise. If you aren't using MFs to smash into either your opponents Heavy Cav or creatures, you're probably doing it wrong.

It used to be ok with the 1 point of armor pen, but since the change to ogre clubs a single point deduction from 4S to opponent saves doesn't cut the mustard. Expecting to pull off a +1S cast on one of the most powerful cavalry units in the game is probably also unwise. You will very rarely fight a heavy Cav unit with less than 4WS either, which is worth considering.

Not quite worth it with the T4 as pointed out. They got munched in the WD battle report.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Ogre 'Rumour Roundup' - summary on page 1

As a long time lurker now is about the best time to post something.

It seems fair to only judge what is not just a rumor, although the points cost seem to be realistic. Personally, what can be seen I think is disappointing in terms of receiving the obligatory 'big creatures'. Ogres for me have always been about a big bunch of... Ogres. Small packs, large packs, but Ogres all the same (the fluff pic of the Ogres attacking the caravan in the first book is perfect). I think a hunter or Tyrant mount is appropriate as the fluff in the first army book has pictures of such creatures, so I expected that. What I was also expecting though was more infantry variation. I know people like the big stuff, and I enjoy painting it, but I would have liked to see Ogres stay as a mainly infantry army. Sabretusk packs is a bit m'eh, along with the new catlike riding mounts, which I think we can all agree get a giant WTF.

I'm hoping for the Ogre characters to add even more specialization akin to what Skrag and Greasus offer. Defininitely something for Maneaters. That should be a given.

Would have loved to have seen Ogre gladiators or 'pit fighters'. More armour, maybe d3 damage on large targets, something very Ogreish but able to take on the big beasties. Ironguts and maneaters have their place, but compared to the variation seen in most army lists there isn't anything that special in terms of infantry choices.

The main joy out of all of this for me is finally going back to proper human skin tone. That awful grey nastyness was such a disappointment. I don't care if it gave them a point of differentiation, Ogryns and Blood Bowl Ogres (Morg ftw!) were always part of the overall ogre picture that made GW Ogres the best and going back to standardized skin is a thank god moment.
