Win your ticket to Vegas!

I am in the background scene of http://Novaopen.com - we just announced the website last night I am spreading the word.

I'm going to be running the Fantasy Tournament!  (I take bribes and donations! >=)

I would love to see some Ogre's represented (especially some Rhinox Riders!), and who knows - we may have a new book by then!

Location: Dulles EXPO Center
Date: August 14, 2010
Time: Check-in begins at 7:30am
Cost: $50

Check out the website at http://novaopen.com/ - it is still my work in progress.  If anyone would like their mini featured on the main page, ping me!  I'm much more partial to Ogres than anything else =)

My list:

Bruiser, exhw, greatskull, laurels (skull may be dropable for ragbanner on rhinox)
Butcher, Hellheart - I'd like to throw in 2 tooth, but just no points

3x Bulls - Banner (both heroes go here)
20x Gnoblar - table quarter holder

3x Rhinox Riders, 2 bulls, HA, Ironfirst (2+ in combat)  I've noticed that in 1k, without many elite units, the WS4 makes a HUGE difference with hitting on 3-4.

Teammate list - as of now.

Daemons - roughly

Herald of Khorne - Jugg
2x 10 Horror, banner +1 cast, Musician
5 Flesh hounds (Herald here)
5 Flesh hounds
5 Flamers

honestly, I've been playing WH for about 6 years now.  First crack at ogres was in a league format.  I would consider all the players to be at average, with some being very good.  I consider myself in the middle of the league.  Better than average, but not the top.

Anyway, I have had the BEST time (i'm 2/4) using the following:

15 Bulls.  Butcher with Skull mantle, tyrant with weapon combo of choice, BSB + warbanner.  This block is MASSIVE on the table.  CR generated before combat is 2 from ranks (if you bump up a few more bulls you can get 3), +1 banner, +1 BSB, +1 war banner, +1 size.  Thats a +6-7 static CR, BEFORE FIGHTING.  Get charged, great, go ahead, cause 3 wounds on t4 (assuming no spells are on them) to prevent regular rank + file attacks.  Tyrant, butcher, bsb all get to go.  So does your champion.  Basically your front line can take a HUGE hit, and you still get a considerable amount of attacks back.  Don't forget they're at -1 to charge you.  Nothing is funnier than to see a double/triple charge, to have 1 of them not make the test.  Because your opponent then knows he's hosed.

To be doubly mean, put long stride on the tyrant so you can pursue 3d6.

Next, RHINOX RIDERS.  These guys are insane.  no matter WHAT army, they all dread the rhinox riders.  I've trid combos of (i call non-bulls babies).  baby/bull/baby, baby/baby, bull/bull/baby, but my best luck is bull/bull.  If you add +1 str to these guys?  holy lord that can be 6 str 7 hits.

Next, MAN EATERS.  I haven't used them much until my last 2 games.  They're a pit.  Thats all I have them for.  Protect my flank and have BoH.  Extra attack, shooting that hits on a 4+, its just solid ownage.  They'll tear through fast cav and infantry.  worse thing for them in heavy cav, but they can still take the charge, and my general/bsb are always within 12" so I get a reroll on their stubborn.

Against chaos I went super cheese.  Put Statue and BoH on my tyrant, skull/bangstick on a butcher and put them into a unit of 5 maneaters with BoH.  Knocked off TWO units of chaos nights in 1 turn.  Some luck, but it was hilarious.  He had them in packs of 5.  all shots + bang stick into one unit.  Killed off two, minus 4 for panic check.  rolled an 11.  rolled a 13, off the table.  next was bone cruncher, killed 2.  they rolled a 8, but with the modifer, gg.

Anyway, learn the aspects of the game.  you don't need to wipe a unit out, you need to panic it.  25% is NOT hard to come by, and with an auto-panic check from magic is even easier.  I'm ALWAYS taking the skull mantle with me, and that butcher will join any shooty unit.

My army generally consists of the big bull block, either 2 sets of 2 rhinox bulls, or 1 set and a 4-5 eaters.

1 3/champ iron gut unit and a block of gnobbers.  I'll place all units into the best suited quarter, then the gnobs are the exact opposite - simply to claim a quarter, or force a more expensive unit to chase after them.

Remember, on a hill, in a 10x2 formation, they get FORTY shots.  You're bound to get 6's.

My girlfriend also got me some scrap launchers.  I have about 5k points in Ogres (at least), about 3k painted, but not a single scrap launcher.  So I got 2, just to be able to harass a bit more.

Hunters were not worth it for me.  They spent almost an entire game shooting a dragon, finally downed him on turn 4.  Not worth giving up the magic for them.

« on: Nov 24, 2008, 09:51:19 PM »
My unit can't shoot 90 shots, have ninja stars, have 5 characters in the front line and can be flanked.

Basically the DE list allows more 'heroes' than that.  How do you fight cheese? with cheese.

Our league is not very magic heavy what so ever.  I have yet to play a magic army.  Max I've seen 2 level 2 wizards.  only rolling 2 dice gives then roughly 50% chance to dispel, 3 more so etc.  But they dont bring their casters in order to dispel my RiP's for the most part.  The empire tried to dispel my stubborn, but failed, and he already used 2 other dice to make a unit if knights unbreakable (talk about OP)

A dragon into the flank?  How is it going to flank?  I have a unit of man eaters and bull rhinox, the base cannot fit, therefore it cannot do a legal charge.  A rear charge might hurt on the other hand.

If I wanted to go Ultra Cheesy, I'd run 2 units of 3 bull rhinox, maybe even throw in a longstrider tyrant.

This is a points denial army, go ahead and do 15 wounds on the unit, still wont be below 1/2 strength.  I would gladly accept a frontal charge with that unit.  Its funny to see your opponents face drop when you go "yeah... killing blow doesn't work on ogres..."

« on: Nov 21, 2008, 11:28:17 PM »
Rhinox took a charge from a prince on a star dragon.  Rhinox won.

That unit with +6 CR can withstand a charge pretty easilly.

I lost this game, but that unit with stubborn withstood a full charge from a steam tank, flaggalents (whatever the crazy unbreakable guys are for empire) and 2 units of knights.

Killed the tank (with the help of a rhinox rider charge on on the 3rd round of combat), killed all the flaggalents, broke both unit of knights instantly since I was bigger with fear.

I ran down the more expensive unit of knights.  He won, but it was close - probably a minor victory or maybe even a  tie.

Problem with my league is that we suffer -1 LD if all the models aren't painted.  Mine aren't all painted =(

I won't play the cheesy as deathstar guy again unless its in a league match - in which case I'm going to probably bring 4 scrap launchers.

One thing I've read against that army is to try and get multiple charges off.  If i charge with 3 bulls, he has to line up to those bulls, then I charge from the flank, his characters won't be there.

Armies of the Kingdoms / My 'league' list. - 1496 point unit.
« on: Nov 21, 2008, 06:40:08 PM »
Won my first league with this list - going to keep it as is.

2400 Pts

1 Tyrant
General; Great Weapon; Ogre Club; Heavy Armour
     Deathcheater
     Gut Maw
     Fistful of Laurels
     Wyrdstone Necklace

Butcher
     Dispel Scroll
     Bangstick

Butcher
     Halfing Cookbook
     Dispel Scroll

Bruiser
Ogre Club; Heavy Armour; Battle Standard
     War Banner

3 Ogre Bulls

13 Ogre Bulls
     2ndWeapon; Full Command

20 Gnoblars

2 Bull Rhinox Riders - HA - Ragbanner

5 Maneater HA - Brace

Casting Pool: 6

Dispel Pool: 4

Models in Army: 47

Total Army Cost: 2401

Depending on who I'm against - obviously I would have ot use cover etc.

Bigass block of bulls with the tyrant, butcher with cookbook and BSB in the unit.  This static unit has +2 rank, +1 size +3 banner/warbanner/bsb - +6 before I even start to fight.  If charged - I have a Champion, Tyrant, Bruiser, Butcher and Bull in the front line - all getting attacks back unless killed (usually the bull will die).  This is why I'm debating on dropping the extra hand weapons - however it helps against a flank charge.  Obviously I'll be stubborn on the unit.

Rhinox riders deployed to whatever flank he has the most calvary - if no calvary, whatever flank has the most shooting.

Maneaters on the other flank - Probably on the side i feel most vulnerable - because within general and bsb range - they shouldn't break  unless wiped.  Shooting whatever they can.

Gnoblars opposite table quarter to claim VP - he'll have to send greater than 40 points after them, which will take care of that unit (unless flying) for 4 turns.  But I've had good luck in 10 front with sharpstuff.

I'd really like to work 2 scrap launcher into this - I'm a good guesser with them it would force him to come forward - especially if they have any rank/file units.

What do you guys think?

My next army will consist of 15 bull block, bsb, butcher.

Man eater/tyrant block for a flank, rhinox for the other flank.

gnobs for a table quarter and IG with a butcher to support whatever side needs it most.

15 ogre block worked like a charm.  Had stubborn on them...

took a hit from a steam tank.  Wasn't able to cause 10 wounds though.

Next turn he got in his flaggenants or whatever the other unbreakables are.  Still held.

Was able to wipe them out down to 1 man due to a challenge in 2nd round, rhinox had charged the steam tank - killed it.

Knights of something or other charged unit (had 7 left, plus bsb/tyrant/butcher).  Broke them, chased to neared edge (2" short of catching).

Charged next turn, unit was forced off the table (i went off because I was lined up with a cannon).

I ended up losing the game, but I 100% confident the unit got its money paid for.  It was a grudge match... his general had to charge me on a hypogryph - killed my trant and gave him an additional 250vps.  He caused 3 wounds that round, I had 3, all saves/wards failed.

I think if I would have smacked his general around I would have either been a very close draw, possibly with me winning because I had 2 table quarters.

^^^ I agree whole heartedly.

Almost every list I've seen is 80% the same.  Granted, our limited units dont allow us much of a choice.

However, using these units differently I think can be very effective.  I'm going to be running blocks of 15 bulls with hand weapons,a bsb/warbanner and butcher.  I have a static +5 cr right off the bat  They have to cause 6 wounds in order for me to lose 2 models attacks.  Even if they cause 6-8 wounds I'm still going to be getting 8 str 4 and 4 str 8 attacks.

I would really like to see some non cookie-cutter lists tried out, but people are too hellbent on always winning.

my shooty list looks very similar.  Although I'm not allowed to take DoW in the league, so I have Man Eaters with hand guns.

I do like the maw seekers on the hunter though.  I know I'm going against 2 dragons, so I think I'm going to go beastkiller

the fact that they DONT accept the challenge is good as well.

You eliminate their champion/hero from attacking.  its really a win/win either way.

Have an opponent going to be using 2 dragons...

So I'm taking 2 hunters, hopefully cause a few wounds before he can charge me.

Anyway, how does beastkiller affect the hunter?  Will his harpoon be considered a 'mundane' weapon?

Ok, I need the aboslute most cheese you can come up with for 2500 points.

Yes, I read through that.  Many lists are no ogres - but thank you for your input.

Its a butcher AND a bsb in 1 group, butcher and tyrant in the other.

[/quote]Is that a butcher OR BSB? Because if it isn't, you have a problem :) Butchers can't be BSB's... But, I'm fairly certain you already know this :)

Anyone have any luck running big blocks?

15 Bulls, BSB/Butcher with 2x thiefstone and skull mantle

15 bulls, Tyrant, great skull, tenderizer, mawseeker (possibly).  Butcher with 2x scrolls.

1x 20 gnobs

1x 3 riders, 1 bull

Not counting the gnoblars, i'll have 3 units on the table.

i have no choice but to play him - it was my league match up.

So i'm just going to play the most over powered list I can come up with.  Unfortunately, no special characters

Ok, I need the aboslute most cheese you can come up with for 2500 points.

yesterday I went against a DE player (league) that had like 161 shots per turn, a unit of 35 shades.  He had 2 other units, took the assassins out from those units and put them in with the shades.  Had a dreadlord and a BSB as a part of the shades as well.

So if you charge with a 5 front, you get 3 assassins, BSB and dread lord to deal with, most likely the assassins with 'always strike first' special rule.

Its army concepts like these that turn me off to this game in its entirety.

Anyway, If only I had a scrap launcher, would have done a number on that unit - he had them all clustered up right in the center of the table with dark riders and harpies march blocking/charge deny etc.

So, playing this guy basically made me feel that there is no army too cheesy.  I feel like running a list like this:

Ironskin Tribe

Bruiser - General
Butcher - Scroll x2

Core: 3x 2xLeadbelchers

Special

4x  3xRhinox Rhiders, 1 Bull, w/ HA

Rare

2 Slave giants

it can.

haha, that sucks for them, considering i have 3 chances to give MR2 before i have to roll higher than a 4 (+1 to cast because of casket)

Rules Questions and FAQs / Dispelling Casket of Souls?
« on: Oct 11, 2008, 03:42:54 PM »
How would dispelling the casket of souls work?

If units have Magic Resistance at different levels?  Say I have 1 unit with 3 thiefstones, giving them MR3, and 2 other units have troll guts giving them MR2.

I would assume I would get to dispel the casket with MR3.  However, if that unit is not in LOS, is it still able to be dispelled due to it not affecting them?  In what order can it be dispelled if different units are effected?

22
Interesting Idea, what if I just had troll guts activated on more than 1 unit?

How doe sthe casket dispel work?  say I have troll guts on 2 units and 3 thiefstones on another...  would I just get 3 additional dice to dispel?

Just having troll guts up would be immense, I'm already sporting 5 dispel dice, with +1.  So I feel confident I'm going to dispel at least 3 spells, then have the scrolls for casket if necessary.

23
Are you rebasing the Hunters? Their base size is bigger than the standard 40mm OK one.

ah yeah you're right, so they can line up with tusks.  I'll need to see what i can do about proxying 2 more butchers

I'm currently out of town... and before this league started, my army was still in boxes!

I wont have time to get gnoblars up, and I'm going to have to use 2 hunter proxies for butchers - arrghh.

Here is my new list - keep in mind I can't bring gnoblars.  I did a lot of reading and it looks like trappers are useless due to the casket, and I dont need to march block considering that TK can't march.

2500 OK vs TK - league

Tyrant
     General Heavy Armour
     Tenderiser
     Kineater

Tooth gnoblars enough to counteract the casket for the first 2 turns, hopefully be able to get a gorger into the casket and one into the catapult by then.

Butcher
     Tooth Gnoblar x2
Staff of Sorcery - they cast a ton of spells with 1 or 2 dice...

Butcher
     Tooth Gnoblar x2
Halfing Cookbook - He'll be my second caster (assuming the first butchers are dispelled)
     Dispel Scroll

Butcher
     Tooth Gnoblar
     Bangstick
     Dispel Scroll

3 Ogre Bulls - Bait/screen/flank charge absorb
     2ndWeapon

3 Ogre Bulls - Bait/screen/flank charge absorb
     2ndWeapon

3 Ogre Bulls - Bait/screen/flank charge absorb
     2ndWeapon

3 Iron Guts, Full command, War banner  (tyrant to join)

3 Iron Guts w/ Champ (Butcher to Join)

3 Iron Guts w/ Champ (Butcher to Join)

3 Iron Guts w/ Champ (Butcher to Join)

3 Yhetees w/ champ - flanks, I think a unit of tombgard hit by yhetti and IG should crumble

3 Yhetees w/ champ

1 Gorger - catapult/casket hunter

1 Gorger - catapult/casket hunter

Casting Pool: 8

Dispel Pool: 5

Models in Army: 33

Total Army Cost: 2498

i'm going blue and a snow theme.  starting with (i forget the brand, but its very nice pigment from michaels, soft body) a royal marine blue, shading with 2 blues, getting lighter each step...  Then highlighting with an 'light blue' , which is much like ice blue, following up with an very very light highlight with white.  Then using a blue wash from citidel.

So far I've done tried a dry brush and it hasn't worked well.  My strategy above hasn't been tried yet, but I have high hopes.

Not sure what i'm going to do with pants/boots, if it will be an army, or a random collection of colors from whatever the ogres could scavenge (thats how i view them).
