Armies of the Kingdoms / Your Painted List
« on: Apr 17, 2012, 03:55:01 AM »
For fun tonight I created a list using every painted model I have and only painted models. I was surprised to it was around 4.5k with kitted out characters. It's also a legal list for bonus points. =D

Gnoblogs / The Dynamic Ogre Project
« on: Mar 24, 2012, 09:08:17 PM »
Welcome to the Dynamic Ogre Project!

The Dynamic Ogre Project is going to follow my progress in converting an Army full of dynamically posed Ogres.

A few weeks back I had an idea of creating an Ogre model that appeared to be in mid jump, lunging at the opponent. This was very successful. Well someone had to go and make a comment that he looked a little odd in a unit of "static" Ogres. I see your challenge and accept!

As a refresher here is the original Dynamic Ogre.

The first part of this project is going to be a 13 man unit of Ironguts. A hammer and anvil in one. With three characters this makes a very nice 4x4 unit. I've got the foundation of the first 3 Ogres ready to go.

Standard Bearer

Super Leaping Ogre

The "I know Ironguts do not have handgun upgrades but do not care" Ogre

Today I also began work on a multi level movement tray. The goal is to have this be essentially a playable diorama.

Stay tune for more!

The Butcher's Cauldron / Dynamic Ogre is Dynamic! (Completed)
« on: Mar 08, 2012, 09:24:34 PM »
Howdy folks, hobby time update. I am currently working on an dynamic action ogre, leaping into action. Reading the ogre fluff you always hear about fast and quick ogres are despite their size, but they all look like they are lumbering about. Well not anymore!

Behold, dynamic ogre being dynamic!

Don't you worry, of course I'll update as he moves along the path to completion.

The Butcher's Cauldron / Red hot Firebelly WIP
« on: Feb 13, 2012, 03:28:41 AM »
Spent the last few hours working on the Firebelly. After re-reading the fluff for inspiration I noticed it mentioned how they burned from within and that their skin glowed. Well, I thought I would try to make the model look, well, like it was glowing from within. I got a little carried away and made all the metal, the ground where he is standing, and the club red hot too.

It is still a work in progress, I have some light source shading, some more highlighting and a few bits here and there to pick out. I will not be doing any more tonight however and thought I'd throw this up for feedback. Comments and critiques welcome.

The Butcher's Cauldron / Ogre Wound Tracking
« on: Feb 10, 2012, 02:35:22 PM »
With all the multi-wound models, unit champs, characters, it can be tough for an Ogre player to keep track of all those wounds. Just how are we suppose to cleanly and easily track wounds on a deathstar, what with 3 characters, unit wound and champion. Dice? Nay I say, nay.

Warmachine and Hordes has it right. Marking wounds on a piece of paper with a dry erase marker is the way works. So I created a PDF that I could print up and laminate to keep track of my Ogres wounds.

I printed mine on some parchment, flicked watered down blood red and a mix of blood red and scorched brown to make some fun blood patterns, burned the edges slightly and "laminated it" with a few strips of clear packing tape. Works like a charm!

There is a page with blood...

or without blood, if you want to add your own.

The Butcher's Cauldron / Nurgle Ogre
« on: Nov 13, 2011, 11:58:17 PM »
Hey hey Stronghold!

I know I posted the start of this somewhere on here a long time ago, but I'm too lazy to find it so I'm putting here for y'all to enjoy. This was my version of a Nurgle Ogre, yes he is puking his own guts, back into his guts, that are spilling out all over the place. You can't see it in the finished photo, but the guts actually go between his legs, drag along the ground and off the rock he is standing on to the back of the base.

The original idea was to use him as maneater, but I love him too much and he has been playing the role of my slaughtermaster lately.

Thoughts comments? Is it Nurgle enough?

The Feeding Grounds / Quartermaster iPad/iPhone app
« on: Oct 01, 2011, 03:32:11 PM »
Hello fellow ogres. I was wondering if anyone else uses this app. I just got it at $4.99 it a little pricy for an app but for an army building tool it's really quite neat. I assume be ause of legal GW issue the app was taken down for a while. It's now back but without any pre made list. I find this good and bad. Its bad because you have to manually input all the unit choices and options which can be time consuming (I actually didn't mind this, helps me memorize all the new choices, options and point). It's neat because since you manually add everything it would be super easy to create house rules and your own special characters/options (mournfang tyrants and bruisers).

It has a few things missing like multiple profiles for things like cavalry and war machines and such but you can still get around that.

I have an army list made for the new book if anyone wants. Link it here but as it has all the points and options I don't want to get the stronghold in trouble.

Armies of the Kingdoms / 2500 List all comers
« on: Oct 01, 2011, 03:23:08 PM »
I don't like building lists against specific armies, but not necessarily super tourney lists either. With that in mind I'd like your thoughts on this list with these questions in mind:

What would you change if making super tourney list?
How would you use it if you were handed it? I don't plan on changing thus list except perhaps the Bruiser's items.

Lords
Slaughtermaster (385)
Level 4 Wizard; Fencers Blades; Greedy Fist; Glittering Scales.

Heroes
Firebelly (208
Level 2 Wizard; Additional hand weapon; Hellheart.

Bruiser (190)
Great weapon; Heavy armor; BSB; Crown of Command; Enchanted Shield; Rock Eye.

Core
6 Ogres (212)
Standard bearer; Bellower; Ironfist.

8 Ironguts (394)
Gutlord; SB with Lookout Gnoblar; Bellower; Standard Of Discipline.

Special
6 Leadbelchers (268
Bellower.

Sabretusks (21)

Sabretusks (21)

Sabretusks (21)

4 Mournfang Cavalry (360)
Crusher; Standard bearer; Bellower; Ironfist; Heavy Armor; Dragonhide Banner.

Rare
Iron Blaster (170)

Stonehorn (250)

2,500 points

The characters go in the ironguts 3 wide, the firebelly and SM make way to the front. With 7 possible drops before the IG and MF ideally I get the chance to place them last or at least after some juicy targets to get good matchups.

The Feeding Grounds / Where is the giant riding globular character?
« on: Sep 13, 2011, 02:59:54 PM »
Anyone remember this rumor from a few months before 8th Ed? Where is he, I want a giant ridden by some crazed gnoblar with all kinds of stupid unreliable rules.

Edit: damn autocorrect in the subject spelled globular!

Rules Questions and FAQs / Hellheart, no cupped hands for you
« on: Sep 04, 2011, 02:21:16 PM »
Reading over the rules for the hellheart I am very pleased to say that enemy wizards do not suffer a miscast but are forced to roll on the miscast table. No transferring it back to your SM/butcher you big frog.

I do wish it was 5d6 no d6x5". While you are more likely to get 30" with it you are also more likely to get 5". I'd take a less random 17" avg range but I guess I'll have to live with it.

The Feeding Grounds / New books biggest winners and losers
« on: Sep 03, 2011, 02:57:24 AM »
After giving the new book a good read I began wondering which units got the biggest boost and which took the biggest hit. This is not to say which are the best and the worst, but rather what units got the biggest swing. This is specific to models that existed in the old book (so no rhin... I mean mournfang cavalry). Needless to say this is my opinion, just looking for a little discussion here =D

Biggest winner: Bulls

Before these guys were okay, and you had to have them, but were obviously over costed. These guys got heaps better with a great points reduction (25% if you've been running LA/IF). They did lose an extra attack with the iron fist, but with the improvement to the bull, err, ogre charge you have a chance to more than make up the difference. A unit of 9 fully kitted w/ full command is 119 points cheaper, a horde is 218. It kinda feels like buy 2 get 1 free.

Biggest loser: Gorger

With the slots of 7th Ed gone the Gorger finally found himself a place in most lists. Now I just cant see using him. At an increase of 17% we got true frenzy and no movement restrictions (though I can't remember a time when I didn't move a Gorger closer to the enemy), but can no longer choose the table edge. Not being able to consistently place him where he will have the most impact just hamstrings him too much in my opinion.

I did want to give a biggest winner runner up to the Leadbelcher. Boom hur hur hur!

Armies of the Kingdoms / Same problem as last two books
« on: Sep 03, 2011, 02:34:18 AM »
Like the TK and O&G book before it there are too many choices. I can't get everything I want under 3k. I can definitely say I see the Tyrant sitting it out on the sidelines.

In a 2.4-2.6k list I see myself running some like the following:

SM lvl 4 fully kitted
BSB
Butcher lvl 2
Firebelly lvl 1
2 medium or 1 horde unit of bulls
1 medium ironguts
Ironbaster
Stonehorn
Thundertusk

Maybe some. Leadbelchers to mix it up. I see maneaters and ironguts getting exchanged for each other.

Maybe the real answer is to convince everyone the standard game should be 3k =D

Tales of Conquest / Ogre's @ Adepticon
« on: Apr 05, 2011, 02:24:02 PM »
Well, I'm back from Adepticon. It was really kick *at symbol-dollar symbol-dollar symbol*.

Took some pics with the iPhone over the weekend.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/30965810@N08/5590656422/in/set-72157626430675744/lightbox/

First off I went through Geek Nation Tours. So for a welcome dinner on Thursday night we got to eat buffet style tacos while listening to some of the Adepticon event organizers, the guys from 40k Radio/Battle Foam, Black Library authors Dan Abnett and Nathan Long and Jeff Carroll and Kent Fury from Podhammer. I'll be honest, I haven't gotten into the Black Library stuff yet so I was more excited to finally meet Jeff after listening to his podcast since episode 2. It was awesome to get to listen to those guys though, they have a few fans.

That night I had a mold making class, kinda meh, but did give me some good ideas about how to make and cast sculpts. Maybe a custom one for the club some day (who knows, I'm slow but motivated ;)). Ended with a drink with Jeff and Matty Cole (from Podhammer fame).

Turns out my roommate was a really cool guy from Iowa playing Chaos Dwa... excuse me, Dwarfs of Chaos (Indy GT book) in our team tournament.

Friday, day 1 - I got up to play from 10AM till 10PM 3 games of 3k points of Ogres called the Big Brawl. 73 players total, 2 Ogre players. The other Ogre player was a guy from the Pointhammered Podcast (very "mature" podcast, but one of my favorites). His army was amazing, all the Pointhammer guys really know how to paint. I finished 63 out of 83, beating the other Ogre player by one place. Go my Ogres! To wrap up the evening I played my roommates Ogres with our 1k lists for the team tourney. I win, hurray.

Saturday, day 2 - This one started early, 8AM to 10PM. We were playing four 2.5 hour games, it was the Fantasy Championship Tournament. 2200 points. This was Adepticon's biggest Fantasy tournament with 134 players. Not a bad showing. I was *drum roll* the only Ogre player who entered! Needless to say I was the highest ranking player at Adepticon's Fantasy Championship Tournament this year. *Clap*

After the tournament was over I went out for some drinks with the Podhammer guys, good times had by all at Rita's. It's hard (thats what she said) showing up to a bar around 11:30/12AM without having a single drink. That means I had to put a couple down quick to be able to enjoy the scene.

Sunday, day 3 - I could have sworn that the Fantasy Team Tournament started at 10, but I was wrong. So after getting back around 3AM and waking up at 7:45 to find that dice dropped 8AM was unpleasant at best. I did have to throw up about half way through game one, but quickly rallied and enjoyed the rest of the day. Due to the need to cleanup the day did end early at 4PM so I had a few moments to do something other than play Fantasy.

I sat in on a recording of 40K radio as well as Podhammer. Good stuff. After that was dinner and poker/board games. Dinner was Lou Malnatis deep dish pizza. Being a guy from New York I was ready to see what all the fuss was about. I don't see what all the fuss was about, but not in the way you think. The pizza was amazing, but so different from New York pizza they should never be compared. Its like comparing a compact car to big rig. Sure they both drive, but have significant horsepower and/or gas mileage.

The D6 Generation put on a fantastic night of board games. Possibly the most fun of the weekend. I played 2.5 games of Cutthroat Caverns. If you haven't played I highly recommend it. I also managed to win a copy of the game so good stuff.

So that was the weekend. =D

House Rules / Gnoblar Hurlers
« on: Mar 31, 2011, 09:22:14 PM »
I thought of this unit the other day and it made me chuckle.

Gnoblar Hurlers. Ogres deployed in a similar fashion to skink/krox units. Each ogre could throw 2 gnoblars per turn. I couldn't really think of the best way to make rules for a unit like this.

Should the fire using ballistics skill? Should they auto hit with a guess range like the death rocket (2-4d6 + str)? How many points would they cost? I'd figure a little under costed as the are throw 4 points of gnoblars each turn.

Thoughts?

The Feeding Grounds / 3rd Battalion
« on: Dec 20, 2010, 04:17:42 PM »
Well, it was bound to happen. 8th ed comes about, bigger units blah blah blah.

It got me thinking, with as sweet of a deal as our battalion is I can't be the only one to be picking them one after another. How many battalions have y'all picked up?

Armies of the Kingdoms / 3k Adepticon List
« on: Nov 30, 2010, 03:18:26 PM »
Hey all. Getting a list together for Adepticon. Here is what I'm thinking for 3k.

Tyrant w/ Luck Gnob
Thundermace
Armour of Fortune
Mawseeker

Slaughtermaster
Tenderiser
Scroll
Wyrdstone Necklace
Ironcurse Icon

Bruiser BSB w/ CLS & Luck Gnob
Crown of Command
Enchanted Shield
Mawseeker

Butcher
Skullmantle
Mask of Terror

Bulls x 11
Full Command

Bulls x 11
Full Command

Ironguts x 9
Full Command
Standard of Discipline

Gnob Fighters x 20
Groinbiter

Gnob Trappers x 8

2 Scraplaunchers

3 Gorgers

2999 Points

The Tyrant and BSB go in the Irongut unit. The Slaughtermaster and Butcher go in one of the Bull units. The BSB and Butcher sit safely in the second rank.

The units will be deployed 4 wide most of the time unless I see the need to go  3 wide for the ranks.

The army when possible will be deployed almost as a unit with gnobs blocking the scrappies LOS for charge purposes.

My biggest question is should I put that Tenderiser on the SM or give him a Bloodcleaver to keep him healed.

Any and all comments welcome.

Armies of the Kingdoms / As broken as possible 3k list
« on: Oct 25, 2010, 12:40:00 PM »
So I'm going to a tourney in a few months. 3k list. The idea to be as broken as possible. I'm wondering what some thoughts are around here. I'm thinking of a skrag list with with 10-12 gorges. 2 scrappies. 1 Irongut block, 2 bull blocks.

What thoughts other thoughts do you have?

Do you think a ton of gorgers is a good idea? My thinking is they are cheap and good. With a ton of unbreakable little units coming on from wherever I need them can't be bad can it?

Rules Questions and FAQs / Sword Gnoblar supporting attacks
« on: Sep 21, 2010, 01:43:40 PM »
I like hiding my BSB in the second rank. He only gets 3 support attacks so he looses on off his profile. If he were to take Sword Gnoblars do you think they would get to attack? I suppose it all depends on if you count them as part of the model. I can see it going either way and I wanted to get the Stronghold's opinion.

Thoughts.

Tyrant Concept:
I really like the idea of the Thundermace, and while not optimum really want to give it a shot so that will be staying for the time being. I've squeezed in what I could to keep him tough to kill in the front rank.

Bruiser Concept:
I've given him the tools to a little safe but mainly going to keep him in the second rank and provide re-rolls and stubborn.

Slaughtermaster Concept:
This guy will be helping out in CC when they get there. The sickle is to keep my magic going on the event I fail but allow me to safely 1 dice cast. No cutting Bulls "just cuz" at 12 points a wound.

Butcher Concept:
Terror w/ -1 leadership to help in CC when possible and assist in panic tests. Perhaps not optimum but sounds fun.

The idea is to put the Tyrant and Bruiser in the Ironguts making a hammer & anvil. The Slaughtermaster and Butcher go in a Bull unit w/ Full Command on one flank of the Ironguts. The other Bull unit goes on the opposite flank. Combo charges when possible

The Scraplauncher and Gnoblars will bring up the rear with the Gnoblars blocking the Scraplauncher from any unwanted charge reactions. Also, unit a Gnoblar unit to charge in and cancel steadfast if/when possible/needed.

Main concern is that I will have very little magic def.

So... ¿Waddayathunk?

Gnoblogs / Twon's Frostmaw Ogres (now w/ more Nurgle!)
« on: Sep 08, 2010, 02:21:49 PM »
Greetings.

I going to start a little gnoblog here. This will mainly be about the modeling and painting of my army as opposed to background stories and the like.

The name of my Ogre tribe is the Frostmaw Tribe. These Ogres live at high altitudes. I am a native Vermonter (currently living in NY, I know its a sin) and have a thing for snow. I really wanted to play around with some snow bases and cold/frozen looking flesh. The Ogres have a purple/blue looking skin tone to represent being in the freezing cold for generations.

I'm currently scratch building a Tyrant to try my hand at some serious greenstuff work. Pics to shortly follow. =D

Hope you all enjoy.

Positive and constructive feedback is always welcome =D

The Butcher's Cauldron / Scratch Built Thundermace
« on: Aug 26, 2010, 02:28:42 AM »
I've decided I wanted to try my hand and building a model from scratch. My first task I decided was a weapon. Obviously a large blunt object, but other than that I wasn't sure. After 30 minutes of google images, nothing that really stuck my eye. I took a break to work on my 8th ed army list and saw the picture of the Thundermace from the magic weapons page.

This ogre I'm sculpting is going to have to be huge to wield this thing. Its borderline ridiculous in scale.

Edit: I just realized that I took the picture next to the one in the book for reference and scale, but it has the points on it. Me thinks I'll need to reshoot it so GW doesn't come to my house with the black hawk gyrocopters...

The Butcher's Cauldron / Balsa Wood
« on: Jan 27, 2010, 11:23:01 AM »
I'm going to be making my own movement trays out of balsa wood but never really worked with the stuff. So I have the following simple questions:

Is balsa wood hard to cut with a hobby saw or should I get something a little more rugged?
What thickness should I be looking for, is 1/16" to flimsy? 1/8 to thick?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

House Rules / Gorger Butcher
« on: Nov 17, 2009, 04:10:28 PM »
So, you may have read a few weeks ago I started a Butcher Conversion from a Gorger model (I had a free extra gorger model due to a shipping error and wanted to try something unique). Well, that was enough to get the ol' noodle workin'. Its actually pretty simple on paper. Combine all the best stats of each. Add up the points. You get the following.

Hero
Gorger Butcher: 205 Points (130+75)

M:6 WS:3 BS:2 S:5 T:5 W:4 I:2 A:4 Ld:8

A Gorger Butcher may not be the army general. In addition to taking up a Hero choice, a Gorger Butcher also takes up a Rare slot.

Weapons & Armor: Gaping maw and crusted talons

Magic: A Gorger Butcher always uses Gut Magic. Unlike normal Gorger Models, Gorger Butchers can benefit from Gut Magic.

Options:
  • May choose magic items from the Common or Ogre magic items list to a maximum total value of 50 points

Special Rules: Cause Fear, Unbreakable, Killing Blow, Ravenous, Bull Charge, Immune to Poison

I would think that a Gorger Butcher would not be able to take any gnoblars, as I'm sure they would just be devoured.

A little fluff to justify it. Imagine a Gorger emerging from a cavern during a feast, smelling all manner of blood and gore. Imagine being said gorger, seeing a butcher. Covered in blood, big and fat, standing in front of a big ol' meat pot. Quite a tasty meal I'd say.

The gorger devours the butcher (insert messy description of your choice here). I'd imagine that would be quite a meal and the great maw would be pleased. All ogres in the vicinity would certainly be impressed. They would also fear of being eaten, so they ensure that the gorgers meat pot stays full.

I also had an idea for a special rule just for this guy.

Cannibalistic Hunger.
At the start of the Ogre players turn roll a D6 for every Gorger Butcher in a unit of Ogres or in Combat. On the roll of a 1 the Gorger Butcher requires immediate sustenance. If the Gorger Butcher is in a unit of Ogres an Ogre model is immediately eaten. If the Gorger Butcher is in Combat any non character, non larger target model in B2B contact, chosen by the Controlling Ogre player is eaten.

Upon eating a model roll a D6. On the roll of a 1 repeat. This could continue until there are no more eligible models to eat. On a roll of a 2-5 the Gorger Butcher gets Frenzy. On the roll of a 6 the Gorger Butcher gets Frenzy and Hatred.

This effect can only happen once per battle (ie, once a roll of 1 is rolled at the beginning of a turn, besides eating additional models that turn the effect wont happen again)

Now, question, I'm still a little new to WH and never tried to create rules for a new character. Points wise, is this too cheap? Too expensive? Maybe a concession/fluff based on rule on what I describe no other butchers could be taken? Maybe make it count as a hero level slaughtermaster (12 inch range and 4 power dice, still with 50 points of magic items?)

Being ravenous and the possibility of eating ogre models it has some slight negative effects. It seems like it could be fun to just bust this guy up the middle. Being unbreakable and able to heal wounds back seems very strong however.

Just tossing it out there.
