Stronghold News / The Last Little Bit - Greasus Short Story
« on: Dec 21, 2012, 01:14:47 PM »
A Greasus Goldtooth short story written by Robert Earl (author of Wild Kingdoms) and titled 'The Last Little Bit' has been released by The Black Library as part of their 2012 Advent Calendar:

"Ogres have a simple rule for succession – he who can eat the most will inherit the lot. As the Goldtooth brothers sit down to feast, none of them suspect just how far they will have to go to down the last little bit."

The ebook costs £0.79 / $1.25 and is available for purchase now.

Stronghold News / Bad Dice Daily - Gutmas Ogre Army
« on: Dec 21, 2012, 12:47:49 PM »
Ben Curry comes up with some ideas for a Christmas (I think he means Gutmas) themed Ogre Kingdoms army in this year's final episode of the Bad Dice Daily podcast:

"With Christmas almost upon us I end the year's podcast with a Christmas themed army episode.

The list I decided to go with is inspired about the grotty, dishevelled Bad Santas that are in every American Christmas movie.  I have an idea of a union meeting and strike action as a group of Santas go on a protest march and turn into a riot!

My Christmas Themed Army would be based on Ogre Kingdoms.  I would use Skrag as the main Santa on his sleigh with his big sack of toys.  Skrag is accompanied by Gorgers and they would be represented by Snowmen.

The core of my army would be a large unit of Iron Guts.  These guys would be the Bad Santas, looking grimy and angry waving Christmasy utensils.  I would also be running lots of Gnoblars.  They would be painted in the traditional Christmas Elf colours and the units champions would be a large ‘Elf’ in the style of Will Ferell.  I would kit the Gnoblars out with hand weapons made of wood and they will be trappers too, leaving Christmas presents all over the place.

The special choices would be some Sabertusks as reindeer, Mournfang Cavalry as the 3 Wise Men and some Leadbelchers with Snow Cannons.

No ogre list is complete without an Ironblaster so this big gun will be shooting out presents.

To finish the list I need a few more characters so Jack Frost would be made from a Firebelly and finally the Grinch will make an appearance as either a Giant or another character."

Off Topic / Disney buys Lucasfilm, 3 new Star Wars movies coming
« on: Oct 30, 2012, 09:10:28 PM »
Wow! It'll be interesting to see what Disney can do with the Star Wars universe without George Lucas at the helm, could be good!

Quote
In 2015, we're planning to release Star Wars Episode 7 – the first feature film under the "Disney-Lucasfilm" brand. That will be followed by Episodes 8 and 9 – and our long term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years. We're very happy that George Lucas will be creative consultant on our new Star Wars films and that Kathleen Kennedy, the current Co-Chair of Lucasfilm, will executive produce. George handpicked Kathy earlier this year to lead Lucasfilm into the future. She'll join Disney as President of Lucasfilm, reporting into Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and integrating and building the Star Wars franchise across our company.

Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company (DIS) has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.

“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm’s legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world’s top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney’s strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.

The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney’s very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company’s unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application of innovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney’s portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company’s ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world’s highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

From Mantic's Kickstarter page:

"We're making steady progress on the new sculpts for our Kings of War range as those of you at our Open Day can attest, and sculptor extraordinaire Rémy Tremblay has pretty much finished the fantastic range of Ogres.

The range currently includes 4 different weapon options and 6 different heads, and Rémy is just finishing off the iconic Ogre Hero that kicked off this project all the way back in May. Want to see what he's been up to?"

The Butcher's Cauldron / Monthly Painting Challenge - October 2012
« on: Oct 02, 2012, 01:46:58 PM »
It's time for the October Painting Challenge! You only have until the 10th to make your pledges and get painting!

It's the
:maw: October Painting Challenge! :maw:

Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:
  • All Pledges will be frozen after the 10th day of the month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
  • If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the Stronghold, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
  • We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable.
  • Extra incentive: I will be awarding :gnoblar: to those who complete their pledge. I'll also be awarding an extra :gnoblar: to the one pledgee who posts the most photos throughout the month!

*Please* post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, however this is the Ogre Stronghold, I think most of us would prefer to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies, and/or any other Models please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

:bsb:
Let's get to it!

« on: Sep 20, 2012, 08:17:54 PM »
Over the last few days some of you may have noticed a few bits and pieces of a new Ogre Achievements system appearing here at the Stronghold. Well, after about a week of working on this, it's finally time to unveil the new system in full! :D

Achievements are awarded for completing various tasks both here at the Stronghold and out in the real world. Gnoblar Messengers deliver messages to you when you earn Achievements, and by earning Achievements you'll gain Pet Gnoblars, Big Names, a great sense of pride and the eternal respect of your fellow Stronghold Ogres! :P

Achievements are divided into three categories:

FORUM ACHIEVEMENTS (listed here) - Earned by completing tasks on the forum.
GAMING ACHIEVEMENTS (listed here) - Earned by playing games.
HOBBY ACHIEVEMENTS (listed here) - Earned by completing hobby activities.

The Achievement pictures are colour-coded to match their category e.g.:

You can find the complete list of Ogre Achievements over here.

The Stronghold automatically tracks and awards many Ogre Achievements, but for Achievements earned away from the Stronghold (which obviously can't be tracked so easily), you'll be required to post in the relevant Achievement topics in the brand new Ogre Achievements forum section.

By posting in an Achievement topic, you'll automatically unlock the desired Achievement. So please don't reply to achievement topics unless you've met the Achievement requirements!
