The Feeding Grounds / No ogre digital army book?
« on: May 19, 2013, 01:40:18 PM »
Anyone know why GW seems to have skipped the Ogre Kingdoms when it comes to army books? elves WoC, Vc and daemons have them. Even Orcs have them. Why not ogres?

Also, against PBs, the Maw spell is actually useful for once.  Just don't misfire.  :P

Gnoblar Wizard

Lore of the Little Maw? :p

Great weapon will lose you an ironfist/magical shield option. Another popular build is the fencer's blade, which is a paired weapon.

If it really bothers your OCD that much, i'd recommend magnetizing different arm and weapon options for your SMs. This will allow greater flexibility in list building. There are many guides on the intarwebs about how to do this.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Stonehorn Tactics
« on: Mar 16, 2013, 02:24:54 PM »
I usually pair my stonehorn Pebbles with his seeing-eye sabretusk Mittens in front, to redirect charges, and to block Frenzy-charges.

A possible combo against some opponents would be to have the stonehorn cause Terror, and when the enemy runs away have the Swiftstride tusk run them down. :)

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Charging a unit already in combat
« on: Jan 31, 2013, 02:37:22 PM »
Only one model ends up in contact. No sliding.

Even if the xxx unit covered the ooo completely, iii should still be able to charge if you can get them in a position where the corners of iii and ooo would be touching. Touching corners are still considered base to base (under Who Can Strike? section of the Close Combat chapter in the rulebook)

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Dual Man Eater Units

Swiftstride also improves their chances of getting ogre charge. But yeah you'll really need Stubborn though ,as they may be out of the leadership bubble if you do charge long distances, and they may need to be able to hold for a turn while the rest of your line catches up.

My games are usually pretty small, so I tend to avoid Maneaters and Mournfangs. Leadbelchers get stuff done happily though, and the Gorger has never let me down.

I did a double take there. Gorgers never let you down? I've used them in a couple games, and they either (a)arrive too late to make their points back, (b)arrive too far from any important battles/units to help out, or (c) don't arrive at all.

They managed to be useful in one game where they showed up next to a juicy block of archers and a trebuchet, but aside from a counter to gunline-style armies they're too iffy for my tastes. Maybe in a Skragg-themed army, but outside that, they're another leave-home unit for me. Unless you're using them in a way I haven't thought of.

Also, "Gunline-Style" sounds like a warhammer meme. You saw it here first.

Maw-Pit Sagas / Re: MANEATER RPG II: the sequel
« on: Nov 29, 2012, 02:32:22 PM »
If You still gave room for players, definitely interested.

Thinking of playing Brugg Lockjaw Cauldronbearer, an aspiring butcher/maneater who travels the Old World in search of new things to eat, and new spells to discover through gastromancy. :)

Armies of the Kingdoms / Re: 500pt Ogre List(s) for local "league"
« on: Nov 29, 2012, 02:11:43 PM »
A lot of people are giong firebelly, and I know the breath weapon is golden at this points level, but is he worth it otherwise? Magic almost always gets dispelled, since you only have the  one spell and the opponent can throw all his dispel dice at it each time.

In the meantime, you get an Ld7 general, in an already shaky army (without BSB and probably without stubborn).

I've playtested 500 points quite a lot, and have gotten more use out of a kitted-out Bruiser with 3+/6+ and a magic weapon like the Biting Blade. Gleaming pennant on IG helps mitigate the lack of BSB.

How have your other lists turned out for you?

Armies of the Kingdoms / 500 Point Newbie-Friendly List
« on: Nov 22, 2012, 11:23:53 AM »
My friends and I are putting up a local gaming club, and have been teaching a dozen or so newbies how to play WFB. Now we're organizing a tournament at warband levels (500 points), with a box of your Core unit as first prize.

I've been trying to come up with an army that isn't TOO brutal (hard to do with ogres, I know), but is still fun to play, so I thought I'd run this by your guys- let me know what you think.

We've ruled that armies are allowed to use Champions as generals to give some factions (VC and TK mostly) a reasonable chance at winning. Also that a minimum of two units are required, aside from characters.

Ogres 500 LIST 1
Heroes - 125
Firebelly (125)
Potion Of Speed.

Core - 212
4 Ironguts (212)
Bellower; standard bearer; Look-out Gnoblar; Standard Of Discipline.

Special - 161
2 Mournfang Cavalry (140)
heavy armour; ironfists.

1 Sabretusk (21)

Probably not going to use this one, as the mournfangs are a bit much. However, based on some research I've been doing, a lot of OK players say that a Firebelly is great at this pointage. But I've playtested this army so far, and magic hasn't done a lot for me. A level 1 Firebelly means the opponent gets to throw all his dice at dispels, all the time. The breath weapon is great, but is it worth the Leadership hit?

Ogres 500 LIST 2 (Ogre_Kingdoms)
Heroes - 123
Bruiser (123)
Dragonhelm; ironfist; heavy armour.

Core - 195
5 Ogres (195)
Crusher; Bellower; standard bearer; Look-out Gnoblar; ironfists.

Special - 182
2 Mournfang Cavalry (140)
heavy armour; ironfists.

1 Sabretusk (21)

1 Sabretusk (21)

A variant of list one, without magic. May need to playtest further.

Ogres 500 LIST 3 (Ogre_Kingdoms)
Core - 250
5 Ironguts (250)
Gutlord; Bellower; standard bearer; Gleaming Pennant.

Special - 250
3 Leadbelchers (139)
Bellower.

Gorger (90)

1 Sabretusk (21)

Probably going to go with this one. Fairly flexible, with some fun units tossed in, but still competetive. I just wanted a discussion of army building at this points level. Any suggestions?

It's been a while!

But I'm back to playing WFB, after a lnog hiatus, and pack in the (painting) saddle.

First off, the Grey Devourer's Firebelly, Brugg Magmadrinker:

Just a little more cleanup, some basing, and he's done. Trying out a new method of painting skin, one that doesn't involve using Ogryn Flesh wash. I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the results so far.

I use Tamiya's white, and sometimes grey when they've sold out the white. Expensive stuff, but i swear by it. :)

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Question about brettonians...
« on: May 26, 2012, 09:28:49 AM »
The chalice is in addition to the channeling for dispel dice.

With those and 3 channeling attempts he pretty well shuts down my magic phase...

Sounds like a job for the Hellheart. :)

Either go lots of firebellies/heavens lore, so you're casting too many spells to dispel em all (or if you play em right, draw out those one-use dispels)' or better, don't rely on magic at all, so thse points he spent going anti-magic will be wasted. :)

I commandeered one of the wife's makeup brushes. They work wonders for dust and pet fur.

It's right there in page 41 of the army book:

"When rolling to hit with the Leadbelcher Gun, ignore to hit modifiers for Moving and Shooting, and for Multiple Shots."

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Wind Blast
« on: May 24, 2012, 01:57:09 PM »
1. Because wind blast happens on your turn, if they don't move on their next turn then they don't count as having moved THAT turn, which is what matters for his shooting phase. Doesn't affect stand and shoot either, because charge reactions happen before spellcasting.

2. The only time a unit is allowed to move off the table is pursuit off the table edge, otherwise they are not allowed to move. As per Wind Blast spell description, units not able to move just get the d6 hits.

21
Made some great progress, over the last week, but still have quite a lot of basing to do!

Pics over in my new gnoblog (that's one off my May pledge!): http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=24676.0

Gnoblogs / Mogruk's Grey Devourers
« on: May 20, 2012, 08:17:55 AM »
Mogruk, once a prominent maneater and under-tyrant of the Ironskin tribe, came into power shortly after coming into the possession if a dangerous, powerful artifact: the disembodied, still-living head of the infamous slaughtermaster Grut.

Under Grut's influence, Mogruk set out with a handful of ogres and began a campaign north into the World's Edge Mountains, for a purpose known only to the new tyrant and his ever more influential advisor.
---

Mostly WIP's, have to get all these painted and snow-based by next Sunday for a tournament, afterwards, I'll start with the tattoos (still not too confident about my freehand skills, and don't want to ruin the skin tones I'd worked so hard on).

Mogruk bearing Grut's head aloft, his  Ironguts, and his (living) slaughtermaster and butcher

Mogruk's Ogres

The One-Eyes, his loyal leadbelchers

Moguk's pride, his paired Ironblasters

The Fireriders, led by Mogrim's second, Krumm Gorechew in his albino mournfang Whitey

I believe the term the ogre rulebook said about bounced spells is that they're "wasted." but they do count as having been cast. I guess for lore effects like Bloodgruel or certain items/abilities that makes a difference.

And yeah, in my book, fluff and/or looks are more fun than making the winningest army. Explains why i spend more time painting  than i do playing:)

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Terrain and cannons
« on: May 18, 2012, 01:06:19 PM »
The only terrain that effects cannonballs are cliffs and buildings.  Both stop the cannonball, and I THINK you remove the building afterwards.

That's obstacles that you remove after a cannon shot. Shooting at buildings does d6 hits from the cannon for the unit inside, but the building isn't removed. I wish it were, that would be awesome.

Coming into this party late, but--

May pledges:

1. Base 7 ogres, 8 ironguts, 6 mournfangs, 6 belchers, SM, Bruiser, blasters and Butcher in my planned slushy snow theme.

2. Finish painting my 2nd ironblaster

3. Start a Gnoblog

Need an extra kick in the pants to get 1 and 2 going, as i need to get my army fully based and painted in time for a local tourney on the 27th. Pics to follow as soon as my desktop gets back from the shop.
