The Feeding Grounds / Re: paying the butchers tax

maw is great vs DE pendant lord ona peg. magic missiles do no armour save and the pendant saves on a 1 or a 2. 7 hits = 4 wounds = 3 get through. puts the fear of god into the Pendant with 1+armour models. i do prefer death and shadows though.

Actually, since all Monstrous Cavalry can now use their mount's toughness, 7 hits=1 wound now.. not so hot.  Even if he was toughness 3 it would still be only 2 wounds normally.

Id say you can take any choice with yhetees off that list and add one more selection: Mournfangs + More Mournfangs!

Suprised to see so much support for the ManEaters.  I haven't used them all that much and when I have, they haven't impressed but maybe I wasn't playing them right.  What kind of unit sizes and equip builds are people using?

Hmm, now how about that banner that lets you reroll charge dice..

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Flying Death Fist
« on: Oct 17, 2012, 09:29:32 PM »
I used him for one tourney.  I made a carpet out of some materials from walmart, magnets, chicken fencing wire, and a clear stand.  He is quite stable on the carpet even though it is a heavy metal model that is only magnetized on there.  Quite suprised myself at my first ever conversion.

Anyhow, yeah he is pretty good that way.  If I didn't have to buy a Bruiser to fill in as general while I go out and wreak havok, it would be better though.  Don't forget that even though you cant join units, you could still be near a unit for a 4+ look out sir, or you could hide behind your units as fat men tend to stop cannon shots,  and with the charmed shield and ironblasters to back you up, I don't really fear cannons all that much.  It is just a points issue for me.  Do you really gain that much by flying around?  Even if you deathfist, isn't just running forward enough to get you in range of most things?  Being able to fly does have amazing synergy with the Death lore.  Being able to put that P.Sun where the sun doesn't normally shine, putting that bubble -1s/t spell in the perfect spot, and of course getting in range for both sniping spells.

Don't forget the swiftstride that chariot grants you.  I used to think since only move 6 that it didn't get it.

Here is a 3 caster list that might be ok and the points work to exactly 2500:

SM, COC, Greedy F, Glittering Scales, Great Wep, lvl 4 death
Butcher Hellheart, great wep
Firebelly d.scroll, extra wep
Bruiser bsb rune maw, great wep (can switch to if I guess but you can hide him in second rank)
Ironguts x 9 including fc and std of disc.
12 Ogres music/stnd,IFs
Mournfangs x4 mus/std/ ha/if/dragonhide banner
3xsabre
2xIronblaster

alternatively, make the ironguts a horde and cut the bulls out entirely or make a smaller - do mostly nothing unit.  I don't have that much experience with the 12 bull units so not sure how good they will be even at 12 large.  Maybe the lvl1 maw can just take the stubborn spell and stubborn them up when they need it.

The more I think about this list, the more I think that with 3 anti magic things in the casters, I guess you could drop the Rune Maw banner and find something more fun for the BSB.

Templar, I popped this into AB and it is 359 points over.  You should probably know that there is never room for 3 casters in an Ogre list.  If I want both d.scroll and hh in a list which I think you do for a no holds barred, I like the Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Dispel Scroll, (Sometimes Other trickster's Shard) build for SM.  The Secondary caster should probably be a Firebelly.  This means COC and Dragonhelm or ench shield on BSB.  The other points are probably going to have to come out of one of those Ogre bull units.

This is probably too much to ask for but if they added this, I would be a subscriber:

A legit Fantasy battle report that is edited for rules correctness and actually go into detail about grey area rules that come up.  Possibly even leading to.. gasp.. faq updates?

The Feeding Grounds / Re: big sabertusk units... with hunters?!

I think the problem with a big, fast, hitty unit of these guys is just that Mournfangs can do everything better.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: How do you run your mournfang?

If you are against horde units, 6 in a line could contact fully against them and cause maximum carnage.  I'm going to give 5 a try in a few weeks.

Isn't that the same as using EBay?  How much do Ebayers charge on shipping to Austrailia anyhow?

Gorgers have fallen out of favor because you can do thier war machine hunting job on turn 1 with your Ironblasters or cheaper with sabretusks.  If you get lucky enough to get a gorger in play on the first turn that they can, it is turn 2 and you have to wait a turn to charge with them.  Plus they have gotten more costly pointwise.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Hunter with big tusk-unit?
« on: Mar 27, 2012, 01:05:08 AM »
When my single sabretusk was charged by a unit of 30 VC dog things the other night, he held.  Did 3 wounds and took none to tie the combat lol!  I knew then that I'd be making this unit one day.  That and the fact I have a nicely painted hunter sitting in the closet oh and the fact that I can get 6 Warg models to make this possible cash wise.

Going to try this out eventually.  I think I would prefer the Armour of Silvered Steel, Luckstone, GW loadout.  Rely on kills to win combats.  Pick good targets and/or hit flanks.  Without the BSB reroll, I think the COC goes down a bit in value.  Save that for your Character bunker.

Know this then, Mournfang Cavalry is among the wickedest units in the game.  Usually run in sizes of 4, 3, or 2.  Ironblasters are also very good although most think they are fairly priced.
Oh, and Sabretusks can no be taken as 1 ofs so people usually take 2-3 of these as extra deployments, redirectors, warmachine hunters, etc.  Gorgers have fallen out of favor.

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Submitting for an updated FAQ?

Here's another one I was wondering.  Is the Rune Maw banner capable of bouncing death magic character sniping spells as it doesn't target the unit per se?

Probably should be moved to the rules questions and FAQ threads but I have one from over there that was not clear:

Does an Ironblaster pivot before shooting or not?

Guess I won't be needing that 3rd Ironblaster... Anyone want it?

I read on another forum that a guy at warhammer world asked there and they are allowed to be used as sabretusks.  I thought the rule was if it is made by or was made by Games Workshop, then it is allowed.  It's why you get away with models from BattleMasters and Talisman and the like.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Units not worth their points. Why?
« on: Mar 13, 2012, 04:32:45 PM »
I think the OP brings up a somewhat valid point.  This is what seperates good army books from great army books.  Just look over to the Orc and Goblin army book and you will see a ton of options that pretty much all look viable.  Nothing save the Savage Orc BigUns look like auto-includes.

Anyway, I wonder if GW really does test everything out and find apropriate points costs for them.  I mean, they force themselves to use them and find out about how much they are worth in game terms vs us who just look at them on paper and compare to other choices and just fall out of favor.  I'm not that interested to test this theory myself but hey, maybe..

Of course, winning combat by a few points is nice against a typical army but against undead and demons, you need to smash harder to delete big units.

The only thing I can see someone hanging their hat on in favor of curse forcing tests but fanatics not dying is the word "piece".  Does Open terrain fit the "piece of terrain" verbage of the fanatic wording?

The Feeding Grounds / Re: What can Ogres bring that's scary?
« on: Mar 12, 2012, 03:19:48 PM »
I'm actually a bit surprised about the Ironblaster. I know people fielding large things fear artillery, but I didn't really see it as a scary all-comers unit, just a very versatile and useful one. Interesting.

After playing the double IB list twice against my VC friend's army and doing only 2 total wounds over the course of those games, I am rethinking the effectiveness vs points.  I think I am going to replace my second IB with a unit of 2 more mournfangs which will enable me a bonus 30 points spent eleswehere.
