You can always upload the pic to photobucket or tinypic.com and use that to host the image.

But "in range" is only in base contact for the phoenix. I'd say the thundertusk aura is better ... except for the part where the phoenix's aura confers -1S as well, which is pretty sweet on a T6 monster.

Rules Questions and FAQs / Re: Ward save + Parry save question
« on: May 18, 2013, 11:13:46 PM »
By my count there are exactly three ways a high elf can claim a parry save:

1) A prince with hand weapon/shield
2) A noble with hand weapon/shield
3) Any character with Shield of the Merwyrm and a single-handed weapon

Every other character/unit in the book that can select a shield is denied a parry save for one reason or another!

It's actually only MR1 but it is to all units within 12". Remember that back in 6th edition MR1 was a bit more valuable!

But a more amusing comparison is Mork's War Banner and the Banner of the World Dragon since they're both 8th edition books and they're very similar items. Albeit that Mork's War Banner is generally considered a bit rubbish, it really highlights the difference there.

There's nothing wrong with playing like that. Inquisitor is a prime example of a game not designed with balance in mind. I love that game. Necromunda/Mordheim to a lesser degree. I'm a fan of playing non-competitive scenario-driven narrative wargames.

You can play Warhammer without points values. It's good fun! The rulebook even has a whole section on it. Epic: Armageddon had an even better distinction between scenario play and standard "tournament style" (it was even called that).

But the standard format for Warhammer, using points values and force organisation rules and magic item limits and soforth is designed for competitive, antagonistic (i.e. both players against each other), tournament-style mirrored objective games. That's what we have, and if points values, etc., don't stand up to scrutiny then we simply have a poorly made game.

This argument never makes any sense to me. It's still an antagonistic, competitive game. You can make it without points values and make it a narrative sort of game, but Warhammer is not that game. Even for "casual" play we expect armies to be balanced otherwise why points values?

Yes, flaming banner is a big no no on snipers as you say. After that, I always like the Ld banner and gleaming pennant on maneaters. Or, if blood and glory isn't an issue, save the points altogether and don't buy a banner.

I don't think this is necessarily true. While you do need to worry about that 2+ ward save, having the flaming banner can be very beneficial. It allows you to peel off a few shots at a unit with regen (like abomb or trolls) before your leadbelchers and/or ironblasters open up into them or even strip regen off of a few different units.

Oh no question. Flaming banner is great for poisoned maneaters with guns. Just not on poisoned maneaters with guns and sniper.

Though if High Elves are coming into your meta rethink that. Stupid Banner of the World Dragon...

So basically the whole unit is etehereal correct

Pretty much the opposite. The whole unit gets a 2+ save against magical attacks but not against mundane.

I think ogres have enough non-magical thumping power that this banner shouldn't be a major issue. I'd still want some magic weapons and/or magic missiles for anti-etheral duty.

I'm still not getting it. So you're saying smaller units say 5-wide? That just makes things worse doesn't it? You'll be less able to strip ranks off the attacker and they'll get more attacks back since they're wider than you.

Regarding that "review", this is pretty much a homer reviewing his own book.  And he is way off on several things, mostly in his analysis of core.  Stack any ranked HE core against equal value of any VC, TK, Empire, or even Beastmen ranked core units and watch what happens.  Even the somewhat overcosted Sea Guard kill just about every single ranked core unit from 8th out there, except _maybe_ Savage Orc Bigguns or Plague Bearers.  They even have a shot at grinding out basic Chaos Warriors, in equal point situations (the spearmen definitely do).
I am skeptical.

Let's say a horde of 50 spearelves. 10 wide, 5 ranks deep. 50 attacks! But also 450 points. Vs various enemies (all assumed horded):

Vs 450 points of ghouls (45 ghouls). Elves do 15 wounds. Ghouls do 9. Elves kick ass.

Vs 450 points of Savage Orc Bigguns (41 big 'uns). Elves do 10. Orcs do 21 (with choppas). Orcs kick ass.

Vs 450 points of Ogres (14 ogres). Elves do 8 wounds. Ogres do 12 (inc stomps but not impacts). Ogres win.

Vs. 450 points of Empire halberdiers (75 halberdiers). Elves do 19, empire do 10. Elves win, but empire steadfast and will win in the long run if they don't break.

Vs. 450 points of Chaos Warriors (26, halberds, no mark). Elves do 4. Warriors do 18. Warriors kick ass (this gets worse with mark of khorne or sword and board tzeentch).

I'm not seeing the elf domination of the Core section. They beat out empire but yeah newsflash empire core is overcosted. Throw priests and stuff in there and Empire looks better but even without them halberdiers will eventually outgrind the elves. That leaves only the two undead as having worse core than spearelves.

Quote
And the spearmen are only one facet of their core options, now that Silver Helms have returned and Reavers are in the mix.
Right. I think we'll see lots of all-mounted HE armies very soon.

Well, there's an email address to send questions to. We can make it a frequently asked question!

Yeah, that seems to be the best interpretation based on RAW.

I suspect this is not what was intended but unless we get a better FAQ that answers the questions we really want to know, that's the best we can do I suppose.

It's a shame, if Golgfag actually just had the stubborn/vanguard rules himself he might actually be worth taking.

Which raises the next question: does he gain the special rules of any maneater unit that he joins?

He certainly can.

Whether he keeps his Been There, Done That rules if he does so is another question.

Except, you miss out on the L4 miscasting and killing, at most, 2 models aspect of the banner.  Also, DPs lack built in stubborn.  If your a normal player and actually trying to fight, yeah slap it on DPs and few people will complain.  The issue is that in my experience, most HE players would much rather be playing 40k and their army construction tends to reflect this philosophy.

Well, a couple of combat characters one with the crown of command and a wizard in the second rank on a horse and you have yourself a very nasty mobile deathstar for not that massive an amount of points. The ability to take a wizard along for the ride without risk of blowing half the unit up is an appealing one, even more than protecting infantry bunkers.

17
Yes, but the requirement is that you can see the target. There's some contention over whether a model partially obscured from sight in the second rank can count as in cover or not too.

I don't know, I'd put it on a sizable dragon prince unit myself. With fight in three ranks that's a pretty hardcore unit and more likely to be hit by magical attacks than a white lion horde. There are a few spells that can really threaten white lions as a whole (flame cage, curse of the bad moon, etc) they can handle remains in play or hex spells pretty easily. Dragon Princes on the other hand are more likely to be blasted by direct damage spells and might get more out of the banner.

19
The problem I've found with sniper maneaters is that it rarely works in my experience. The enemy will move his characters out of range or try and use cover (even a -1 pretty much neuters snipers). While ironblasters can put the enemy off from hiding outside of units, you'll often find easy-to-kill wizards hide out in bunker units where you can't get them and combat characters often have enough armour/ward to shrug off a couple of S4AP wounds.

What it does do is scare the snot out of the enemy and can prompt them to do silly things with their characters like sticking them way out of position. The response is far outside of the actual threat in some cases.

So sniper maneaters: they're a psychological weapon. You're probably not going to get many wounds on enemy characters out of them, but they can have a big effect on the game nonetheless.

I was not aware that dragon hide breath was magical

Me neither...
The FAQ has a list of magical attacks under "what are magical attacks?" question and one of them is any attack made from a magic item. The dragonhide breath attack comes from the item so it is magical.

Yes I do see my flaw but since I played ogres I never really saw then necessary :p

Well I am a big fan of the sword of striking on my tyrant. +1 to hit for only 15 points? Bargain. For the slaughtermaster, sword of anti-heroes or fencers blades are good. Failing that, those 5 point weapons are good for getting magical attacks.

I wouldn't go to battle without at least one character with a magic weapon to counter ethereals. I usually have at least two magic weapons in my army.

If you're saying you have a problem with ethereals but you run your characters without magic weapons a solution does kind of present itself...  :P

Other than that, firebellies, yhetees and dragonhide breath.

I think scrap launchers are a must for a shooty army as are sniper maneaters at higher points.

Fire belly on a magic carpet might be a good option for this list.

Slaughtermaster with heavens is likewise a nice choice.

Been working on a samuari head for my samurai maneaters:

Quite happy with it visually but sadly I don't think it's going to work, I've got the scale out a little bit (again) so it's a bit too big, even for my massive samurai's body. I'll stick it on a body and see if it looks okay but I think it's just going in the bits box.
