Thinling Realms / Re: New WOC in February
« on: Feb 25, 2013, 06:50:09 PM »
To be clear, it's not "slots" in the old sense - there is no number of maximum rare choices overall, per se; but the restriction is on duplicate units. You cannot have more that 2 duplicate rare choices, or 3 duplicate special choices under 3k points (double those over 3k). So while there is no set number imposed on "rare choices", this effectively imposes a limit, as you can only ever have a limited number of each rare choice.

You can therefore only have 2 spawn under 3k with the new book.

Thinling Realms / Re: Daemons of Chaos leaked pictures.
« on: Feb 23, 2013, 10:22:00 AM »
I'm often inspired by new models (2000 points of Deathwing sitting on my painting station) but this seems like an unusually unappealing release to me; I do really like the plague drones, though not particularly liking the current plague bearers, that's not enough to make me start an army . . . need to find a counts-as option I like - mournfangs, maybe? ;p

However, even if the "Great motorcycle of Khorne"had a large red I WIN button on it, I wouldn't buy it - intricately crafted, sure, but looks bizarre. The Dr. Zeuss gun (as I've heard it called elsewhere) option is worse, and the "flaming" chariot? Shame, I quite liked the new flamers when they came out.

Maybe it's because daemons don't appeal to me much; but then I run WoC, and not much from the new releases there has grabbed me; some conversion possibilities with the dragon ogres perhaps. Seems to me the fantasy releases generally are being dominated by big, showy centrepieces (and don't get me wrong, I love my thundertusks/stonehorns), but the latest ones have just not been that attractive to me.

Anyway, here's hoping for plastic poseable wardancers next time around, but I expect we'll get the Mighty Walking Oak of Doom. Maybe it won't be so bad; maybe it'll have elves in it.

I'm sorry, but I fail to see how a cheap-as-hell, leadership 10 general who imparts hatred and MR3 is a bad thing in a monstrous horde army.

Leadership 10 is fantastic on a general, I don't disagree, and much needed in monstrous horde armies . . . but Scyla just doesn't have the survivability for a model that important, so he isn't going to be around long enough to impart that great leadership, and of course when he dies your army is in that bit worse trouble. I think it's just a gift to your opponent, to be honest; but by all means try it, I'd love to hear success stories :)

Personally I think his rules are very intentional.  Suddenly he's no longer a worthless special character, and he helps make monstrous armies more viable since Throgg lost his BSB ability (which also happen to be more expensive armies to build, hence why I think this is deliberate).  As for sniping him, Dragon Ogres are also Monstrous Beasts, and buying enough of them for a LoS roll isn't beyond reason.

But as things stand, he would have to be your general (unless Archaon/Sigvald, which you would be unlikely to use in a monstrous horde), which is the bit which I think is particularly unintentional, and if it stays, is going to see him not used.

Putting him with Dragon Ogres is an interesting option, but he won't fit the footprint, so you couldn't run them very wide; and to run enough for a reliable LOS, you're going to have a lot of points invested in rear ranks, and even second rank attacks will be largely wasted. MB aren't MI after all.

Yes, I don't think any of it is intentional. He needs something similar to the "Loner" rule as per our hunters, and I imagine that will be errata'd quickly.

As for Leadership issues, I've just noticed something - if the Chaos Player runs Trolls or Ogres, Scyla Anfingrimm can be deployed with them* (can't find a rule stating otherwise). Now that he's M6, his ld 10 would really help as a general, he relatively combat efficient, doesn't have Eye of the Gods so doesn't have to issue challenges, and is absurdly cheap for what he brings. Only downside is he's easily killed with shooting, but he's fairly fast, and if you lose him his cheapness makes it easier to bear.

This is an interesting idea - ordinary shooting is not much of a threat to be honest, the problem is that he can't get Look out sir! rolls for cannon shots, etc.
However, in thinking about your idea, something odd occurs to me; just as you can't find a rule stating that he can't lead units, I can't find a rule stating that he can't be general - in which case any WoC army that takes Scyla without taking either Archaon or Sigvald would have to have Scyla as general?! Less attractive suddenly...

Also, unless I read it wrong, although Daemon Princes look fun with more options, it appears that because they are now "Daemons of XXX" they no longer have "Mark of XXX" . . . which means my Tzeentch DP only has a 5++ save? (He can reroll "1"s, but that doesn't help so much with 5++). Compared to the scary survivability of a Tzeentch lord (potential 3++ rerolling 1s) this doesn't look so attractive, even if he is an offensive (in both senses) flying combat beast. Are all DPs now likely to be Nurgle Daemons with Glittering Scales and flying into combat to avoid cannon-shot?

Chaos Armour and an enchanted shield are an option for DPs now, of course, although that won't help much with the cannon-shot; and that's a lot of work for WYSIWYG on my current DP!

Really nice cohesive looking army; the bases tie it together well, and the theme is crisp and consistent without being overdone.

Like the polar bear mournfangs too; would be nice to see some closer pics of the finished centre-pieces (stonehorn, tyrant, ironblasters, butchers, and so on!).

Gnoblogs / Re: Black orc ogre proxy force 'the Bloodguzzlers'
« on: Jan 23, 2013, 10:48:48 PM »
Run sabretusks on their own - there's several reasons why, but the main one is that in pairs, if one gets killed, the other has a good chance to run away, which is not good. Singly, if they die, they die - just keep them 6"+ away from your ogre units! If you got even one redirect (or even a speedbump) it has paid for itself (can't get much cheaper units, after all); but the uses of sabretusks are legion - put them down first as deployment drops, save placement of important units til later, etc. There are some good posts about it around here somewhere, by tyrants with more wisdon than I.

Some great poses on the new orc bulls, and I like the idea of a BSB carrying the Mawstone. If you can pose it slightly more over the shoulders, so the top hand is in contact, it will look more supported - as it is, he's going to lose it any second!

Good stuff - the flash gives you the effect you want on the armour! Use that piccy :)
They look great ranked up though.
Nice work on the beastie too.

As for the list, I wouldn't run units of 4 bulls for redirecting. If you have worked out model count already, group those in 2 units of 6; if you have some sabretusks (or whatever ;p ), use a couple of those for light work instead. With Maw and Beasts, you'll likely have a few buffs to spread around, so Bulls can be handy in a pinch. You could run your 2nd butcher in one unit; a beasts butcher can be a . . . well, beast if you roll Horros.

Armies of the Kingdoms / Re: 500 Points, Friendly List
« on: Jan 19, 2013, 03:53:09 PM »
If you don't want to proxy a firebelly, a solid 500 close to your original list would be:

level 1 Butcher
4 Ironguts, std (std of discipline), bellower
4 Leadbelchers
1 sabretusk

A level 1 caster is fine for the points, and the standard means the IGs have a bit more staying power just in case. Leadbelchers are fun, and don't forget they can be handy in melee too if it comes to it.
When rolling for Gut Magic, I'd just take the signature spell at this points level. Coupled with the standard, this should ensure your IGs should stay around even if everything in your opponents army charges them.

You could also swap a single LB out for another IG; this would give you a strong unit with a 3x2 footprint with the Butcher, and 3 leadies as support, with a 'tusk to help divert.

Great project, well executed.
I like the thundertusk in particular - the paint scheme for the beast is very effective, and the war drum is really nicely done.
The tarnishing on the armour looks good too, but the black looks a little flat (n the pictures at least); I would try highlighting before you weather them.

Looking forward to seeing more; could we see a pic of ranked up "ironguts"?

Gnoblogs / Re: The Oathkeepers Tribe (reinforcements)
« on: Jan 07, 2013, 12:24:56 AM »
It can't really have been a year since I last posted any work on my ogres, can it? The necron army is a reality nowadays, but sadly not a painted one yet. And now the new DA models look much better than I had expected ...

Well, back to ogres, who have seen some action again recently; I still haven't got that Heavens butcher model figured out, mostly because the couple of times I've proxxied it hasn't worked for me; I'm a big fan of beast lore, still :)

However, I have built half a Firebelly; so should have that finished in another year or so

In the meantime, I have started to tire a little of my usual lists, and to play around with the less used options from the book. To that end, I have a hankering to make my hunter work, and although I have remodelled my existing hunter with a blood vulture, mostly because I really like the model and had one spare, I think a hunter really has to have a harpoon launcher, so I decided to model a new one. Now, 2 things -

1) it has always bothered me that a hunter has a 50m base for no reason (other than that it ranks up with sabretusks); indeed my old hunter is on a 40m base. This time, I wanted to do a 50m base, but with a justifiable (but not game-impacting) reason.

2) the description of the harpoon launcher (and indeed harpoons in general) involve being able to retract it once embedded in the quarry, and "fish" the prey home. I wanted to incorporate this on the already large crossbow from the TT set.

The result of both of these thoughts is thus:

I was pleased with the harpoon. Could the mount be a baby thundertusk?

I know that a harpoon hunter is a poor-gnoblar's-ironblaster, but I am determined to find an advantage. I will play around with load-outs of magic items, and let you know if I find anything at all useful.

I have 2 different kinds; first, Orcish MEs:

And second, "Trollslayers" - somewhere between dwarf and chaos MEs:

Am in the middle of painting a mass of 40k orks, but as I start to see it come to fruition, thoughts turn to fantasy again ^^. It's been a long time since I updated the blog, which I will change to a general non-ogres one, and save my ogre gnoblog for anything Oathkeepers related.
I did finish painting the Chaos knights, and was much happier with them in the long run. Painted up some dogs as well, so I thought I'd start by posting pics of that army as it stands.

Although these can be used simply as two small units of knights, the idea was to have a mini-deathstar unit, with 7 knights, a lord, a BSB, and a mounted wizard (the guy with the fire in the first picture. Here are some more shots of the chaos lord.

And a couple of pictures of the warhounds:

Ok, so I have the following projects on the go:

1) 40k Apoc-level Orks. Approx 2k painted, out of about 4.5k. Pics up on 40k online atm, on the Orks board, if anyone is interested. Working steadily on this one.
2) Plague rats - the army that started this thread. I still have a bunch of the IoB skaven, a plague catapult,  and some converted but unpainted stuff to make this army legal again.
3) getting on for 2k new necrons, none of it painted.
4) The idea of a purist Throgg army, with plenty of conversions, and ONLY trolls... Some modelling work has been done.
5) An entirely base coated but unpainted Orc army - approx 3k
6) Some marauder horsemen to expand the army pictured in this post and provide core choices - and more inspiration needed!

Nothing else can be considered a "live" project at present, having been entirely confined to boxes :)

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Ask Aunty Doreen
« on: Dec 14, 2011, 05:11:57 PM »
Dear Auntie Doreen,

after years of calling me soft for wearing a gut plate, my slaughtermaster has suddenly taken to wearing a suit of glowing full-plate and laughing maniacally into his new ironfist. Is this a mid-life crisis? It's affecting the rest of my tribe - our hunter has suddenly turned up with a load of creatures that I'm sure I've never seen before, our maneaters are hiding in long grass and shooting, and our tyrant hasn't been seen in months.

An Ogre who inexplicably feels a longing for the company of cattle as a racial memory.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Finished 1st Batallion - Step 2?
« on: Dec 12, 2011, 03:28:43 PM »
Since the OP wanted a priority list, "buy both" or "buy lots" I'm guessing isn't going to be helpful  :P

I agree that Mournfangs are an above average unit, and I personally like the models too; but they need to be in support of combat blocks, or they will get chewed. As 6 Ogres or 6 Ironguts are not in themselves sufficient (particularly without characters) except at very low point games, I recommend increasing bodies first so that you have a solid core, then pick up the toys. 4 Mournfang will be devastating as a compliment to an army - they're not an army in themselves, however.

19
That's how I did mine - front row all have black orc heads:

More pics in my gnoblog if you're interested.

The Feeding Grounds / Re: Finished 1st Batallion - Step 2?
« on: Dec 12, 2011, 08:25:13 AM »
How did you build your first battalion? If by "straight out of the box" you meant 6 ogres, 6 ironguts, and 4 leadbelchers, then I'd buy another battalion next, as each of those units will perform measurably better with even just 2-3 more in each unit. It also gives you plenty of scope for conversion of all your characters, if you haven't yet bought any; and you could squeeze a unit of maneaters out of the box too if you're creative.

I'd like 8 ogres, 8 ironguts, 6 leadbelchers, 6 maneaters, leaving you 4 models for a BSB, 2 slaughtermaster/butchers, and a spare to up one of your blocks to 9 (or a tyrant, if you're so inclined!).

After that, add your mournfangs and an Ironblaster, and you have a versatile force which really only needs a couple of sabretusks, and perhaps a firebelly!

Armies of the Kingdoms / Re: Best 2k list with what I have
« on: Dec 05, 2011, 08:26:37 AM »

Doesn't look like a bad list - I don't think I'd take the second unit of bulls with extra HW, and I might bulk out the other unit a bit; what are you carrying in terms of magic items, and who are you running your characters with?

« on: Dec 03, 2011, 05:03:40 PM »
We talked over the new ogre book and 8th in general for 29mins or so.

You have an incredibly acute sense of time ;p

Thanks for the info - I don't hate the ruling on IFs, tbh; I haven't been playing with magic-armoured butchers, and I think it would go against the fluff; they don't even wear gut plates, after all.

Armies of the Kingdoms / Re: 800pt List, Stuck on Core Choice!
« on: Nov 30, 2011, 08:41:53 PM »
I'd go with the 'guts - that way your main unit is ld 8 with one reroll. I'd then put the +1 ld standard on the maneaters, and give them stubborn and swiftstride. Two reasonable size units at 800pts, which are very likely to stick around to the last wound.

24
Option 2 is probably the most competitive choice; I would avoid units of less than 6 leadbelchers myself, except in very small games - they rely on volume of fire to be useful.
Personally, I might go for option 4, however - the 2nd Ironblaster is nasty, (although you might just have a curse from the sky giants on you if one hasn't killed anything in 7 games!) , but 6 maneaters, loadout as you describe, is bucketloads of fun. One of my favourite units, still.
