Firstly - rhinox riders are amazing...

Secondly, I never use mournfang cavalry. I take two wonderfully vicious units of leadies as suggest by Eg earlier. It certainly hasn't seemed lacking to me so far...but depends what kind of games you play I suppose! :)

Off Topic / Ni No Kuni (the game)
« on: May 18, 2013, 03:05:02 PM »
I have recently picked this up and can't recommend this enough. IGN describes it like this:

"Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is an epic tale of a young boy, Oliver, who embarks on a journey to become a master magician and bring back his dead mother from the parallel world of Ni no Kuni. Along the way he encounters some extraordinary characters, many of whom become helpful allies. They guide Oliver as he explores the vast world and learns the magical skills that will make him strong enough to face his most deadly foes, and ultimately survive an encounter with the White Witch herself.

The world of Ni no Kuni actually runs parallel to the real world. Players will be able to travel between the two. Characters who appear in one world appear in the other as well, but with different roles in this unique RPG experience."

I am approximately 11 hours into the game now and am completely enamoured with it. It plays almost exactly like an updated Final Fantasy 9 (remember that?) crossed with Pokemon (only in battle). Speaking of which, it is exactly like FF9 EXCEPT for the option to not fit as yourself in battle. You can instead summon a familiar from your heart (beautiful story) and they can fight and take damage on your behalf. If they die, you die, pretty straightforward. It's real selling point is the plot. It really is incredibly unique and well worth playing through. I am nowhere near halfway so I'm assuming it has a play time of old 40+ hours at least.

Any of you thinking about playing it/have played it?

If I'm totally honest my hobby enthusiasm has wavered ever so slightly since finishing that cloak, but also due to the arrival of a game called Ni No Kuni on the ps3. I can't recommend it highly enough. However, after miraculously failing my monthly painting challenge last month I am determined to complete thins one!

On another note I have lined up my first Warhammer game in a while which will be in a month or so and intend to play my warriors. It's time to see what they can do! I also intend to finish my Tzeentch unit and perhaps have a ready converted unit of marauders...(my plan for which will follow soon...)

Anyway, onwards!!!!

I like the onesie...in fact it's growing on me more and more. Sort of like each ogre has had all his clothes ,add from the same scarce piece of cloth by a gnoblar driven insane by needle and thread...

Great unit there. Army looks great too :) should consider posting in the monthly painting challenge as you seem to get things done quite quickly!

It saddens me that your CD's have taken a back seat.... But I do love a bit of goblin mischief!! I'm not too familiar with the army book but the list looks fairly hilarious and probably slightly more competitive than first glance too..

Hope all is going well :)

The Butcher's Cauldron / Re: Putting the STONE in STONEHORN....??
« on: May 18, 2013, 02:49:07 PM »
Both models shown are great examples.

A stipple effect is tough...it will almost never look natural to the scale required. If you've already painted it Fenrisian Grey, I'd go with a light wash or two even of nuln oil. Really darken it and bring out the lighter areas. Then proceed to highlight again with Fenrisian grey on those bits (difference should be small but noticeable) and then pick out the very edges with a lighter grey.

That's what I'd do! :)

Perhaps worth it on this occasion....only because it's almost more of a gnoblog anyway which are exempt from threadomancy. But either way - this escaped me the first time round and I think it's fantastic! Great concept. Wonder how it got on at games day...

Love it - the original model doesn't have that skull necklace does it? My memory fails me...but it looks great anyway :)

How did I miss this!? :)

Saw the post but not the update with pic, and it looks great. Such a great, imposing sculpt and you've done a cracking job on the build with slight modifications!

Look forward to seeing it ready for waaaar!

Indeed, looks very blood bowl (a good thing IMO). Sculpting skill is very high even if you had been sculpting for years.

Personally I can never get past the fact that the helmet makes it look like a giant Orc. However, that's purely my poor imagination!

I always love seeing 4 mournfangs. Always ;)

They look even better completed (not so shocking really haha),

It's a really interesting concept and I'm intrigued to see how it looks on a grander scale! :)

Ironblaster looks great. Very tidy painting, well executed.

Also - the idea of an ogre in a sabretusk onesie offends me so much I want to make my own! :)

Painting room looks amazing. Congratulations on the move!

I love reading through the back pages of this blog. Always inspiring!
I've no idea how you managed to make those necrons look so dynamic but huge, huge respect from me for that as i think they look amazing.

Referring to the light colour on the bloodletters (as no-one replied), it's different. I'm certainly used to the standard red, so it takes a while to get round the idea, but I like it... sort of like albino 'letters. Also the execution is excellent!

May your hobby room bring you much more success! :)

Whilst I am 80% sure that i have no idea what a quad gun is, I think yours looks awesome! Also, that obliterator looks great too. I can't wait til you get some snaps of this stuff with a bit of paint on them! :)

The Butcher's Cauldron / Monthly Painting Challenge - May 2013
« on: May 04, 2013, 09:44:46 PM »
In the absence of Randroid could a moderator make this thread a sticky please? Thanks.
Time for the May Painting Challenge! You only have until the 10th to make your pledges and get painting!

It's the
:maw: May Painting Challenge! :maw:

Just joining in? The idea is, you make a promise to paint and/or build/convert a given number of models at the beginning of the month, and report back with your progress, if and when you manage to complete it. From here on out we will refer to this as your "Pledge"!

The Rules:
  • All Pledges will be frozen after the 10th day of the month. There is no changing of *any* pledge after day 10. Pledges are still accepted after the 10th of the month, but they can not be changed once they are made.
  • If you finish your pledge, and you would like to really impress the rest of the Stronghold, you can then go on to add a Bonus pledge. Any additions to your pledge made before the 10th go onto your initial pledge and will not count as a Bonus pledge.
  • We need to know The number of Models when you post your pledge. 3, 8, 10, or even 100. Saying "A unit" is not acceptable.
  • Extra incentive: I will be awarding :gnoblar: to those who complete their pledge. I'll also be awarding an extra :gnoblar: to the one pledgee who posts the best photos of their pledge throughout the month!

*Please* post the progression of your work (pictures if at all possible). One of the best things about this thread is watching everyone's work come together. It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however. Feel free to make separate posts, and then link into this thread so that others can comment directly in your own thread in the Butchers Cauldron or your Gnoblog.

FAQ
Q: So I can Only do Ogre Kingdoms or GW Minis, for my pledge?
A: No. There isn't anything stopping you from building and/or painting anything you like, however this is the Ogre Stronghold, and we are naturally more excited to see Ogre models. If you're working on one of your other Armies or projects, and/or any other Models, please feel free to make a Pledge.

Q: I need to change my Pledge!
A: well.. You have until the 10th day of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There may be small prizes awarded for photographic evidence, but you really only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal... We'll do one of these close to the beginning of every month...

Q: What if I finish my pledge but decide to do more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's not as big of an accomplishment  to make a pledge with 75% of the project painted at the start of the month...  That's not to say that sometimes the last 25% of the project your working on is not more than worth being a pledge of its own..

Q. I have not completed my Pledge for the past few months, should I still enter?
A. You bet! The idea behind a painting challenge is to develop some discipline as to what you're going to build or paint. Part of the challenge is to learn what you can complete within a given month, and what you can't. If you find you're not able to complete your pledge for the month, then reduce the size of it.

Let's get to it!
